It All Starts With You

Trenton Shelton

Make The World Respect Your Greatness.  That was Trent Shelton’s message this week-end at Dream Chasers in Richmond, VA.  I’m a big fan of Trent Shelton.  I’m a lover of his quotes and I have read several of his books.  He’s a great motivator.  I missed him when he was in my area, so I decided to pack a bag and check him out at a venue several hours away with my sister.  My sister is a Life Coach at Full Steem Ahead.  It was so worth it.  If you’re not familiar with him, check him out here.  If he’s in your area, go see him.  He’s a great motivator and keeps it real. He’s funny, thought provoking, and has a genuine way of getting his message across.  His audience is diverse, but mainly consists of women of all ages and ethnicity.

I was impressed with this young man’s story.  He was a star football player at Baylor University, which is a private Baptist university in Waco, Texas.  Trent was drafted into the NFL; however, he didn’t excel as he had hoped.  Listening to his story, he didn’t come close to being a star in the NFL although he earned a good paycheck while he was there.  As a matter of fact he stated, “When I was financially stable, I was depressed.”  He spent time partying, running women and just throwing his life away. He was eventually cut from the NFL and had to figure out what he was going to do with  his life.   He finally accepted that he had to turn his life around, and so he did.

He now shares his story across the country and internationally. What I like about this young man is that there is no glamour, special effects or a big show when he’s speaking.  He just speaks from the heart, shares his story as it happened, and tells you how you can turn your life around too.   Trent stated, “Success was the foundation for my failure.”   Funny, we spend so much time and energy reaching for success.  He’s a perfect example of how quickly you can fall or on another note, how you don’t always reach the destination that you have set for yourself.  Maybe God has another plan for you too.

He spoke for about an hour, and I didn’t drift away once.  I actually took notes, because I know that God is not done with me yet either.  I’m still learning and growing.  Trent is young enough to be my son, but I learned from him this week-end.  You never know who is being sent to teach lessons that you need in your life.  He is articulate and engaging with the audience.  At one point in my life, I may have judged him with the dreads, tattoos, and the hat turned around backwards, but he is an educated young man who knows his mission in life. Never judge a book by it’s cover.  You must seek to know what’s underneath that cover.

I mentioned that the majority of his audience was ladies, and his lesson was Make The World Respect Your Greatness, right.  At the end of his speech, his assistant made an announcement that I found shocking.  I had just listened to this wonderful speech and this is a summary of what I heard next: Trent is available to take pictures with you; however, those who wish to take pictures with him are expected to keep your hands to yourself.  Can you believe it?  Yes, ladies show some respect for yourself and show respect for him. If you can’t follow that, we will remove you from the building.  I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.  It seems that his messages were being missed by a few ladies in the audience, and he needed to let them know that he wasn’t interested in being touched or touching them.  If this message was directed toward you, you may have your answer on why you’re disrespected by men and why your life is out of control.  I applaud this young man, he’s focused on his mission.

My turn – ladies get a grip on yourself and get a grip on your life.   If you don’t respect yourself, you can’t possibly Show The World How Great You Are.  This is the message this young man was sending.  I’m sending it to you now, please grab hold of it and allow it to sink in.  Allow it to permeate every corner of your being.  If you don’t, nothing will ever change for you.  You will remain where you are and you will continue to be disrespected by the people in your life.  I urge you to get a copy of his book, Breaking Your Own Heart.   Why?  Because It All Starts With You. Who’s your favorite motivator, and what lesson have you learned from them?

How To Freeze Fresh Corn

freezing fresh corn

Fresh corn will be on the market soon and I can’t wait.  I love it grilled, in soup, in chowder, boiled, you name it.  My favorite is Silver Queen. It’s a late corn, but so worth the wait.  Freezing fresh corn is a yearly ritual for me, but shucking it is another issue.  But, I found a solution and worry no more  The microwave is a life saver when freezing fresh corn.  Continue reading ad you will find out how.  Be sure to check out my other backyard vegetable gardening tips too.

I shucked, boiled, cut and froze about 100 ears last year.  Preparing corn for the freezer is easy and so worth it.  I purchase my corn from a local farmer.  He sells it at a bargain rate. He removes the corn from the stalks the day before he picks it.  So, it doesn’t get any fresher than this. Purchasing it this way saves space in my garden for other goodies too.

freezing fresh corn

Once I get it home, the work begins.  I shuck and remove all silk from the corn.  In about batches of 10 – 15, I boil them for about a minute or two in a large stock pot.

You will need to prepare an ice batch for these babies.  This should be completed before you start the boiling process.  An ice bath is imperative in your preparation of the corn for the freezer.  You need to remove the cobs from the boiling water after 2 minutes and immediately place them in the ice water.

The ice water will stop the cooking process.  This is important because you don’t want to cook it as if you’re preparing it to eat.  Although I do leave a few cobs in the boiling water, because I do want to eat them, lol.

Once the corn has cooled down about 5 – 10 minutes, cut the corn off the cob in a large bowl.  I use an extra large bowl and a chef’s knife to remove the kernels. I also use the corn holders on one end, it makes it easier to handle the corn while removing the kernels.

Once I have the kernels removed from the cob, I pack quart freezer bags.  Buy quality bags and make sure the bags are sealed properly.  I don’t bother to date the bags because they will be gone by spring.  I’m thinking of purchasing a vacuum sealer this year. If you have one, this would be a perfect time to use it.

Quart bags are perfect for my household.  I can just pull out a bag for soup, mix with green beans, fry it or however I want to use it.  It’s as fresh as it was the day I purchased it.  Put a few bags in your freezer to use this winter.  You won’t regret it.  Stay tuned for my post on blanching tomatoes and green beans.

Take Your Children With You

What does this picture say to you?  A thousand words come to
my mind, but what it really speaks to me is Take Your Children With You.  All it takes
is a split second for someone to snatch your child.  Is this picture real enough
for you?
I’m so thankful this precious baby was found safe after being
left under a bush along a Houston road by a carjacker.  I can only image the horror this poor mother felt, when she saw her car being driven away with her 8 month old baby in the back seat.

Now that I know the baby is safe, I have to ask what the
mother was thinking leaving the baby alone in the car at a gas station.  She stepped inside to pay for gas, and when she looked out the window she saw her car being driven away.  Now I’m
not excusing the carjacker’s crime, a criminal is a criminal.  Let’s just put
him behind bars where he belongs when he is caught.  Better yet, let’s chain him to the bush where he
left the baby and just leave him there for a while.  Let’s see how he likes it.  Can you imagine the things that could have happened to this child just being left under a bush along a road?  Luckily, a jogger heard her crying, when to look for her and than called the police.  An Amber Alert had been issued.

How many times have we watched television and shed tears
for a mother who left her child in the car for a moment and they vanished.  How
many times have we seen mothers crying because they only turned their back for a
second and their child just disappeared?  How many times has it been said, don’t
leave your child/children alone in the car?  When when we learn?

Why do we think child snatching only happens to other
people?  We’re always the exceptions aren’t we?  People are proven wrong day
after day.  To a point where I had to stop watching Nancy Grace who is an
advocate for children.  Nancy comes locked and loaded, but I just couldn’t
stomach all the stories about children disappearing or being abused night after
night.  I admire her tenacity and the fact that she is an advocate for children,
but her show just became too much.  Now that I’m thinking about it, maybe watching her show for about a month should be a requirement for all parents.  I
guarantee you will walk away believing that it is unsafe to leave your child
alone in a car in a public area for even a second.

We must be aware of our surroundings at all times and we must
never make the mistake of leaving our children alone in the open for a second.
The world has changed people, and if you don’t take heed you will find yourself
a victim of the heartless, senseless, criminals that prey on the naive and
unsuspecting.  They stand behind you in
the grocery store line, they hold doors open for you, and they wait until you
let your guard and they spring on you.  There’s no profile for them, but there
is one for us.  We see the world through rose colored glasses and we will
eventually leave the door open for a crime to be committed because we’re naive and unsuspecting.

Yep, we want to believe that the United States of America is
still standing on a foundation of honesty, goodwill, peace and love.
We still believe that a hand shake and our word will bond us or simply a smile. It’s a different world in which we we live people and we need to wake up.  We ask who would harm an innocent child?  There are many, who would harm your child in a blink of an eye.

I’m sure the carjacking and her missing baby will haunt this mother forever, but I pray that she can find peace now.

Sun Burn Remedy: Aloe Plant

Summer is here, and we will be spending hours on the beach or at the pool.  Aloe plants hold the perfect remedy for sunburned skin.  The gel inside the plant cools sunburn on contact, and has been found to penetrate the skin 500% better than water.

Applying the gel is easy, just break off a stalk and squeeze the gel directly onto the burn.  The Aloe plant above was growing on the Chenay Bay Beach in St. Croix, VI.  It’s the biggest Aloe plant that I’ve ever seen.

I’ve been growing Aloe plants at home for years.  I use it for burns when I’m working in the kitchen.  The best thing about Aloe plants is that the stalks will grow back so don’t be afraid of destroying the plant if you break off a piece.

sunburn remedy

If you’re heading to the beach for a week and take it with you.  If I’m only going for a few days, I break off a few stalks and wrap them in a wet paper towel. I place the wet towel & stalks into a plastic bag and keep them moist during my stay.

Aloe is easy to grow. Purchase a small plant and place it in your kitchen window.  Stick them in a sunny spot and water it once a week.  They’re very forgiving, there are times when I forget to water mine for weeks.  They look great outside in the summer, just remember to bring it in once winter sets in.

The best way to prevent sunburn is to use plenty of sunblock and to wear a hat while relaxing on the beach or at the pool.  Playing in the sun can be great, but it can also be dangerous if we don’t protect ourselves.  If all else fails, put your aloe plant to use.
