14 Places to Score Cheap Sewing Supplies

Like anything else, your hobby is dependent on a budget. Not many people out there can spend as they please on their hobbies.  And therefore saving on your sewing stash is not a bad idea.  Don’t we all want to get more for our money?
Most needlecraft aficionados prefer their sewing rooms fully stocked.  However, this usually means having more than they would ever need.  After all, who wants to run out of thread or fabric in the middle of an exciting project?  Hobbies are supposed to relieve stress not cause frustration.  And I don’t know about you, but I jump at the chance of getting more for less! A dream stash of just about everything you need is certainly not as farfetched as you would have thought.

Another good thing about finding affordable supplies on sale is to be able to test out the quality of a new brand. Finding an item for less brings excitement.  Or if you have been wondering about a product, but leery about forking out the full amount puts you at an advantage.

Just be careful of buying things that may be old, especially thread. It’s very important to always buy the best quality thread, as older means weaker. That would just defeat the purpose of sewing in a big way!

To help you save money, Wunderlabel team lists 14 places where you can score cheap sewing supplies:

In guiding you through your journey to economical choices for your stitchery stockpile, we got creative and frugal at the same time. We hope you have found our list of places to score cheap sewing supplies beneficial.  Go on, you know you want to get a head start!

Get Your Kids Involved in Creating Clean Air

creating clean air

Kids usually don’t want much to do with cleaning the house. They’d rather be outside playing, and who can blame them? But the lessons they learn in childhood last a lifetime.  So, teaching children lessons in house cleaning can include the importance of creating clean air in the home.  You can teach them this lesson through different tasks.

For example, turning a chore into a fun activity can help eliminate the perceived boredom that comes with cleaning. Here are a few activities to teach kids about creating clean air in the home and keeping it clean:

Changing the Air Filters

Air filters are easy to change. Most are located in a safe and accessible spot.  This makes it safe in getting teens involved in removing and replacing them. They’re also a perfect teaching tool to show just how dirty the air filters can get.  Dirt caught in the filters is dirt that doesn’t make it into the rest of the home.  Change filters regularly.

While you may not want your children actually doing the task on their own, you can write the date of installation on the filter.  Additionally, mark the replacement date on the calendar. When the due date arrives, the kids can remind you to change the filter.  Furthermore, they can accompany you to see how much dirt was collected. It’s a simple, yet important task that gets everyone in on the action.

Turn off the Lights

Lights by themselves don’t do much in the way of generating pollution. It’s at the power generation level where the pollution occurs. The act of turning on a light bulb creates a power demand from the power plant. That demand requires fuel to generate the electricity. Encourage the kids to turn off the light when they leave a room for any length of time. It’s a great way to instill the idea of keeping the air clean without nagging. When kids are shown that their lack of action has a greater consequence to their world, they’re more likely to turn out the lights.

Energy producers are turning more and more to renewable sources instead of burning coal and wood. But this doesn’t change the need to turn out the lights. The less energy needed from any source, the better.

Open Windows at Night in Warm Weather

Air conditioning during the warmer months helps keep the home comfortable, but it also traps dust and other air pollutants inside.  Open windows at night and use fans to circulate the air. Air is cooler at night and helps the home exhaust the heat. If the AC gets turned on during the day, it won’t work as hard to cool down the home because the internal temperature is already low.

These are some of the ways you can get your family to participate in tasks that keep the air clean in the home and atmosphere. Teaching kids to become energy and pollutant aware when they’re young helps them turn into responsible adults.

We hope that you found our tips on creating clean air beneficial, and you will implement a few ideas.

Chores to Prepare for a Child’s Birthday Party

child's birthday party

Preparing for a child’s birthday party can take a lot of hard work. In addition to putting up decorations, planning games, and picking up the birthday cake, you also need to prepare your house. After all, it’s about to get invaded by a bunch of sugar-crazed kids. Before you host another birthday party, make sure you do these four chores:

Lock Away Potentially Dangerous Items

It’s easy to lose track of one or two kids when you have a dozen or more of them running around your home. Even a few minutes of unsupervised play can turn into a disaster.  Especially, when children encounter potentially dangerous items like household cleaners, weapons, and medications.

You can keep your young guests safe by locking away items that may hurt them. Putting items in the master bedroom won’t get the job done. You may think of your bedroom as a safe place where no one else goes, but kids don’t always follow your expectations. Find a place that you can secure with a lock and key.

Block Off Certain Parts of Your House

Even if your home is safe, you don’t necessarily want people wandering throughout it. Blocking off certain areas tells people that you don’t want them to enter.

It doesn’t take much effort to block off areas of your house. You can use a baby gate to prevent people from walking down hallways or lock doors to rooms that you want left alone.

Eliminate Bad Odors

Your house probably smells fine to you. Newcomers, however, may have a different experience. Over time, you get used to the way your house smells. Even if there’s a funk in the air, you may not notice it.  So, you can eliminate bad odors from your home by:

  • Locating and removing any mold or mildew
  • Running your HVAC system to filter out annoying particles in the air
  • Putting baking soda on your carpet before vacuuming
  • Cleaning your refrigerator to get rid of old food odors

Make Healthy Snacks

You probably plan to serve cake or some other confection to celebrate your child’s birthday. Considering how much sugar and fat cakes contain, you should make some healthy snacks that guests can enjoy during the party as well.

You can take the simple route by simply cutting up carrot and celery sticks. If you have time to get more involved in food preparation, consider making some yogurt popsicles, fruit kebabs, and low-sugar baked goods.

Remember that some kids have food allergies that can cause serious health problems. The most common allergies among children involve:

  • Soy
  • Tree nuts
  • Peanuts
  • Shellfish
  • Milk
  • Soy
  • Wheat

You can avoid problematic ingredients by asking parents to tell you about any food sensitivities when they RSVP for your child’s birthday party. If anyone has an allergy to an ingredient, don’t use it in any of your party’s foods.

Finally, hosting a child’s birthday party in your home is a great way to have fun, save money, and make your child feel special.  As long as you do the right chores beforehand, you can host a successful event where everyone feels welcome and safe.

Motivating Children and Getting Them Out of a Funk

Today’s your lucky day.  I’m sharing parenting tips on motivating children.  Do your kids need a bit more motivation in their lives? These days, it can be hard for school age kids to stay focused on academics and household chores.  If there were tips that helped kids try harder in school, you’d want to know all about them, right?

motivating children

A few tricks that worked for other parents

Every mom and dad wants their child to thrive. However, kids experience phases when they simply don’t feel motivated. Trouble is kids don’t always ask for help in such times. Fortunately, we’re going to tell you about some proven methods that are sure to help your kid feel more like themselves. Don’t expect a miracle, but do enjoy the results.

Kids who become frustrated easily may be especially reluctant to tell their parents what’s going on. Start a friendly conversation with your child, and be quiet when they speak. Listening is an important tool in your parental strategy.  All kids want to know that they are being heard. Let your kid know that they can talk to you about anything at any time. Doing so may help your kid have a more positive outlook on life in general, says Tutor Doctor.

Little changes and small successes

Creating a pleasant homework space where your kid doesn’t feel pressured may help them focus and enjoy schoolwork more.  Spruce up a cozy space and fill it with reference books.  Furthermore, decorate the walls with posters of their favorite music groups.  Stock the desk with plenty of office supplies.  Homework can be fun if your kid doesn’t feel pressured.

Don’t overdo it to the point of insincerity, but be sure to praise your kid often. Celebrating small successes like a B grade on an important test can help an unmotivated kid realize their past accomplishments.  It may also motivate them to even more important successes.  Praise often to encourage more of the same.

Optimism and artwork

If you approach life with optimism and forge ahead despite setbacks and disappointments, your kid may take a similar positive approach. Encourage your kids to persist in the face of absurdity.  Encourage them to laugh every time you can. Allow your child to fail gracefully. Doing so may help them move through life in a more balanced and happier way, say parenting pros at the Child Development Institute.

Encourage art in your kid’s life. Permit them to download a free coloring book app and watch their mood improve exponentially. Kids who engage in artistic and musical endeavors tend to fare better and may use their “blue mood” to create beautiful works of art.

motivating children

Give Them a Challenge

Sometimes, kids get into a funk because they don’t feel challenged enough. They believe any school project given to them is easy.  Unfortunately, this means they will look for distractions once they have finished the work, which can impact behavior and affect others. The result is a total lack of motivation to do anything school-related.  Especially, if they are being reprimanded for their behavior.

You can help them overcome this behavior by working with their teachers or coaches to give them a challenge. If they have shown an aptitude for more advanced material, introduce your kids to it. You can use a word finder activity if they seem capable of cracking word puzzles.  Kids who have a passion for advanced Math can tackle more complicated formulas ahead of their grade. Even if the initial activities are too challenging, you can adjust the difficulty until you find something suitable.

Everyone feels down in the dumps now and then. But, with your encouragement and our tips on motivating children, your kids may adjust and cope with life’s little disappointments.  If a “funk” lasts for more than a few days, consult your pediatrician or family doctor.

Tips on Making Gardening Easier

gardening tips

As life becomes more demanding, we realize that time is of the essence. Work, cooking, children, school runs, housework and laundry.  The list is never-ending.  But with summer creeping up fast, there’s another job to throw into the mix, gardening.  We all know that feeling when the neighbours look down their noses at us because our garden isn’t pristine and flawless.

Fear not! There are ways to adapt your garden to make it far easier to manage and save you that all-important time. From storage to installing artificial grass, here are some methods and techniques you can use to make gardening  minimum effort and stress.  Check out our making gardening easier tips below.  I have other gardening tips too.

gardening tips

Artificial Grass

When it comes to grass, you can fake it all the way.  Artificial grass doesn’t need to be fertilized or watered.  And you don’t need the lawnmower anymore. Fresh green grass can make all the difference to a garden and totally transform an outside area. It looks so good that it can fool anyone into thinking that your synthetic turf is the real deal.

The design, texture and color make artificial grass feel just like a natural lawn. The best thing about it is that there is absolutely no maintenance required. You can install it and leave it to look amazing. It’s also environmentally friendly because there is no water usage, no carbon emissions from a petrol lawn mower and no fertilizers. It’s win-win.

Use Kitchen Scraps

A really easy way to give your soil some nutrients is to mix coffee grounds into the potting soil or sprinkle it near to the base of the plants. If you have rose bushes, you can also plant banana peelings underneath.  Banana peels will give them potassium, which will encourage them to flower. Egg shells are amazing for deterring slugs from your beds because they don’t like the sharp edges.

When your neighbors have a luscious vegetable patch, you will understandably want one too. Well, now you can grow your own vegetables with the help of your food scraps, saving time and helping the environment. Mushrooms, garlic, potatoes and celery are all vegetables you can regrow just from planting the scraps.

Storage

Smart storage of your gardening tools can save you time and money. Get a large box and fill it to the brim with sand. You can then easily store your tools in there, whilst keeping it in a warm and dry space. Just simply wipe away the dirt after use and stab the metal part into the sand. The sand will pull the moisture away, keeping your tools rust free and ensuring they remain sharp.

Add Mulch

Mulch is amazing, it gets rid of pests, stops beds from getting too hot or cold and prevents those annoying weeds from growing. You can even DIY mulch yourself – just grind down fallen leaves, dead wood, yard waste and even shredded office paper. Eventually, the homemade mulch will just turn into soil amendment.

Keep a Diary

It may seem like an added chore now, but it will save you time in the long run. Keep a little notebook which can be your gardening diary. Write down the things that do and do not work. It will be like gold dust to you during the following year because you’re bound to have forgotten by then! You can refer to it to easily to see what you need to do in order to maintain your beautiful garden.

Last, take the stress out of gardening with these top tips.  Making gardening easier is what you are striving for.  These tips will make your time spent pruning a little bit smoother. You will never have to feel ashamed of your garden again!

How to Choose a Babysitter You Can Trust

how to choose a babysitter

Every parent needs a break or a night on the town. Even so, you still want to protect your child while you’re gone.  Hiring the right babysitter is critical. Otherwise, you’ll spend the evening worrying about the safety of your kid and not enjoying yourself. Here’s a guide on how to choose a babysitter you can trust.

Ask for References

You don’t want a babysitter to learn on the job, especially not with your children. You want someone with lots of experience. When you advertise that you’re looking for a reliable babysitter, you should list your expected criteria. After all, you’re an employer hiring someone for a job.

Potential workers will understand the necessity of this action, and the best ones will have a ready list of references. You should check a site like Care.com, as the best babysitters will have profiles complete with user reviews. Obviously, you should only consider babysitters with strong reviews.  How to choose a babysitter should start with a strong emphasis on references.

When you ask for references, request at least two. You should favor someone with more than that, though. Someone with a lot of references has proven they’re capable of engaging with all types of children. That’s the person you want for the job. Note that they may charge more, but you should think of the extra money as insurance. You won’t stress about your babysitter if you trust the person.

how to choose a babysitter

Set Up a Meeting

Of course, even the best babysitters will struggle with some children. Your kid may act too boisterous with strangers, making the gig feel too stressful for your new worker.  Alternately, you may have a shy child who doesn’t open up easily with strangers. That’s not good, either. Your child will feel like you’re punishing him or her any time that you leave him or her with the babysitter.

To avoid these potential issues, you want to set up an introductory meeting. Watch how your child reacts when he or she is in the presence of the babysitter. Does he or she look comfortable and engaged, or is he or she behaving abnormally? Also, pay attention to your own interactions with the babysitter. You don’t want to invite someone you can’t stand into your home. Your happiness is important, too.

You should know rather quickly whether the introduction is going well. When it’s not, you’re well within your rights to cut it short. You won’t hire a babysitter your child doesn’t like, so don’t waste the worker’s time. Alternately, when your kid likes the babysitter, you can close the deal and begin to negotiate rates.

Perform a Background Check

While you might trust someone based on his or her references and introduction, you still need to do your homework. A failure to perform due diligence endangers your child, and you can even be guilty of a crime in some states if you allow a sex offender to care for your child. The statistics about sex offenders posing as babysitters are scary. You want to approach the situation professionally. Perform a background check to verify that a babysitter isn’t a sex offender. This single step will give you piece of mind.

Hiring the right babysitter requires some parental consideration and effort. By using the tips on how to choose a babysitter, you will eventually settle on the perfect person for your kids.

Fun Springtime Garden Projects for Kids

garden projects for kids
Kids absolutely love to dig in the dirt, help in the garden, and experience life growing around them.  Helping mom and dad in the backyard offers kids fresh air, exercise, learning experiences, and family bonding.  It’s a win-win situation, and what’s not to love about that? With a little bit of patience and some planning, even parents who are novices in the garden can enjoy this wonderful backyard experience with their kids.  Check out my other gardening tips.  If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve got the perfect garden projects for kids:

Plant Garden Bulbs Together:

Beautify your landscaping with beautiful blooming flowers, Hostas and elephant ears this year. Let your child help select the plant bulbs and plan out your soon-to-be gorgeous garden beds. Spring and fall are the standard planting times for bulbs. Let the kiddos help you dig the holes, insert the bulbs the right way, and measure the distance apart with a ruler. Your kids will be thrilled with what blooms the following season and feel so proud of their accomplishment.

unnamed-2 2

Build a Kid-Size Garden

First, give your child the gift of their own garden. And by gift, we mean the pleasure and learning they’ll get from it because it truly is a gift to them. You can buy a ready to build raised garden bed at a big box home store, build a DIY version with leftover wood, or give your child an area of your regular garden and fence it off.

Furthermore, let them pick a few veggies to plant and let them be responsible for the planting and watering (with your guidance, of course). When a child sees their fruits and veggies go from seeds to the dinner table, they’ll feel so proud! Studies show that garden projects for kids is a great way to teach them to grow their own food.  Most importantly, kids are more apt to eat what they grown.  So go ahead and plant the rainbow!

Plant a Butterfly Garden

Also, this fun idea is probably the easiest and reaps the most benefits. Pick an area of your yard or use a big container planter and fill with rich, black soil. Pick up an inexpensive packet of Butterfly Garden Seeds. Let your child sprinkle the seeds on the dirt and water. Watch all the different varieties of flowers bloom and attract butterflies and humming birds.

Start a Worm Composter

So, your first thought might be “oh yuck” but your kids and garden will love your worm composter. You can buy a pre-made composter or build your own DIY version for around $5. It’s very easy to make and only requires a bit of drilling holes and setting up the bin.

Vermicomposting requires worm compost bedding and compost worms (can be ordered online). They will need to be watered and fed which your kids can be responsible for. The compost created by the worms makes your garden grow like crazy and healthy too. Your kids will be more fascinated by the worms.

Add Bug Repellant Plants Around Play Areas

Next, pick up a few Citronella or Lemongrass from your local garden store to use by your children’s play areas. Both Citronella and Lemongrass repel mosquitoes and flies, which are both a nuisance to kids playing. Using a few containers you have around the garage, fill with dirt and fill with the Citronella or Lemongrass plants and water. Place around the outer edges of your kids’ swing set and sandbox.

Make Homemade Stepping Stones

Last, this project may be a little messy, but it’s so much fun for the whole family!  So, the difficulty of this project will depend on the age of the children. Find rocks on your property or a nearby park to make your stepping stones.  Give them a good washing with soap and water and then paint them with non-washable paint.

Another fun garden project for kids is googly eye balls glued on to make “pet rocks.”  This is a great craft to do as a family.

A more advanced approach is making your own stepping stones with Plaster of Paris.  Just mix the Plaster of Paris with water in an old bucket, and pour into molds.  Also, fun molds are available at art supply stores or you can use simple disposable aluminum baking pans. While the Plaster of Paris is still wet, you can etch in names, add gem stones or other finds, and paint when dried. Stepping stones also make great gifts for grandparents and friends.

Last, Max Warehouse is your one stop shop for all your home and garden needs, home organization and improvement, auto, lawn care and everything in between.  We have great products for your garden projects for kids too. Whether your project is large or small, they have your back!  Free shipping over $50.

Finally, we hope that you enjoyed our garden projects for kids, and will select a few to implement in your garden this spring.

Sleep Tips: Falling and Staying Asleep In the Midst of Commotion

sleeping tips

Traditionally, noise does not accompany a great night of rest. However, whether it’s a noisy roommate, undesirable conditions, or too much light, obstructions exist. Therefore, you need to get accustomed to sleeping when conditions are sub par. Here’s a few sleep tips on how to fall asleep and stay asleep when noise and other undesirable conditions won’t stop or go away.

 Create More Noise

It seems counterproductive, yet if you create your own white noise to drown out other sounds, you could lull yourself to sleep. Try placing a humidifier/dehumidifier somewhere adjacent to your bed. The rumbling would initially seem like a disturbance, yet it’s constant and does well in eclipsing other sounds in the immediate area.

 Use Earplugs

Some people don’t like sticking things in their ears.  They believe that it impedes their ability to hear intruders entering the home, the phone ringing, etc. However, a tried and true way to cancel out other noise is to block your ability to hear it.  If the solution sounds attractive, you’ll be happy to hear that a wide range of selections exists. Actually, some report that earplugs work too well.  They make it difficult to wake to alarms and hear other things.  Additionally, find apps at this link that help with waking on time.

 Muffle the Sound

Use fabric and other materials to deafen sounds outside of your room. Wrap your door in heavy fabric that will muffle the sound.  Moreover, you could put soundproof fabric on your walls. The heavier the material, the better it will block sound. If you don’t like the thought of fabric, try shopping for heavier wallpaper or tapestries.

 Spray Scented Oils

Scents help drift people to sleep by first making them at peace and relaxed. For example, lavender oil is known to help people relax and is sometimes used in therapy and sleep studies. Many products on the market incorporate oils, chamomile, passionflower teas, etc.

 Exercise and Stretch to Exhaustion

Getting too tired to be bothered by noise is another way to get to sleep. Some enjoy reserving time in the evenings to stretch, lift weights, do a cardiovascular activity, etc. However, such a solution could backfire since working out can also make one feel energized afterward. It may be best to find a sweet spot, such as going to the gym or working out three to two hours before bedtime.

 Go to the Source

Another sleep tips is to try going straight to the source.  For example, if it’s a noisy radiator, maybe you need to call maintenance for help. If it’s a noisy roommate, it may be much more effective to have a conversation and ask them to be quiet. Maybe it’s not that noisy; perhaps you have a mild sleeping condition that can be addressed through medical attention.

 Make it Darker

In some cases, you may think that it’s noise that’s keeping you awake while it’s really too much light. Some people are very sensitive to light.  And if you are trying to sleep during the day or in a room that lets in too much interior light, it could be incredibly difficult to get to sleep. Try draping sheets over the windows while you’re sleeping, putting a towel underneath your door to block light from leaking in, etc.  Also, light blocking drapes are known to work.

We hope that you have found our sleep tips beneficial, and you will implement a few suggestions in your life.

Raising Boys to Become Men

Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on raising boys. Before we become parents, many of us imagine that girls will be the nightmare children. There are heartbreaks, falling outs, and periods to deal with.  Boys in comparison seem easy. They’re happy to hang out with their mates and play computer games most of the time.

Boys in general, appear to have a much more straightforward way of looking at the world. But, when you have to raise a boy, you realize things aren’t as easy as they seem. That’s especially true when the terrible teens strike. Your sweet boy becomes someone you don’t recognize. You could say the same about girls, of course, but it’s actually easier to help them through the troubles.

raising boys

Raising Boys

Additionally, the main issue through the teen years is your child’s struggle to find themselves.  To find their true self, they may have to go through many phases. They try on different versions of themselves to see which fits. Girls are more vocal about what they’re trying, and feeling.  Unfortunately, boys may retreat. Of course, depression is one thing that every parent fears during those trying times.

It’s worth noting that girls are statistically more prone to depression.  It’s also important to note that boys are more likely to take their own lives.  In fact, globally, males are 1.8 times more likely to commit suicide. It’s hard to judge what this means, other than that more girls are talking about it, while boys suffer in silence.  All the more reason we should do what we can to help our sons find their place. Here are few tips for raising boys and helping them become the men they are meant to be:

raising boys

Take Him Shopping

Unfortunately, no teen boy is going to jump at the chance to go shopping.  But, it’s important you try to encourage him.  Make the trip as appealing as possible by taking only him.   The trip could be to reward him by buying a new computer game.  Or a new skateboard could tempt him if he’s a skater.

Throughout your shopping trip, let your son take the lead.  Ask questions, but try not to dictate what he shows an interest in. Your pointing things out will irritate him, and ensure he doesn’t engage in the process. Think of him as a frightened gazelle; offer your hand, and let him come to you.  A fast movement will send him running.

Most importantly, don’t judge anything he picks out. The fact he’s made a selection at all is a massive step. It’s also an exercise of trust on his part. He’s reaching out and showing you what he likes.  If you knock him down, it’ll be a while before he takes such a risk again. You may not like the fashion he’s chosen, but it’s what he wants.  Hopefully, he’ll ride the wave and forget that fashion in a few years.

For now, compliment his choices and tell him he looks great.   Also, it’s worth keeping the trip as short as possible. Girls may enjoy long days of browsing through shops, but most boys won’t feel the same. Limit the trip to about two hours.  You can always do it again if you feel the need.  Once your son has a style he’s comfortable with, you may see a different side of him. Compliment him when he wears something new, and watch his confidence grow.

Design a Comfortable Space

Designing a child’s bedroom can be a daunting task. When they’re young, the main choices were up to you. And there was always the safe option of falling back on their favorite television characters. What boy’s going to sniff at a Superman room?  None that we can think of.  As with anything, the perfect room decoration becomes harder to master as your boy grows up. To make matters worse, their bedroom becomes more important during their teen years. We all know the cliche of the teen who locks themselves in their room.

We can guarantee that’ll happen to you. This isn’t cause for worry, either. This self-enforced isolation is all part of your teen finding themselves. Spending time alone is important for every aspect of self-discovery. When we’re around other people, it’s much harder to know who we are. So, don’t fight against this isolation. Don’t make constant attempts to drag your teen from his den. Doing this will only pull him away from that important discovery work he’s doing.

Instead, do everything possible to give him a room that he feels comfortable in.  If he doesn’t believe his room reflects who he is, he’s less likely to feel as though he has anywhere to belong. Much like with clothes, let him make the big decisions. It’s best you do the decoration, but let him tell you what he wants.  Most importantly, don’t judge.  If he wants black walls, let him have them.  It’s his room, after all. It has no significant effect on the rest of the house. And, the chances are that he’ll return to a different color over time.

Raising Boys Includes Respecting His Decisions

At some point, children are going to make decisions that we don’t agree with.  Most of the disagreements will happen through the teen years. So, it’s important that you do everything possible to respect the decisions your teen is making. If could be a decision as dramatic as choosing a new religion.  They could make a decision like buying a cross necklace.  Show your support. Take an interest in his new purchase and passion. It’s a good way to build some understanding and to open up communication.

It may be that his decisions are less drastic than choosing a new religion.  But, they’re important all the same. If he’s starting to listen to music you don’t know anything about, respect that. Don’t put it down. And, never utter the phrase ‘it’s a phase.’  If anything, it’ll make him feel as though you don’t take him seriously, which isn’t what you want.

In some cases, his decisions are going to need more than your respect. They may require your active encouragement. This is the best outcome you can hope for. It may be that he depends on you to get him to and from a class he’s enrolled in. Never make him feel as though this is a hindrance. Adjust your plans, and tell him you’d be more than happy to help out. Again, this will help the two of you to form that all-important bond.

Chances are, you and your son don’t get much one on one time. Another tips for raising boys is to make one on one time.  He can duck out of a conversation whenever he wants to at home. But in the car, he doesn’t have that choice but to talk. That’s not to say that you should use this time to grill him. Quite the opposite. Use it instead, to have the day to day chats that are missing from your normal life. Take the time to find out more about him!

Raising Boys Means Allowing Him Freedom

Another one of our tips for raising boys is to loosen the reins during this time. This is probably the hardest point on this list, but it’s the most important. Too many parent and child relationships are destroyed during this stage. That’s because you’ll be fighting hard to hold on, while your child struggles against your grip. Save yourself the effort and accept that now is not the time to assert your parental dominance.

For the first time in your son’s life, he’ll want to spend time away from you. It may be that he starts going out with friends, or makes plans without including you. It can be a hard thing to get your head around. A few years before, he depended on you for every trip he took outside of school. Now, it’s as though he doesn’t even consider you.

Of course, it’s important you stay sensible, too. He may be a teen now, but he’s still in your care. Instead of demanding who he’s with and where he’s going, sit him down and explain this. The first time he takes a solo outing is the perfect opportunity to raise the subject. Explain that respect is a two-way street. You can only respect that he is his own person if he respects you enough to tell you his plans.  When that happens, try not to get angry. Instead, remind him of what you discussed, and why it’s important.  We hope that you found our tips for raising boys beneficial.
