Heirloom Versus Hybrid Tomatoes

gardening

There’s nothing better than fresh, home grown tomatoes in the summer.  I grow both heirloom and hybrid varieties, but my preference is heirlooms shown above.  I prefer heirlooms because they have a larger selection, more flavorful and great for seed saving. I save the seed and use them to start new plants the next growing season.  Heirloom tomato seeds have been passed down from generation to generation and from gardener to gardener.  The plants produced are true to their parents, meaning what you produced last season will hold true for the current growing season.

It’s time to decide what tomatoes you want to grown on your patio or in your home garden, so check out my list, do your homework and choose a few varieties. Some tomatoes are great for slicing, salads, sauces and paste.

My favorite heirloom tomatoes are:

  • Paul Robeson
  • Brandywine – Pink, Red, Black
  • Cherokee Purple
  • Paul Robeson
  • German Johnson
  • Beefsteak
  • Black Krim
  • Hillbilly
  • Mortgage Lifter
  • Amish Paste – Meaty and great for sauce and salsa.
  • Boxcar Willie
  • Kellogg’s Breakfast
There are hundred of heirlooms, these are just a few that I grow each year. I try a new variety each season so my list will continue to grow.

My favorite hybrid tomatoes are:

  • Early Girl
  • Celebrity
  • Better Boy
  • Roma
  • Sweet 100 – My favorite in salads.
  • Delicious

Hybrids are a cross between two genetically different tomato varieties. If the seed is saved, the plant produced could be from one or the other parent. I personally don’t save hybrid seed. I like to now what I’m producing.

There are a few disadvantages to growing heirloom tomatoes. They must be heavily staked and/or caged.  The vines are vigorous and will grow wildly if not contained. They are also known to crack easy and they are tender. They are also not the prettiest in shape, but the colors are beautiful. It takes longer to produce fruit. You can see the difference with the heirloom versus the hybrid in the above picture with the Brandywine Pink variety. It is odd in shape and has cracked.

The disadvantages listed are why you don’t find them on grocery store shelves, but they are highly sought out by home gardeners. The taste can’t be beat.

10 Dollar Tree Bargains

bargain shopping, frugal shopping

I love the Dollar Tree. I can always find a bargain, but the best reason is that I save tons of money purchasing various items. Everything’s A Dollar! Here’s a list of some of my favorite Dollar Tree items:

party supplies, paper party supplies

1.  Party Items – I purchase the majority of my party items from the Dollar Store. This includes tablecloth, utensils, cups, napkins etc. They have a variety of colors and they usually increase their color selection during the holidays and graduation.

flash cards, school supplies

2.  Early Learning Supplies – These are great for helping with math homework.

3.  Craft Items – I can find ribbon, glue sticks, greenery, and flowers etc. for a lot less than         Michael’s or A.C. Moore.

4.  Glassware – I have found adorable glassware at the Dollar Tree. I love the color of these glasses. I snatched up 6. I’ve also purchased wine glasses that I love to fill with candy and give as gifts during the holidays or as a party favor. I also purchase vases for crafts and cylinders for candles.

5.  Gift Bags/Wrapping Paper – I purchase my gift bags and wrapping paper at the Dollar Tree. They have a large assortment and various size bags for birthdays, wedding and seasonal selections.

6.  Seasonal Items – Great place to purchase seasonal decorating items, stocking stuffers or party favors.

7.  Packing/Mailing Supplies – I mail packages to my grandchildren so I purchase box tape, bubble wrap and mailing envelopes here. Cheaper than the big box stores.
Disney coloring books, kids activities

8.  Books/Puzzles – Great place to buy coloring and activity books for the kids.  They also have books for bedtime stories, notebooks, pencils, markers etc.

9.  Snack Items  – I find good deals on pretzels, popcorn, trail mix, pudding, apple sauce cups and other snack items much cheaper than the grocery store.

10.  Storage Items – I purchase storage containers to house my craft, gardening items and the kid’s coloring books and crayons.  I love the containers that I can stack in my craft room or their room.

You can find name brand items at the Dollar Tree as well as off-brand depending on what you’re are looking for. Either way saving money is the name of the game, and that you will do.

SPONSOR OF THE MONTH

MOMS-2-e1406504042463
Andrea Keeney is a writer, blogger, mother, and wife. She is the creator of the blog, Parenting with Parents as well as the author of the book, Moms: As Elite as the C.I.A….Well Almost. When she isn’t pursuing her dreams of writing she is taking care of her three small children.
Attention! There is an elite group of women walking freely among the average citizens of the world. These freakishly instinctive beings are capable of physical, mental, and emotional acts of greatness. They tend to appear irritated, exhausted, and are almost always bombarded by very tiny renegades who are whining and/or yelling. These women come in many shapes and sizes, however they all respond to a single name: Mom. If you know one of these women, if you are one of these women, or if you are going to be one of these women, you need this book!

Kim chose 6 Sanity Saving Tips for Busy Moms from The Sunny Patch. “I am ALWAYS trying to find the “best” way to enable me to do it all – and usually failing miserably. Like Tonia says, sometimes there are things that you just need to let slide off the burner completely in order to take care of the items that are the most important. I absolutely love the analogy “eat the frog” because that’s one of my pitfalls – putting off those tasks that HAVE to be done in favor of doing something that I WANT to do (housework v. blogging). If I “eat the frog” and just get the nasty over with – then I have more time to spend on doing what I love to do. It’s a concept that I preach to my two boys on a daily basis, yet I have trouble doing it myself. This was my most favorite post this week and “Eat the Frog!” is now taped to my computer monitor as a reminder to get the yuck done and out the way so I can do the fun stuff!”

The Best and Worst Cereals

Are your kids bouncing off the walls after breakfast?  It could be that bowl of sugar that you placed in front of them this morning for breakfast.  My grandchildren like cold cereal, and it’s a great option when I don’t have time or feel like fixing pancakes or waffles. I decided to research the sugar grams in what I was feeding them, and I was quite surprised when I came across the best and worst cereal list.  I thought I would share it with you. You too may be surprised by the list, and may think twice about what you serve your children for breakfast.   Here’s the list:

                                          Best Cereals

      •  Mini Wheats
      •  Life
      • Rice Krispies
      • Wheaties
      • Kix
      • Corn Flakes
      • Cheerios
      • Shredded Wheat
      • Honey Nut Cheerios
      • Grape Nuts
      • Special K

                                                               Worst Cereals

      • Honey Smacks
      • Golden Crisp
      • Lucky Charms
      • Fruit Loops
      • Trix
      • Raisin Bran
      • Sugar Frosted Flakes
      • Apple Jacks
      • Crunch Berries

I love Honey Nut Cheerios and Raisin Bran.  I’m happy at least one of them made the Best Cereal List and that one just happens to be the cereal I give my grandchildren. The majority of the time I give my grandchildren oatmeal, especially during the cold, winter months or fix them pancakes or waffles with fruit. Occasionally, I do fix sausage links with eggs. Neither are fond of bacon.

Does yours or your child’s favorite cereal fall into the Best or Worst list? Is the list making you rethink your cereal choice? It will definitely be a reminder the next time I’m in the cereal aisle and considering buying something different.
