Want to watch Santa’s reindeer? You can tune into the live feed at  http://reindeercam.com/  It’s the perfect activity to get your children excited about Christmas.  Let them watch while you’re decorating the tree?  Each evening at 5:00 pm EST the reindeer are fed.  The children can watch the reindeer resting and gathering their strength for the big trip on December 25.

Also, you can also add your child’s name to the Nice List for a fee on the site or you can write Santa a letter per the instructions on the site.  Once the letter is received, your child’s name will be added to the Nice List.

Do you know the history of Santa’s reindeer, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen. The 1823 poem by Clement C. Moore “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (also known as “The Night Before Christmas” or “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”) is credited for the eight flying reindeer and their names per Wikipedia. This portion of the poem introduces the reindeer:

“When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny rein-deer,
with a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Christmas Breakfast Ideas for Kids

Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on Christmas breakfast ideas for kids.  Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and Feliz Navidad. The kids are out of school for the next week and they’re excited about Santa.  You on the other hand, must come up with meal ideas and other ways to keep them occupied.  So, I’ve put together a round up for Christmas breakfast ideas for kids.

First Lady Cookie Recipes

Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on First Lady cookie recipes.  Every 4 four years we can look forward to a Presidential election and a cookie bake off with the First Lady and the hopeful First Lady.  These recipes are are from Michelle Obama and Ann Romney’s bake off.  Michelle Obama shared her Mama Kaye’s White and Dark Chocolate Chip recipe and Ann Romney shared her M and M Cookies recipe.

The holidays are approaching, and I thought I would share the cookie recipes since they didn’t get much attention in the midst of the battle for the highest position in the land.  As wives and mothers, we often take a back seat.  So, I’m sure both Michelle and Ann would appreciate you whipping up a batch of their delicious cookies.  Furthermore, make a batch for snacks or put them in a Christmas gift baskets.

Family Circle Magazine announced the winner of the bake off in their October 2012 issue.  The winner, Michelle Obama. I have not made either of the recipes, but intend to whip up a batch of each for Christmas gifts this season.

 

First Lady Cookie Recipes:

 

Ingredients:

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 stick Crisco butter-flavored solid vegetable shortening
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup each white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips and mint chocolate chips (or Andes mint pieces)
2 cups chopped walnuts

 

Preparation:

1. Heat oven to 375°.
2. Whisk together flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream butter, vegetable shortening, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract.
3. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
4. On low speed, beat in flour mixture. By hand, stir in white and milk chocolate chips, mint chips and walnuts.
5. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto un-greased baking sheets.
6. Bake at 375° for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.  Makes 5 dozen.

 

First Lady Cookie Recipe

 

 

Ingredients:
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1 1/2 cups crunchy peanut butter
1 tablespoon light corn syrup (such as Karo)
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 1/2 cups rolled oats
2 teaspoons baking soda
6 ounces chocolate chips
2/3 cups M&M’s candies

Preparation:

1. Heat oven to 325 degrees F. In a large bowl, cream sugars, butter, peanut butter and corn syrup on high speed until well combined. Beat in eggs 1 at a time. Beat in vanilla extract.
2. In a separate bowl, mix together oats and baking soda. Stir into peanut butter mixture until combined. Mix in chocolate chips and M&M’s.
3. Using a standard-size ice cream scoop, drop dough onto baking sheets (about 9 per sheet). Bake at 325 degrees F for 18 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool 2 minutes, then transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.  Makes 3 dozen.

Children’s Carnival Birthday Party Ideas

We celebrated Xavier and Zarriah’s birthdays a few weeks ago.  We decided to combine their parties this year since we were having guests from out of town.  Zarriah’s Christening was the following day, so we decided to have a week-end of festivities.  I had a blast planning it, and it was the party of the year.  At least for a kid’s birthday party.

We decided to go with a carnival theme party.  So, if you’re looking for carnival birthday party ideas you’ve come to the right place.  Before we decided to combine the parties, we had planned a Ladybug party for Zarriah.  My daughter wanted me to incorporate the ladybugs into the carnival theme, which presented a challenge.  If you know me, you know that I’m always up for a challenge.  We decided to include a ladybug cake in addition to the bright colored cupcakes.  We decided to use carnival themed toppers on the cupcakes.  Didn’t both turn out adorable.

 

 

Next, we rented a huge tent from a catering company.  We used bright and bold colored tablecloths on the tables.  The lot included red, blue, yellow, green and pink.  In addition, we used 3 banquet tables to feature the cakes and finger foods.  Our menu included chicken salad sandwiches, wings, ladybug crackers, butterflies orange slices, which I forgot to get a picture of, and the kids loved them.  The butterflies were orange slices cut in half, turned in the opposite direction and a slice of strawberry set in the center.  Additionally, we served potato salad, veggies and dip, chips and hot dogs.

 

 

Here’s a picture, although not very good,  of the ladybug crackers we served.  The base is a Ritz cracker topped with chicken salad, a cherry tomato sliced for the wings, and a black olive held on with a plain toothpick.  Both the adults and kids loved them.  Click here for the creamy chicken salad recipe.  We

 

 

 

You can’t have a carnival without a clown.  So, we hired two clown to entertain the kids for an hour.  They were great.  This is Bubbles B, she made a balloon hat for granddaddy and his birthday girl.  In the picture above that, Zarriah is studying Bubbles B.  This was her first experience around a clown.  We were wondering if she was going to cry in the picture above, but after studying her for a few minutes they became good friends.

 

 

We set up a balloon dart board, and secured it to one of the storage building.  It was the perfect height for all the kids to participate.  That’s my niece, she was the dart board champion.

 

 

The kids couldn’t leave the carnival with out a bag of popcorn or a sno-cone.  As a result, we rented a popcorn machine and a sno-cone machine.  They were both hits as you can see.  We were able to get a good deal along with the bounce house.  We gave tickets to all of the kids when they arrived, and we had an adult stationed at each event.  Each event or item required 3 tickets.

 

 

The kids participated in a sack race.  Needless to say, they had a ball.  We purchased the sacks from Party City.  I use them for my July 4th cookouts too.

 

 

Somehow, we had to include a ladybug activity into the festivities.  This is the buggy bus.  We taped ladybug wings to the back of the bus.  And we placed eyelashes over the lights to get our ladybug some character.  The kids loved it.  I had to station an adult at the buggy bus, because the kids were fighting over her.  I was so happy to incorporate the ladybug into the carnival theme.

Get creative, and you will come up with plenty of carnival birthday party ideas too.  We had a Duck Pond game as well, however, the kids had other plans for it.  They decided to stand in it and cool off.  FIY – if you are planning to use this game at a party, make sure you use weighted ducks so they can float.  Additionally, we also had a Veggie Can Toss.  Unfortunately, it rained and we were unable to play that game.  The kids headed to the Bounce House and we were unable to retrieve them after that.  We had to literally start deflating the tent before we could get them out.

11 Christening Day Tips for a Memorial Event

First, a child is the most precious of all earthly gifts from God. In acceptance of our gift, we promise our Lord and Savior that we will raise our child in the Christian faith. Depending on your denomination, your may have a Christening, Dedication or Baptize an older child. No matter which, the ceremony day is a day of celebration. As with any celebration, moms want to do it right. You want to make the day special and the celebration memorable. Planning in advance is crucial. There are so many things to do and so many people to honor in our celebration.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on Christening Day Tips.

So, where do we start?  Here are a few Christening Day Tips to make Christening Day go smoothly:

  • Guest List – I always start with a list of guests.  Everything you purchase for your celebration depends on guest list. Furthermore, when putting together your guest list, remember the place of honor each guest has. For example, grandparents, Godparents and relatives.
  • Invitations and Thank You Cards  – The invitations should include what the celebration is, who the celebration is for, the time and Church location for the ceremony. The time and location of the celebration and the RSVP information.   It’s important to remember to leave at least an hour between the church ceremony and the start of the celebration.  This will give you a little preparation time to prepare.  You will also want to change clothes and freshen up.
  • Food Preparation – You will need to know approximately how many guests you will be feeding, so you ca ensure that you have enough food.  Just as important, you don’t want to over spend and waste food.  However, after a long week-end, left overs will be welcome.
  • Keepsake Gifts – The place of  honor the guests hold will determine the type of keepsake gifts to purchase.  When you plan a child’s birthday party, all the children receive the same goody bags.  But when you plan a Christening celebration this is not necessarily true. You will want to purchase different keepsake gifts for the people of honor in the ceremony.
  • Godparents –  A Godparent loves your child and promises to assist you in the rearing of your child in Christian faith. Furthermore, they usually are selected to rear your child in your absence. This is a great gift to you and your child and a respectable undertaking. Honor them with a special gift.
  • Grandparents – Keepsakes for grandparents are optional in my opinion.  However, grandparents are the driving force behind your Christian rearing and your child’s. They love you and your child and provide a lifetime of experience.  Their wisdom will be of great assistance to both you and your child throughout the years to come.
  • Decorations  – For decorations, a simple white and silver or  white and gold color theme is usually selected. White symbolizes your child’s purity. Silver symbolizes the connection between man and God. Gold symbolizes rejoicing in our blessings. A Christian symbol should be  selected as well. A cross is the most common, but a dove of peace or angel theme  is perfectly acceptable. Paper goods, room decorations and your keepsake gifts  should be unified in color and Christian symbol.
  • Ceremonial gown or suit – Whatever you select, it will become a keepsake. For the ceremony, depending on the child’s age, a gown and booties or shoes are a must. Also, don‘t forget a change of clothes for your child in case of a mishap.
  • Entertainment  – Some people wonder if entertainment is appropriate. I say yes.  Christian music or easy listening would be good. Bible story coloring books, games and puzzles will keep small children entertained.
  • Photographs –  Your going to be busy! You have guest to talk to  and a child to care for. Ask a family member or friend who is good to take  pictures and video if possible. If you like candid photos, supply some disposable cameras your guests can use.
  • Accommodations for your out of  town guests –  You may be able to house close family member or friends. If you can’t or there are just too many guests, supply a list of local hotels in your  invitation. If the out of town guest is a Godparent, you should offer to pay for their accommodations.  After all, they are an honored part of your ceremony and celebration.

Healthy Eating Tips for Children

I heard an interesting question on one of the news channels, and I’ve really been pondering the answer.  Should social workers take obese children from the home?  I’ve taken time to really think about the question.  Is the obesity due to a medical problem?   If it is a medical problem or unhealthy foods?  It’s a parent’s responsibility to teach good eating habits.  So, today I’m sharing parenting tips on healthy eating tips for children.

So, the American Medical Association believes instilling healthy eating habits is the ethical thing to do.  Most importantly, they believe the child should be removed from the home and taught the proper eating habits.  The importance of getting physical activity is included as well.  Once this is accomplished, the parents and child can be reunited.  Do you agree?  Teaching healthy eating as a family would also be beneficial?

Because children spend so much time on the computer or playing computer games these day, they rarely get physical activity.  The lack of physical activity along with unhealthy meals has lead to severe obesity in our country.  There are approximately 2 million obese children in the United States.  This is a serious problem wouldn’t you say?  I do see a few kids in my neighborhood out riding a bike or walking.  And it’s so pleasing.

Unfortunately, doctors have told parents that they are literally killing their obese children.  It’s such a sad and break breaking situation to see.  Parents are literally loving their children to death.

Also, many parents complain that they can’t afford the healthier foods.  It’s cheaper to buy soda and other junk than all natural juice,  veggies and better cuts of meat.  I decided to plant a garden to cut down on my food bill.  Canning and freezing freeze fresh veggies and tomatoes for sauces, salsa, soups and chili will produce healthy meals.  For example, soups and chili are nutritious.  Homemade salsa with chips make a great snack.  Use homemade sauce for pizza or dipping sauce for baked mozzarella sticks.  Plant corn for popcorn and season with your own spices.  Gardening can be a great learning experience for kids.

Unfortunately, not everyone has room for a garden,  But there are alternatives like container gardening that can be done on a patio or balcony.  The prices in the grocery store are ridiculous and the vegetables taste like cardboard.  Furthermore, fruits like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries can also be grown in containers.  I don’t blame the kids for not wanting to eat produce from the grocery stores.  I can barely get them down, and one of the reasons I started gardening.  There’s a million recipes for chicken, which is the one meat that is not that expensive and considered healthy.

I’m not sure about removing the child from the home, but I am sure that we have a child obesity problem in this country and it is leading to high blood pressure, diabetics, and other health problems.  Do you promote healthy eating and physical activity in your home?

Teen Suicide Is Real in America

Sadly, this is probably one of the saddest post that I’ve ever written.  My neighbor’s 13 year old daughter committed suicide.  They found her around 3:00 am.  One of my neighbors came to visit so she could let me know of the tragedy.  We discussed how we come together as a community to help this family.  That’s the type of neighborhood that I live in.  We look out for each other regularly, and help each other out in time of need.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on teen suicide in our society.

Like many, my neighbors stated that they hadn’t seen the suicide coming.   Their child was being bullied, but they didn’t see it as a big deal.  In their mind, she wasn’t being bullied anymore than anyone else.  My immediate thought was, here’s another child being bullied and nobody does anything about it.  Sadly, this child as ended her life.  She was a beautiful little girl with so much to live for.  However, in her mind she had nothing to live for.  Her pain was far greater than future.

After my neighbor left, I wondered how her parents could possibly find the strength to deal with this tragedy.  Furthermore, I wondered how they could not take bullying seriously.  How could they just chalk it up as her not being bullied anymore than anyone else.  Bullying is a serious problem.  I thought about the guilt that they must be feeling right now.  So many things have crossed my mind.  I wondered what I would say to them when I see them.  I wondered how they could continue to live in a home that was so lovingly built 3 years ago to one that would now hold a memory that would be unbearable.  How does life go on after you loose a child in any manner, especially to suicide?

 


 

 

Teen suicide is not unheard of in today’s world.  Why do kids think it’s  acceptable to torture another person?  Why are we so accepting of bullying, and so willing to chalk it up as kids being kids?   Most importantly, what’s happening to our parenting skills? I guarantee children aren’t just acting out and bullying other kids in school.  They’re misbehaving at home too.  Behavior problems start at home.  To single out another person and torture them is beyond my comprehension.

My daughter was bullied in school, and I’m here to tell you that it was not acceptable to me.  I took action.  I let the school and the parents of the girls involved know that there would be hell to be paid if it continued with my child.  At that point there was two things that you didn’t mess with 1) My daughter and 2) My money.  I labored for 8 hours to bring my daughter into the world.  She was an investment.  I invested all the love, time and money that I had into my daughter.  She became my life and my most prized possession.  I’ve just added to my portfolio now there’s my grandson and granddaughter.  Anyway, I told other parents that if they weren’t investing in their child, that wasn’t my problem.  And, they weren’t going to make it my daughter’s either.

As my readers know, I have been writing about bullying for some time.  Unfortunately, bullying has an effect on families for the rest of their life.  You just don’t get over it as some people think.  It affects your self-esteem and self-worth.  Children don’t understand that the problem really lies with the kids who are doing the bullying.  As children it is easy to believe what the other person is saying about them.  Parents must counteract bullies.  Children today have no respect for authority, their peers or themselves.  They think it’s okay to just say or do whatever they please.  I would venture to say they have no respect for their parents either.

Wake up America, this is a serious problem in this country.  It is not kids being kids.  The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, works with a charity as a result of being bullied herself.  Her parents pulled her out of the school where the trauma was occurring.  I wonder what her bullies think of her now.

Finally, I pray that this family finds peace and the strength that they need to move through this difficult time.  No parent should have to lay their child to rest.  Parents, teen suicide is real in America.  And, it could become a reality in your life at any time.  Teen suicide changes everyone’s life.  All will remind in my prayers.

Christening Day – Selecting A Cake

First, I remembered the night my daughter called to tell me she would be dedicating my grandson to the Lord. Oh what a blessing.  Although I hadn’t said anything to her, I had wondered when the day would come.  We had to make the day special.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on selecting a Christening Day Cake.

We planned everything from his Christening suit to the meal after the service.  I chose his Christening suit and hosted the meal after the service. My daughter and her husband attended the required classes at church and contacted those who had been selected as the Godparents.  A role that is not taken lightly in our family. After all, the Godparents are involved in his upbringing and could possibly raise him if the parents are unable to.

 

 

Besides baby and the dedication, the cake will be the center of attention. We wanted to carry a religious theme into the meal.  As a result, we decided to incorporate the cross on his cake. It turned out beautifully. We selected yellow cake with a butter cream icing rather than fondant.  I have found that fondant icing can be pretty to look at, but removing the fondant and getting to the icing is difficult.  As a result, it makes it hard to really enjoy the cake. I wanted everyone to enjoy desert.

So, not only was the cake beautiful it was delicious. To stay within our budget, we had the bakery at one of our local grocery stores create the cake rather than a private bakery. Their cakes are just as delicious, and we saved enough to purchase these adorable Tiny Blessing Blue 10″ Octagonal Dinner Plates (8 count) and the accessories.  They are available in pink and blue.

 

We purchased the dinner and cake plates as well as the cups, napkins, and a matching table cloth for the food table. We purchased light blue table clothes and utensils at the Party Store. The tables turned out just as special as the day. I ordered the plates and cups on-line, however, Target now carries the set in pink and blue.

Xavier dropped his pacifier for a taste of the creamy goodness on the cake. He loved his pacifier, so we knew that we were in for a special treat with the desert. We served potato salad, pasta salad, meatballs, green beans and corn and fresh fruit followed by ice cream and cake under white tents. There was a wonderful breeze, so the setting was perfect.

Traveling With Toddlers

Traveling with your toddler can be difficult.  A mother and her 2 year old son were kicked off a Southwest Airlines flight from Amarillo, TX to San Jose, TX because her son was disruptive.  According to a Southwest Airline representative, the child was so disruptive passengers were unable to hear pre-flight instructions. The child repeated over and over, “Go Plane Go” and “I Want Daddy”.

Words – Slang of the 60’s

Today, I’m sharing parenting advice on slang of the 60’s.  So, I recently celebrated my birthday, and I’ve been reflecting on my years growing up.  I born was in 1960.  You remember the 1960’s or at least heard of the hippies, psychedelic era, go go boots, hot pants, mini skirts, the peace sign, and Woodstock.  I’m a 60’s baby.  As a matter of fact, there was alot going on during those years.  I thought I would bring back a few memories or provide a little education for those who were born years later.

The 60’s were big in American History.  There was the Civil Rights Movement, John F. Kennedy assassination and the hippie era happening.  Teaching children about this time in history is important.

I was born in the fall of 1960 to be exact.  Additionally, I would have been between the age of newborn – 9 years old during this time. I grow up in a small town, so there wasn’t many places to go or hang out. We just walked around town and just had fun. I remember seeing teenagers sitting on what we called “The Wall” just hanging out. They wore jeans, headbands, tie-dyed shirts, love beads, and walked barefoot or wore flip flops. It was the era of Peace and Love.
One of my fondest memories is my mother buying dye so we could tie-dye shirts in the backyard. She purchased tee shirts for us, and helped us place the rubberbands on the shirts in just the right spots. She repeated constantly, “Tie them tight”. It was important that the rubber band be on the shirt tightly so we achieve the right circular affect. We had wore bell bottom jeans and peace signs. We had a great time.

 

Here is some of the slang of the 60’s that was used:

 

  • A Gas – Having fun.
  • Ape: Upset, emotional etc.
  • Bad Ass – Someone who appeared tough
  • Ball – To party or have a good time
  • Bum a Smoke – Borrow a cigarette from somebody
  • Bitchin’ – Great or good
  • Book – Leave the scene
  • Bookin’ – Moving fast
  • Bread – Money
  • Bummed Out – Down or depressed
  • Burn Rubber – Squeal tires and leave a rubber burn
  • Candyass – Someone seen as a wimp or uncool
  • Chick – a girl/woman
  • Clean – Looking good
  • Crash – Go to bed or to sleep
  • Cruising – To drive around town looking for members of the opposite sex.
  • Decked Out – Dressed Up
  • Dibs – To own it.
  • Dig – Do you understand what’s being said?
  • Don’t Sweat It – Don’t let something bother you.
  • Far-out – Sonething is awesome
  • Fine as Wine – Someone who is good-looking
  • Fink – Tattletale
  • Five Finger Discount – Something obtained by stealing it
  • Flower Child – A Hippie
  • Fox – A good looking chick
  • Fuzz – The Police
  • Groovy – Something is cool or nice.
  • Hang Loose – Take it easy
  • Hickey – A passion mark on the neck.

  • Stacked – A girl with a nice shape.
  • The Bird – The middle finger.
  • Threads – Nice Clothes.
