Letter A Activities – A is for Apple Activities

Warm weather has arrived, and gardeners will be planting fresh herbs, lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries and other fresh produce.  I love teaching my grandchildren about different  fruits and vegetables, and how they grow.  My grandchildren are as a different as night and day.  One loves fruits and vegetables, the other not so much.  So, we have to be creative in getting him to eat vegetables.  It’s important to be able to feed them healthy foods.  Growing them is just as important.  I believe that if we educate and involve children in preparing food, they’ll be more receptive to eating it.

I’ve developed a series of coloring sheets, writing challenges and other facts about various fruits and veggies.   Our first letter is A.  A is for Apple.  Coloring is fun, and very relaxing.  I admit that I enjoy coloring with my granddaughter.  Furthermore, we have this beautiful coloring sheet to start off our Fruits and Vegetables series.  You can download the coloring page here.

We’ve added a writing sheet so preschoolers and kindergarteners can practice their writing skills.  Additionally, we added a few facts about apples.  I suggest taking your  child to a farmer’s market and showing them the various types of apples. Hopefully, they will have samples.  There are 7,500 varieties of apples in the world.   April and May are great times to visit orchards when the trees are blooming.  You will find a wonderful display of pink and white blooms for miles.  We have a week-end of Apple Blossom celebrations in my area.   There’s 2 nights of parades, carnivals, food vendors, a circus and the list goes on.  This is a picture of one of the apples trees in bloom at one of our local farmer’s markets.  The blooms are transitioning from pink to white.

Additionally, a trip to a local orchard while the apples are being picked and placed in crates makes a nice lesson for the children too.  Most orchards have signs indicating what type of apples are planted in each area.

We have another activity, Lets Bake a Pie maze.  This activity requires the child to take the apple to the pie.  If they love apple pie, reward them with a slice when they’re successful.

We’ve also included the Top US Apples in the United States.  The goal is to unscramble the names.  An answer key is included.  Discuss characteristics of each apple variety.  Additionally,  we’ve included facts about U.S. apples.  The activities are great for homeschooling or additional educational activities at home.
