Tips When Choosing Camps For Kids

Sending kids to camp can be a hard decision to make. There are pros and cons, but in truth, some parents don’t have a choice.  For working or single parents, a camp can be the best option for summer. The good news is that camps can be a fantastic experience for your child.  So, treat your child with respect and involve them in decisions. After all, they will be spending lots of time there.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on choosing camps for kids.

Talk It Through With the Kids

Have an open conversation about camp with your child.  Approach the subject by asking them how they feel about going to a camp. Don’t try to sway them either way, just listen to their answer.  Be honest and explain that it will make beneficial for both of you.  Both of you may be able to come to an agreement together.  Keep the conversation open throughout the process.  You will want to absorb the pros and cons if your child has any.  Furthermore, you will need to weigh them so you can ensure your child is on board with the idea.  If your child is opposed, another alternative may be better.

Choose the Right Camp

Choosing the right camp is essential to ensuring your child has a good time.  If they have a good time, they’re more likely to want to go again next summer.  Focus on your child’s hobby when coming to a decision.  Sending a child that is more intellectual and sensitive child to a sports camp would be an obvious mistake!  There are so many camps to choose from.  As a result, finding one to suit your child should not be difficult. Various companies can help you get an idea of what’s available.  Search our summer camp directory and others like it to see options for your next summer camp location.  Again, keep your children involved in the decision process.  Discuss the activities that are offered by the camp and be sure to get their opinion.  Show them the website and any pictures available. Get them excited.

Generate Excitement

After you have selected a camp, go on a shopping trip.  Talk to them often about the fun things they’ll be able to do. Buying things for the camp is another way to build excitement. Buy books and clothes specifically for camp.  You can use them as an incentive to look forward to camp.

Finally, we hope our Tips for choosing a camp for kids will help in assisting you and your child with choosing a camp.  If it’s their first time, they are bound to have reservations.  Talking them through fears will help ensure that they have something to look forward to.

14 Reasons You Need To Get An Outdoor Pool!

Swimming is something we all do as kids, and then as we get older a lot of us start to lose interest.  It’s not because it’s not fun, but as we get older we have other things to do.  We get hang-ups about our bodies in a way that few kids really do. That’s not to say it never happens to kids; regrettably it does.  But whatever age we are, we can all benefit from time spent in the pool.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on why families should purchase backyard pools.

backyard pools

If you’ve already researched the pros of  backyard pools or just starting to get more use from the one you have, you’re on the right track.  There are so many reasons having a backyard pool is an excellent choice.  The reasons range from the obvious health benefits to many others.  Although it’s not cheap, the benefits will pay for itself.  Particularly if you have the climate to use it year round.

Swimming Is Some Of The Best Exercise You’ll Get

backyard pools

A lot of people talk about swimming as a low-impact form of exercise,  and in some ways it is.  It is an excellent way of getting aerobic and cardio exercise, which everyone needs.  It doesn’t put much pressure on muscles, and if you struggle with endurance time in the pool is a great way to build it.

Getting In The Pool Is A Great Way To Cool Off

It’s a fact that, globally, temperatures are on the rise, and are staying higher for longer periods of time.  It is also a fact that heatwaves are happening more often.  Heatwaves has its benefits for those who love the sun. However, anyone who says that it’s not occasionally uncomfortable is either untruthful or some sort of lizard. We’re not built to sustain heat indefinitely. Getting in the pool is heaven on hot, steamy days like these.

Swimming Is A Communal Form Of Exercise

backyard pools

Going to the gym has its place. We all benefit from running machines and exercise bikes, but it’s not for everyone. It’s certainly not “fun for all the family.” You don’t really get to have a fun chat as you’re pounding the treadmill. That’s not least because you fear being sling-shot into the weights machines if you pause for a moment.  Using backyard pools at your leisure makes it a family thing.

Helps In Recovering From An Injury

As mentioned earlier, swimming in a pool is a low-impact form of exercise from a muscular point of view.  Doctors recommend backyard pools as a part of an injury recovery regime. To get back in shape you need to exercise.  With the support of the water, you can do it without over-exerting and aggravating the injury.  It will also strengthen muscle generally.

Perfect For Parties

Backyard pools can be an excellent venue. For grown-ups, they allow an outdoor space to enjoy good music, food, drinks and a place to cool off in summer. For kids’ parties where games are an absolute essential, they provide a great setting.  From the classics like Marco Polo, to Noodle Jousting and Octopus, all are a lot of fun and easy to monitor.

Enhances An Outdoor Space

When you move into a house, most of your time is spent thinking about the indoors. But the outdoor areas are in many ways just as important. A well-tended garden can make a house feel more like a home and increase its resale value. A pool and outdoor seating area can make it special too. When friends and family come to visit, you can be sure that they will appreciate the chance for a dip.

Each Pool Can Be Customized To Great Effect

It could never be said that when you’ve seen one pool, you’ve seen them all. What you do with your pool is up to you, but you can add a waterfalls,  put in a springboard or set up a hot tub and that’s just to start.  Even a waterslide is a possibility; however, unless you have a lot of disposable income you’re not going to challenge the theme parks.

Out Of The Pool Onto The Patio

Setting up a seated area on the patio is the perfect way to follow up a relaxing time in the pool. After you’ve had a bit of a workout and swum until you can swim no more – or if you feel like a change of scene – a few patio heaters will make a big difference. You’ve worked those muscles and now they deserve a rest. Get a towel wrapped around you and let the heat radiate and soothe any aches away.
As the temperatures drop and you’re still in your swimming costume, warming up by the pool is essential. Next to a heater on a comfortable patio chair, you can relax with a drink and carry on conversations begun in the pool. It’s worth checking sites like Hot Tub Advice to get a bit more information on what will suit you.

It’s An Incredible Way To De-stress

In the course of a day’s work, the stresses and strains can build up to the point where you feel like one big knot of frustration. Getting in a swimming pool and swimming or just floating for a bit can be a wonderful way of letting those stresses melt away. Think of it as being a big, gentle massage that encompasses your whole body. Can you think of anything more relaxing than that?

Strengthening Athletic Abilities

summer activities, summer family activities

A child can demonstrate a talent for swimming or diving in the swimming pool. Maybe they’ll be great at water polo or synchronized swimming.  In any case, the chance to practice at home is something that could make things much easier for them.

Any Day Can Be A Holiday

Your familiar with the idea of a “staycation.” You do all the things that you would do on holiday (try driving a few towns over for some sight-seeing). The kicker is that you don’t have the travel costs to worry about. So if you like to spend a holiday by the pool, now you can do it at home. Weather permitting of course!

It’s A Great Convincer For Playdates

Let’s be honest, you’ll see your kids more.  Inviting their friends over to swim and play is a great way to get to know other parents too.  You can use the time for adult interaction. Having your own pool is a pretty useful card to have in the deck.  Kids like swimming and it’s good for them – and it could be good for your kid’s social life too.

A Pool Ups Your Resale Value

Having a pool in your garden compared to not having one can up the resale value on your property by 5% or more. If your house is currently valued at $500,000, you could add another $25,000 on to that.  The more you add around it – pool house, gas grill, diving boards – the more the value can rise. You’ll be sorry to leave it, but you’ll have the funds to do it again!

Do You Hate Bedtime? Not Anymore!

Having a backyard pool means that your kids are getting exercise all summer long.  You may not realize the full benefit that this gives you until a couple of weeks into the summer. At some point, you realize that you haven’t had to shout at your kids to go to bed.  They have tired themselves out swimming all day.  A sound night’s sleep is good for them and for you.

The initial outlay of a backyard pool may seem excessive; however, the fourteen reasons above is worth it.

When it comes down to it how would you like to spend the sunny days of the year?  With a meal and a drink, and relaxing swim, and than looking over the sparkling water of your backyard pool sounds like a winner to me. You’ll never regret making the choice to get a swimming pool.

5 Ingenious Ways to Encourage Kids to Play Outside

There are many parents who would like to see their kids spend more time playing outside.  Modern children love their gadgets, but they must also  learn that the great outdoors is waiting to be discovered.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on encouraging kids to play outside.

Let Them Care for the Plants

Is there a chance that your little ones might be interested in caring for your plants?  Most children love to water plants, dig out weeds, and anything else to keep the plants healthy.

Many youngsters really enjoy looking after plants because it gives them a great feeling of responsibility. Why not try this out to see how much they enjoy doing it for a few days.

Eat Together Outside

Eating outside is something that most children enjoy doing when given a chance.  Put a lunch together, and eat at the picnic or patio table.  Can you imagine how much fun they would have.

By doing this you can introduce them to the pleasures of being outdoors. With a bit of luck they will then carry on playing out there once you have all finished eating.

Add Some Outdoor Toys

Possibly the simplest and most effective way of getting children to play outside is to add some outdoor toys in the garden for them. After all, they may simply not go outside because there is  nothing for them to do.

Some cool garden toys such as kids trampolines, balls, tennis nets and other exciting stuff will give them lots of new ways to have fun outside. You might even find  that some of the grownups in the family enjoy playing outside as well.

These toys will give them a terrific option when they have friends over or when you plan a birthday party for them at home.

Grow Vegetables

Another hobby that can get youngsters outside more often is growing vegetables. This is a wonderful activity that can bring the whole family benefits.  For example, healthier eating, lower shopping bills and the chance to live a more environmentally friendly way of life.

This is something that should be suggested rather than forcing them to do it. If they enjoy growing their vegetables then they will probably start to spend more time outside doing other things as well.

Get Some Pets

Some pets can also do a terrific job in getting the kids to stray outdoors more often. For example, a rabbit is the kind of pet that most youngster love to play with in the garden.

An alternative to getting your own pets could be to make your garden more bird or animal-friendly.   Encourage local wildlife to come and visit the property. The kids can then enjoy getting out to look for their little visitors.

There are many clever and practical ways of encouraging younger members of the family to put down their gadgets and head outside to play. Why not give a couple of these ideas a try and see how they work?

How To Host A Great Baby Shower

Thinking of hosting a baby shower for a relative or friend, but you don’t know where to start.  Today, I’m sharing tips on hosting a baby shower.  Furthermore, are you not sure of the proper etiquette on how to host the event?  Taking on the responsibility of hostess requires time, energy and creativity.  It can become stressful if you’re not organized or plan effectively.  So, we’re going to help you be a great baby shower hostess.  Be sure to check out our other parenting tips before you go.

baby shower ideas

I’ve hosted several baby showers over the years. Two for my daughter and several for family members.  I sure wish I had a few tips on how and when I should do various steps before I took on the responsibility. I put together a few tips for you on how to host a great baby shower. Here’s my tips:

Planning The Event:

  • A relative, co-worker or friend can host the shower. It’s considered improper for the parents to be to host their own shower.
  • Start planning the shower 2 – 3 months in advance. This should include selecting a location, theme, and your invitations. Your invitations should reflect the theme of the shower if possible. Your invitations will let guests know what to expect.
  • Send out invitations 6 – 8 weeks in advance. You should include the Hostess’ name, location, time and the guest of honor’s name. You can also ask your guests to RSVP.  Give an RSVP By Date and a Phone Number where they can call.
  • Plan activities for at least 2 hours. Most people prefer late afternoon or early evening showers.  It gives than an opportunity to do things at home or run a few errands before dedicating time for the shower.
  • About 4 – 6 weeks in advance of your shower select your party favors, colors, decorations, games etc. This is a good time frame, it will give you time to browse stores, google information and figure out other aspects of the event. Make a list of what you want to do and stick to it.
  • Decide on a menu about about 2 – 3 weeks before the shower. You can do finger foods, buffet or a sit down dinner. I love doing buffet style events.
  • Choose your center piece and decorations.  Diaper cakes are fun and practical gifts for mom.   (I made the Snoopy diaper cake above for a Snoopy Themed Shower).  This was one of my favorites.
  • Ask a friend or relative to assist with tracking the cards/gifts, food table, drinks and games. Turn the list of names and gifts over to the mom to be for thank you cards.
  • Capture the day in photos – Ask a friend who has great photography skills to take plenty of pictures of the mom to be, festivities and friends.
  • Select Door Prizes – Giving out door prizes is a great way to thank guests for participating

You planned and consulted with the mother to be about the menu, guest list and games if the shower isn’t a surprise and now the big day has finally arrived.  It’s time to take your place as the hostess of the event.

Hosting The Shower:

  • Greet all of your guests when they are arrive.
  • Next, once the shower gets under way, introduce the Mother to Be, and tell the guess how she is related to you or a funny story about her to break the ice.
  • Have each guest introduce themselves and state how they’re related or connected to the mother to be. This is a nice Ice Breaker and a fun way to make everyone comfortable.
  • Play the games that you have selected.  (Normally 2 – 3 are good).  Also, be sure to include a few door prizes throughout the event.
  • Serve your meal or appetizers and allow guests to mingle and chat for awhile.  Be sure guests are comfortable and have everything they need.
  • Have the mother to be open her gifts. You may also serve the cake during this time.
  • Have guests mingle, look at the gifts and take pictures with the mother to be.
  • Last, thank guests for coming and give out baby shower favors.

Fun Summer Activities for Kids:

Crafts and Coloring – First, I occupy the 6  year old with crayons and printables that I collect all year. My grandson loves to do printables too.

Paint Party  – Next, invite a few of their friends over.  Set-up a table outside in a shady spot and let them paint, color and draw until their heart is content.  Serve snacks and fun drinks.

Matinee Movies Matinees are a great summer activity with the kids. They’re much cheaper than evening shows.  Also, theaters in my area offer free movies once a week until the end of the summer.  Check out your local theater for freebies.

Family Fun Center – Next, add a water park to your list of summer activities for kids. You can also include arcade centers, paint ball fun and more.

We’ll spend a day at Shenandoah Caverns in Virginia – They have beautiful caverns, an area that houses props from Presidential Inaugurations, floats from Macy’s and the Rose Bowl parades, and an original 1957 Cafe that serves old time shakes, burgers and fries.  So, check out your local area for unique places to visit.

Day At The Park – Furthermore, I will be planning an old fashioned picnic.  Something most parents have lost sight off these days. I will be packing a picnic basket with sandwiches, drinks etc. and find a spot where we can just enjoy nature. The park also has swings, ducks, and paddle boats  Adding in a walk will be the perfect way to get exercise with the kids too. No grilling on this day.

Story Hour At the Library –  Just as important, I’m still partial to actual books and I’ve started a library for both of my grandchildren. I think it’s important that the kids be exposed to books and family friendly stories.  Our local library also offers activities, so I’ll have to see what’s on the calendar during their stay.

Baking Day – We’ll make funnel cake and bake cupcakes.  The kids love to cook.  I found a kit that has flower pots that we can bake the cupcakes in.  Delicious Blooming Cupcakes baked in a flower pot makes a yummy day.

Visit a Farmer’s Market – We’ll spend a few hours at a local farm picking berries to make homemade jam.  They love it on toast and biscuits.  Many also have farm animals, fields of flowers, hay rides and other activities.

Home Movie Day – We’ll spend the day watching movies from the home DVD collection and eating popcorn. I also have Infinity on Demand.  I can found shows or movies that we didn’t see at the theater.

Backyard Movie Night –  Purchase a King size white sheet and a movie projector.  Set up the backyard with strings of lights, chairs and snacks.  We purchased a movie screen from Amazon at a reasonable price.  We found that it saved us time from having to put together a screen each time we wanted to use it.  Additionally, we purchased a outdoor movie projector, which we absolutely love.  It’s easy to put up and take down.  It stores perfectly in my outdoor storage building.

Sprinkler Day –  I’ll invite a few friends or cousins over to spend the day running through the sprinkler.  The kids have a great time.  I purchased an outdoor dressing room, which is perfect for drying off and changing clothes before heading home or in the house.  I love it, it can be used for camping too.

Sleep Over – I’ll invite a few of their cousins over to spend the day running through the sprinklers and a sleep over.  I have issues with public pools and the things that happen in them.  They can’t add enough chlorine for me! I’m debating on whether or not I want to put a pool in my backyard.  Once I retire, we’ll be able to enjoy it during the summer.

Fishing  – We’ll spend the day fishing and throwing back the fish at one of the stocked ponds in the area.  Life jackets for this one.

Summer Reading List –  We’re all avid readers in my family, and this summer I will be adding to my grandson’s summer reading list.  I will be downloading a few books on his Kindle, but I also want him to enjoy handling a good old fashion book.

Nature Hike – Summer activities for kids should include a day with nature. Set up a day to go on a small nature hike.  Give each kid a backpack with water, snacks, a magnifying glass, and disposal camera. You can look for bugs, birds, and flowers.

Bird Watching – Add birding to your summer activities for kids. Buy inexpensive binoculars for the kids and find them a shady spot in the backyard where they can watch the birds from a feeding station. Let them fill up the feeders, and than wait for the birds to retrieve the treats.  This is an excellent way to have them engage with nature.

Volunteer to Read at the Nursing Home – Interacting with our elderly is so important.  Reading can be a great pass time for our senior, and a great way to knock out the books on your kids reading list.

Volunteer at the Local Boys and Girls Club – Many boys and girls clubs help under privileged children participate in sports and learn other skills to help them overcome any disadvantages.  It’s a great way to meet other children and enhance skills.

Camp In the Back Yard – If your children have never been camping, start in the backyard.  It’s a great way to bond with dad too.

Volunteer at Your Local YMCA – Volunteering at the YMCA is a great way to give back to the community, and help children learn new skills.  Additionally, they offer swimming lessons.  If you want to strengthen your child’s swimming skills, the YMCA is a great place.

Assist at a Local Food Bank –  Sorting and putting together boxes for those in need is fulfilling.  It gives kids a chance to see and appreciate what they have at home.

Horseback Lessons –  Last, many equestrian centers offer summer activities for kids.  Many offer riding lessons during the summer months.  Additionally, it’s a great way to learn about horses and their care.  So, be sure to check with private farms/ranches for activities too.

Finally, we hope that you find a few of our summer activities for kids inspirational.  Start planning with your kids, and get your kids off to a great summer. What activities do your children like to do or participate in during the summer?

17 Tips To Help Your Child Make Friends

Just like adults, every child has a desire to make friends. They want to be invited to parties, sleep-overs, and have playmates on the playground. It’s a natural instinct, but they may need a little help in reaching out to another child. Children develop friendships differently from adults, they must first learn social skills. These skills include learning how to communicate, solve problems, cooperate, and negotiate (share). Here are a few parenting tips to how to help your child make friends:

Create opportunities for your child to interact with other children:

  1. Set up play dates – First, have your child invite others over to play. Set up a play date with a few of their school mates and family members at your local Chuck E Cheese or other pizza place. The local arcade is a great meeting place. If there is a child who may not be able to afford the outing, pay it forward. Please let their parents know that you will be covering the bill.
  2. Have a party  – Have your child invite a few school mates over and serve your child’s favorite snacks. Encourage them to reach out to others who may be alone on the playground or in the  lunch room.
  3. Host sleep overs – Children love sleepovers. Have your child invite a few school mates over on a Friday or Saturday night. They can watch movies or listen to you tell stories.
  4. Have a cookie baking day –  Next, have your child invite a few friends over on a Saturday and bake cookies or cupcakes with them. If you have boys, grill hot dogs or order pizza.
  5. Involve your child in activities – Ballet, swim lessons or organized sports are the perfect place to meet other children, work as a team, and interact.
  6. Alternate with other parents driving the children to and from various activities – I was a carpool mom for years and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Show Support and Help Your Child Resolve Problems:

  1. Problems will arise with friends and family – Listen to your child when they talk. They will tell you what they’re thinking in their own way and words.
  2. Ask questions  – Also, help your child think about the problem and find a possible solution.
  3. Get to know the parent’s of your child’s friends – You can learn a lot about interacting with the adults. Get dad involved too.
  4. Let your child know that not everyone can or wants to be friends  – There’s nothing wrong with either person, sometimes people just don’t get along or their interests change over the years. Explain this to your child.

Be An Example for Your Child:

  1. Show your child how you interact with your friends – They will learn from you.
  2. Give your friends lots of compliments – This will boost your friend’s self-esteem, but also teach your child to give compliments to their friends.
  3. Laugh!  – Your child will learn to have a sense of humor.
  4. Hug – Your children will see you hugging your friends and know that it’s okay.
  5. Avoid arguments – Don’t argue with your friends in front of your children. If it’s unavoidable explain to your child that it’s okay to have a disagreement and work out your issues.
  6. Be social with your friends –  Let you child know that you’re going shopping with Kara or having dinner Donna.
  7. Show your child that friendships and relationships are two way streets – Both people must give and take in friendships and relationships.

I always felt out of place when I was growing up.  Coming from an alcoholic/dysfunctional home makes you feel alone.  I started to become comfortable being alone.  As a result,  I started writing, reading and drawing to occupy myself.  I would walk around by myself going nowhere really, just wandering.  I started coming out of my shell in Junior High and became more sociable through high school and beyond.  But, to this day I would rather be alone blogging, sipping coffee and watching old movies. The majority of my friendships were made during childhood. We are still my friends to this day.

My daughter was more outgoing. She attended parties, had sleep overs and went to social events regularly.  Roller skating, fishing with the neighborhood kids, and running track.  Furthermore, she danced for 12 years, was a high school cheerleader and attended sporting events of her cousins.  There were many opportunities to socialize during her youth.  However, she’s also comfortable being alone.  She loves to read, draw, listen to music and write in her diary. Friends that she made during her childhood are still friends to this day as well..

Last, these tips have been tried and are true. We are using the same techniques with my grandchildren.  So far, they’re working just fine. Lead the way and your children will follow.  Most importantly, they will develop meaningful friendships that will last a lifetime.

5 Fun Summer Activities For Your Kids

kids summer activities, summer activities

It’s about that time of the year again when the sun will shine brightly, the birds  will sing loudly, the flowers will be in full bloom.  Summer’s around the corner, and my little ones could not be happier. Also, everyone will flock to the beaches.  Along with the freedom to build sandcastles on the beaches and play long hours in the pool, they also have a long break to look forward to.
Next, the  problem’s mine.  I have to think of new ways to keep them occupied throughout the summer.  Otherwise, I’ll hear “we-are-so-bored” rants right on the third day of their vacation. Well, if your problem is similar to mine, I have a solution.  Here is a list of five summer activities that your kids are sure to enjoy:
Foil River Can’t take the little ones out boating? Fortunately you can help them build a river right in your backyard.  All you need is aluminum foil and a garden hose.  So, take a few sheets of aluminum foil and roll up the sides to make a U-shaped stretch of an artificial river.  Turn on the garden hose and let the water flow through the aluminum river. You can also build ice boats by freezing colored water in ice molds and topping it with toothpicks that can hold tiny flags. Sit back and watch the excitement unfold.  Your little ones are sure to have a blast with this activity.  Even after the ice boats have melted, your kids can sail paper boats in the artificial river.

Stamping Glory – Worried that your kids will create havoc stamping in your living room when bored?  With this fun activity, they can go stamping without you  having to worry about any damage. Spread out a wide sheet of white cloth in your yard.  Also, hand your kids some paints, cut potatoes and apples, along with sheets of bubble wrap, tied to their feet. Let your kids dip the potatoes, apples and their feet in the paint.  They can create  stamping impressions across the sheet. This is a great activity to help your little ones let loose and open a whole new world of fascinating pattern ideas. An interesting variation to this activity is to let your kids stamp within the outline print of their favorite cartoon characters. Doing this will improve their concentration skills and help them develop a neat hand at art.

Dress Up Parade – Who wants to watch fashion shows on TV when little fashionistas are sitting right in your house. Involve the entire neighborhood and their kids in a fun evening of dress up parade. Keep 2-3 themes for the evening and have the kids dress up in outfits according to the theme allotted to them. The evening is sure to be fun not just for the kids but for all you adults too. You can follow up the fashion parade by distributing delicious treats and gifts to all the teeny tiny models.

Outdoor Movie Screening – Movie nights are loved by all kids and adults alike. Here’s a way you can double the fun. Put up a projector and screen a movie out in your backyard. Take charge of the snack counter and make some delightful munchies for the kids to enjoy. You can involve other families in the movie carousel too!

Balloon Ping Pong – We all have those days when we just want to sit back and do nothing, but our kids don’t let us. I sail in the same  boat, and it’s during times like these that the balloon ping pong activity comes to my rescue. All you need is two paper plates, two ice cream sticks, and one balloon to prepare for this amazingly entertaining activity.  Next, stick the ice cream sticks on the paper plates to make the ping pong bats. Let+ your kids have fun bouncing the balloon to and fro. Ensure your kids play in a room free of any breakables so as to prevent damage.
Finally, Let your kids cherish some great moments with these amazing activities.  Also, which one of the 5 activities is your favorite? Let me know in the comments section below.  You may also like 4 Top Family Activities in Bali.

How To Find Mentors When Mom or Dad Is Absent

Are you a single parent  who needs to provide male or female influence for your son or daughter?   I’ve bee there, and I also know that parenting is a taxing role.  But one that can be rewarding too.  As single parents, we worry about everything because the majority of the time we do everything. Furthermore, having daily support from dad is rare.  So, we must become the back bone when it comes to raring our children.  However, finding resources is imperative.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on how to find mentors.
how to find mentors

My ex-husband was involved in my daughter’s life after we divorced, but it was on his terms.   His priorities were all wrong.  For example, the responsibility of getting my daughter up, providing clothing, feeding her, educating her, taking her to activities and turning her into a young lady was my responsibility.  For the most part, he thought if he handed over money he had done his part.  As a result, I ended up divorce and making it on my own.

Regardless of whether you have a son or daughter, they will need a male influence in their life.  You can and you must provide a strong male figure.  Speaking from a male perspective is something we as women simply can not do.  However I do have a  a few tips on how I accomplished that goal and provided male role models for my daughter.  Here’s a few tips on how to find mentors:

  • First, call a trusted family member.  A sister, brother, cousin aunt or uncle who has an established a home can make great mentors.  I’m sure their husband or wife would be willing to spend time talking to and teaching your child how to become a positive person in our society.
  • Next, contact your local Big Brother and Sister organization – They have volunteers who wish to spend time with local children.  Also, one of my male employees was a volunteer for a little girl.  As a matter of fact, he was a huge supporter for most of her life and is still involved now that she is an adult.
  • Also, church activities are great.  Preferably with someone who is trustworthy.  We hear so much about Catholic Priests and ministers who abuse children.  Take the necessary steps, and ensure your child is around those who can truly be trusted.  Predators choose churches because we as parents make the mistake of thinking that everyone is holy.
  • Furthermore, camps are also a good way for your child to learn about leadership from both a male and female perspective.  This can be a church camp, sports, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, or whatever organizations you can find locally.
  •  Fathers and grandfathers have great influence on their grandchildren.
  • Recreational centers are another way to provide role models and mentors for your child.
  • Last, if you have positive nieces or nephews, have them spend quality time with your son or daughter. They will share things with each other that most won’t talk about in front of their parents.  This will give your child an opportunity to hear things from a different perspective too.
In conclusion, don’t worry that your son will become a murder, rapist or bank robber because mom is not around. Don’t worry that your daughter may become promiscuous and bring home babies out of wedlock or marry the first man who comes along because dad was absent.  The world is filled with people who fit into these categories who were raised in 2 parent homes.  Most importantly, there are many people in the world who were raised by single parents, and they are successful.
You must talk to your child constantly, so they know what path to take and be honest.  Let them know that being a single parent is not a glamorous job, but in fact hard work and you want more for them.  Lead the way, they’re depending on you.  We hope that you found our tips on how to find mentors helpful.
