ISEE Tips That Will Help Students Ace the Test

If you have a children interested in going to a private institution of higher learning we have a few parenting tips on helping them ace the Independent School Entrance Examine (ISEE).  This is a great standard assessment of skills and knowledge.  Every student looking to go into a independent post-secondary education needs to take this test.  It is a single, fair, and standardized test that all students take.  It is a way for universities and colleges to judge who the best, top, and brightest applicants are.  With our ISEE tips, your child will ace the test.

So, one of the things you will need to begin with is the best ISEE prep test book.  A prep test book can help because it allows students to familiarize themselves with the content as well as the format of the ISEE test.   So, let’s go over them:

ISEE Tips

  1.  Know Each Section of the Test

As is the case with every test, including this ISEE test, there are going to be standard sections and topics.  It is recommended that your child become familiar with them.  There are 5 main sections that will appear on every ISEE test. These sections include verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, mathematics achievement, and the essay section.  We suggest that you child take sample tests so they are familiar with these particular sections, and what to expect from them.

Additionally, these sections always come in the same order as we have just listed.  Your child will need to score in the top 50th percentile to get into any school of their choice.  Elite schools often only accept students in the top 85th percentile.

  1. Answer All Questions

People who do not score well on the ISEE test, or even fail it, often make one big mistake.  Students think that if they don’t know the answer to a question, or are not totally sure of the answer, that they should just skip the question.  This is detrimental to the test score.

There are no deductions made for wrong answers. As a result, losing points shouldn’t be a concern.  However, if your child does not answer a question that they are unsure of,  they will not get points if their answer turns out to be correct. Simply put, encourage your child to throw a Hail Mary, rather than not answering the question at all.

ISEE Tips

  1. Be Prepared For Test Day

Another reason students do not fare well on the ISEE is a lack of preparation for test day. Yes, this includes many variables.  However, your child needs to be prepared for all of them.  One of the biggest ISEE tips is to start studying early.  But, not the day before.  Allow your child to take the day off  before the ISEE to let their brain rest.   Encourage your child to get a good night’s rest, so their brain will be in top condition the day of the test.

Additionally, wear a watch to help manage time, and bring enough writing utensils  in the event that one breaks or stops working. Also, leave your phone at home, eat a good breakfast, and wear comfy clothes.  You child will better prepared to ace the test if they are comfortable and rested.

  1. Practice, Practice, Practice

As we mentioned in the introduction, one of the absolute best ways to ensure that you ace your ISEE test is to practice. Yes, studying, reading, and being familiar with the test helps a lot. However, there is really nothing better than an ISEE prep test or multiple ones.  The more test preps you complete, the more familiar you will be with what is expected of you.  And, this counts for your allotted test time,  materials, and the format of the test as well. Get some practice books immediately!

  1. Time Management

Yet another big tip you need to adhere to in order to ensure success on your ISEE test is to engage in effective time management. There are too many test takers that will stress out over single questions, or a few of them.

This is bad because you will end up spending way too much time on one section of the ISEE test, while potentially neglecting others.  This could result in the last several pages of the test being unanswered due to a lack of time.  Know how much time you have for each section, and if you run out of time, move on to the next one.

  1. Read & Build Vocabulary

The last of our ISEE tips is to read as much as you can in the months leading up to the ISEE test. We are talking about high quality books, intellectual books, and any other kind of reading material that will both further your knowledge of the world and build your vocabulary. Simply put, the more vocabulary you know, and the more information you have in your arsenal, the better your chances of succeeding on the ISEE test.

Conclusion

So, we hope that you find the ISEE tips helpful.  Make no mistake about it, this test is not for the faint of heart. However, it will determine your child’s future.  So, you should do everything in your power to ensure they are adequately prepared for it!

Frugal Ways to Continue Your Education in Adulthood

Continuing Education Tips

You are a mom with young children, but you want to do more than just care for them.  So, you may be thinking of continuing education. However, you are concerned about the way the workplaces have changed.  Furthermore, you want to get new qualifications to help you get back into the workforce.  Attending a  college physically may be difficult with your family commitments.  As a result, let’s take a look at ways you can further your education without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Continuing Education Tips

Online Courses

Taking classes are a great way to earn qualifications. For instance, you want to obtain an online bachelors degree in business administration.  You would be able to study when the children are in bed or when they are at school.  Ideally, you can fit it in to suit your lifestyle, and work at your own pace.

Online courses are also cheaper than a physical college.  But, you will still have the same support from tutors with virtual meetings between you, them and other students.  Technology has made this possible.  And, there are not many colleges or universities that do offer the majority of their courses as an online option.

YouTube

YouTube can be really good for continuing your education.  Especially, for things like learning other languages or getting up to date with the technological advances.  You can brush up on your math, learn more about science or maybe watch some cake decorating videos.  You could start your own business decorating cakes for other people’s special occasions.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a great resource for learning more about any subject you can think of.  It is good for children as well as adults, and has tests that you have to complete to ensure you understood the lesson.

You work at your own pace and it is all completely free of charge. Khan Academy has had more than 300 million views, which must please Sal Khan who founded it.

Code Academy

If you would like to work in website development, graphic design or marketing, Code Academy could be the ideal resource for you.  Code Academy is a great way for people to learn more about coding languages such as HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Python, and Ruby. They use interactive lessons for the fundamentals.  It’s a brilliant way to get started with the basics.

There is no end of online resources that you can use to further your education while still being a mom to your children. Many of them are free, and even the ones that you do have to pay for are not overly expensive.

You may not feel you have the time, but you must make time.  You will be surprised what you can accomplish once you start with continuing education.

Cello 101: Ideal Cello Bows for Cellists

cello bows

When it comes to cellos, the bow plays an important role in the overall function of the instrument. Without using an appropriate one, it would be hard for cellists to achieve the sound they want.

So, in order to reach the full potential of your bowed stringed instrument do your research:

Choosing A Cello Bow

Apparently, choosing a cello bow involves testing various bows.  Search for the best bow so you can produce more quality music using your cello.  Take yourtime, and be diligent.

First, test the bow with your cello.  It will help determine if it produces the type of sounds you want.  Furthermore, it’s important to consider the following types of cello bows:

  • Wooden –  The most popular types of wood that are used in making bows are the Brazilwood and Pernambuco.  They differ in quality because the wood is taken from different parts of the tree.

The Brazilwood comes from the thinner part of the tree, therefore offering low quality material.  Pernambuco is heavier and more solid than Brazilwood.

  • Fiberglass –  Fiberglass is included as a cello bow.  However, it is not a great option. It is the cheapest option you will find on the market. Some buy this cello bow due to tight budget, however, the quality is not good.
  • Carbon Fiber –  The durability of carbon fiber make it an excellent material for cello bows. It can withstand  harsh weather conditions.  Furthermore, it is as strong as the wooden bows.

Compared to Pernambuco, you will get almost the same quality.  It is also an excellent choice for changing climates, and doesn’t affect the sound quality at all.

Remember, there’s nothing wrong about being picky when purchasing a cello bow. After all, quality is an essential factor in your life as a cellist. So go ahead. Be as meticulous as you can be when choosing the perfect bow.

Aside from budget, consider the amount of time you will need to test different bows. This will help you find the right one with the best quality at a reasonable price.

Tips to Help Kids Who Play Acoustic Guitars Be Successful

Today, I’m sharing parenting advice on kid friendly acoustic guitars. Whether you had a hand in motivating your child to pick up the acoustic guitar or not, the moment you child says he or she wants to play guitar, listen closely. If your child is seriousness, start looking for kid-friendly acoustic guitars.  Additionally, check out age-appropriate music lessons with teachers that specialize in teaching children.

acoustic guitars

Once your child starts their lessons, as a parent you need to offer support as well and encourage your child to keep learning and practicing.  Also, make sure your child is getting what they need to become a good guitar player.

Tips to help your child become a good acoustic guitar player:

Get a good acoustic guitar of the right size

Acoustic guitars that are smaller than full-sized models are great options for kids.  These guitars are easier for children to hold.  Furthermore, there are plenty of kid-sized guitars on the market.  For example, the Martin LX1 Little Martin, Taylor GS Mini and Epiphone Pro-1 to name a few. These acoustic guitars are all from trusted brands so you can be sure to have a reliable instrument for your child.

Hire a good teacher

When hiring a teacher, look for an instructor that can tailor lessons according to your child’s age, level of understanding and physical capacity. The teacher should also be someone your child likes.  If they don’t like their teacher, they could lose interest in playing the acoustic guitar.

So, once you find a teacher your child likes, make sure you touch base with them on a regular basis. You are now a team.  As a result, you must work together to help provide your child with the best music education.  Ask how you can help.

Set up a practice space and schedule

Designate a room in the house or corner of your child’s bedroom as their practice space.  Make sure it is free of clutter and other distractions. The space should be comfortable, have a straight-backed chair, a sheet music stand or table and ample lighting.

Sit down with your child and work on a practice schedule. Consider school and extracurricular activities, weekend  activities, chores, homework time etc.  When your child is part of the planning, they are more likely to stick to the practice schedule.

Set up a reward system

Rewards are great motivators and give children something to aim for. You can set up a reward system every time they ‘unlock’ an achievement.  Additionally, memorizing a set of three chords or knowing all the notes on the fretboard can be incentives for rewards.  Make the rewards  simple.  For example,  such as a cupcake for a chord, or something bigger, like a shirt of their favorite band when they are able to play a song without making an error.

The most powerful thing you can give children learning to play the acoustic guitar is encouragement. Show how proud you are of them when they attend their lessons, practice on schedule and do their best to become a better musician. If you keep giving them words of encouragement, they would be more motivated to keep going!

Angry Sam – Tales of a Bullied Kid (Kids Book Reviews)

bullying tips

School is back in session, and it will bring problems to parents around the world.  Parent will encounter kids not wanting to go to school, missing the school bus, forgetting their lunch, detention,  protesting homework, and being bullied.

When school starts, I start adding books to my kids book reviews list.  Furthermore, I suggest that you either add them to your kids suggested reading list or by-pass them.   I’m always on the look out for books that will help our children with esteem and other social issues.  Bullying affects children’s self-esteem and can lead to social issues.  I’m a huge advocate on the prevention of bullying because my daughter was bullied when she was in high school.   As a result, I try to give advice on how other mothers can handle and survive this painful experience.

I came across the book Angry Sam.  It’s a perfect book to help teach your child about being bullying, discuss the emotions that come with being bullied and finding a solution.

The book revolves around Samuel Woodhouse.  Sam is a second grader at Castlegrove Primary in London.  He is a  video guru and loved watching Kung Fu movies.  But, some of the older kids had different plans for Sam.  Audrey was the meanest girl in the school.  Her and her sidekicks Dean and Gordon were school bullies.  Sam dreaded going to school.  They kicked him, tore his clothes, threw food on him, and stole his games.

Next, Sam kept his torment a secret.  He didn’t tell his mom or dad.  He thought the bullies would eventually find someone else to pick on and life would be good at Castlegrove.  Sam continues to show up at school.  However, he’s losing control of his emotions.  He starts plotting revenge.    The continued abuse leaves him with no other option but to fight back.

Every parent should read this book, so they can gain insight on bullying.  Read it with young children. Furthermore, if they are a little older let them read the book alone.  Afterwards, ask questions and give them advice on how they can handle the mistreatment.

Most importantly, Sam kept his torment a secret from his parents and teachers.  Your child could be keeping their pain from you too.  However, let your child know they aren’t alone.  It’s okay for them to tell a teacher or you.  Be sure to add Angry Sam to your list.
