I have had the pleasure of doing two 1st birthday parties in the last two years! Basically what I have done, is make sure the grown-ups have food and conversation (because there will more then likely be more adults then children at a 1st b-day party.) Make sure your 1 year old has a cake to dig into all by himself. My 2 year old didn’t get messy but as you saw my youngest tore into his! The only other thing I suggest is to have some sort of activity for the kids that are there. At Riley’s 1st, I let them decorate white paper bags and then gave them goodies in the bags! On his 2nd, they painted sun catchers (real cheap at Wal-Mart) and for Cayden’s we had it at the pool so that was activity enough in itself! Just remember if you have it at a pool, you have to get in so your lil one enjoys it! Hope all my rambling helps instead of bores ya!
