Hosting a Winter BBQ Successfully

Today, I’m sharing outdoor living tips on hosting a winter BBQ.   Entertaining isn’t a summertime pursuit. If you’re a fair-weather gardener, you need to recognize the importance of using your space all-year-around. The main benefit of having a backyard is that you can structure it to enjoy winter too.  Once you do that, a BBQ is a piece of cake!

hosting a winter BBQ

Of course, the trick is to choose the right set up so that you don’t have to move indoors when the weather turns and the mercury drops. If you don’t know where to begin, the following tips are excellent starting points. Continue reading to learn more.

Hosting a Winter BBQ:

Landscaping

A green lawn and colorful flowers might look pretty, but they’re not great when it comes to soaking up water. If anything, they absorb too much, making the ground squelchy and muddy, two features that are bad for winter barbecues. The right landscaping design can ensure the base for your barbie and eating and seating arrangements are solid and secure. After all, a bit of rain won’t affect stone flagging too much, as long as the material is high-quality. There’s no reason to swap all the soft elements for harder materials; just the places where you plan to grill and socialize.

An Outdoor Heater

Wrapping up only helps so much. When you reach the point where the cold is in your bones, you must either find a way to heat up or go inside. Who wants to go inside!  As a result, an outdoor heat is ideal for winter BBQs. Not only are they powerful, giving off a ton of warmth, but they’re designed with gardens in mind. As a result, you can pick a heater fixture that complements the style of your property’s exterior.

hosting a winter BBQ

Use Sturdy Dishes and Containers

Unfortunately, an outdoor area isn’t going to stop the wind from blowing, even if the setup is sheltered.  Don’t let Mother Nature ruin your BBQ by not protecting your food and drinks from the wind.  Thankfully, plastic storage containers and ceramic dishes are study enough to withstand the elements without taking away from the social element.  Additionally, plastic containers are easy to pass around. Plus, they are cheap and reusable.

hosting a winter BBQ

Create a Simple Menu

Although grilling is the ideal avenue to show off your skills, it’s also challenging in the wrong conditions. However, it’s not impossible if you stick to the basics and do them well.  For example, burgers, sausages, and kebabs on a stick are tasty and will go please most guests.  Furthermore, they cook cook quickly. Therefore, if the wind is too strong or the rain too heavy, you should still be able to provide these delicious food. Attempting to pull off a complicated menu in winter only increases the number of obstacles, which means the odds of failing are higher!

So hosting a winter BBQ is the perfect way to add excitement to those long, cold nights.  So, why not mix-up your routine and get rid of those winter blues!

Simple Garden Wow Factor Tips

Today, I’m sharing gardening advice on simple garden wow factor tips.  Our gardens have become more important than ever as we battle the Covid-19 crisis. A worldwide pandemic wasn’t anything that anyone expected. Just a few short months ago, you were probably planning your summer vacation.  Or, looking forward to getting a new car or upgrading your kitchen.  However, these plans have now had to be placed on hold as the world enters uncertain economic times.

garden wow factor

With lockdowns being enforced, our gardens have become the only outdoor spaces that we have had to enjoy. They have allowed us to reconnect with nature.  Furthermore, they soothe us and allow us to relinquish our anxieties. Our gardens have had a positive impact on our mental health during these unprecedented times. Being one with nature  lowers our blood pressure and can help our bodies release our happy hormone, dopamine. Mix this a little Vitamin D  and we can feel healthier, more alert, and less stressed.

Every garden needs to be maintained, even during a pandemic.  So, why not head out to the garden, get some Vitamin D and get your happy hormones dancing.  Unfortunately, purse strings have tighten as a result of the pandemic.  But, you can still achieve and maintain a beautiful garden.

Garden Wow Factor Tips:

Water Feature

If you adore water, implementing a water feature could be perfect. Many people yearn to hear the sound of trickling water.  Personally, I find it soothing and relaxing. The large orb fountains are very on-trend, but can be costly. Instead, consider installing a pond into your back garden. With a pond liner, some hard graft to dig a hole, and a hose to fill up your pond space with water, you can create a habitat for wildlife. Place some water lilies into your pond and some algae to help oxygenate.  And, you can create a healthy home for toads, frogs, and insects. You could install some underwater solar lights to help give your water feature the wow factor in the evening. Install a central fountain that you can pick up cheaply from a DIY store and enjoy listening to the sound of soothing water in your garden.

Borders

If you have borders that have seen better days, it’s time to clear the jungle of weeds and take it back to the bare soil. Till the area to break up the soil and add oxygen. Mix in some organic compost to give it nutrients before planting.  Think about what you want to plant in your borders. You have a blank canvas now.  If you are keen on creating a colorful landscape, think about the sorts of hues you want. For purple and blues, opt for a some bluebells, some deep purple dahlias, and some classic hydrangeas. These different floral patterns and bright colors will give your borders the wow factor for sure.

If you are after a more sculptural display of fauna, think about some exotic palms. These are ideal if you have a south facing back garden and enjoy plenty of sun throughout the day. They relish the heat and light that full sun brings. Also, there’s nothing better than laying some shingle or gravel and putting in the windswept bonsais, cacti, and the hardy winter leafy plants. These need very little maintenance and can survive through droughts.

Furthermore, think about your watering regime. Many people create watering channels for their garden, with one of the many water tank pumps available to power their irrigation. You are much better watering your garden every two or three days and giving them a good drink of water rather than a little drink every twenty four hours.

Vegetables

Another one of my garden wow factor tips is to grew fresh vegetables. Set aside a specific section of your garden for vegetables and crops.  This way your flowers and other plants won’t have to compete for the same nutrients. Raised vegetable beds are ideal and very cheap to create. Use any wood that you have lying around to create a frame of any shape. The only requirement is that you can fill this frame with about eight inches of compost. This way, any seeds you sow will have enough space to put down some strong roots.

Make sure your your vegetable bed is level on your soil or patio. Fill your raised bed with good soil and compost. Sow your seeds  according to the instructions on your seed packets. Keep it simple to begin with.  Especially, if you’ve never grown vegetables before. Potatoes are super easy to grow and the results are almost instant. The same goes for carrots and pak choi. This is also a great way to get the kids involved and away from their computer screens and tablets. As your simple vegetable plots begin to produce, you can begin to experiment with more exotic fruits and vegetables.

Dining

If you really want to give your garden the wow factor, consider making your patio the ideal space for dining. With the sunlight hours reaching their peak, there is nothing nicer than eating a family meal outdoors. Your kids will love spending some quality time together as a family and enjoying some good food outside. Clear your patio of weeds and consider installing an awning that attaches to your house.  It can provide shelter from the sun or rain. No matter how fierce the elements are, you can remain cool and dry.

If the nights are getting a little chilly, think about installing a fire pit or chimnea. These are a lot of fun as well as heat-producing models on the market. Rather than shivering the evening away under a blanket, you can keep warm next to a patio heater. Fire pits are also great to toast marshmallows and have a very rustic style barbecue.

Your garden has become an added living space to your home, so it is time that you start treating it with some respect. Implement a few of these garden wow factor tips.  You can be enjoying a beautiful garden space without breaking the bank too.

How to Create Tropical Container Gardens

Today, I’m sharing gardening tips on how to create tropical container gardens.  You can transform your  balcony, patio, garden or backyard into an exotic getaway.  Using simple planters or containers and a variety of tropical plants can create an exciting new look. Dramatic annuals and decorative planters provide rich foliage and astonishing blooms.  Furthermore, outdoor spaces can be transformed with little money and uses the trend toward container gardening.  Lets get started with your transformation.

How to Create Tropical Container Gardens:

The Environment

  • When people think of the tropics, their first thoughts are generally sun-kissed beaches with palm trees.  But, that’s not the whole story. Most tropical plants come from the floor of the rainforest.  They get little sun and have high levels of humidity. So, they don’t need as much sun as a cacti. And, tropical plants can live comfortably on balconies or shady backyards.  As a matter of fact, tropical plants prefer indirect sunlight.
  • Because tropical plants need high humidity, they require lots of watering. So, when using decorative planters they need to have good drainage. Choose planters with plenty of drainage holes to ensure the roots of the plants are free from standing water.
  • There is one element tropical plants need less than other plants to help them grow, and that’s phosphorus. Look for fertilizers described as NPK on the label. These types have nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as the primary nutrients. Iron and magnesium will help sustain the bright colors of the tropical flowers.  Plant food is recommended as well as adding Epsom salts to the soil at planting.  This will give your plants a magnesium boost.
  • Because the soil in planters and containers is above ground, it’s more exposed to heat and drying winds.  As a result, it loses moisture more readily. This is especially true in a warm weather.  So, tropical containers need to be monitored closely.  It’s imperative that the humidity level around tropical plants not fall too low. Also, the soil should be moist but not soggy.  Overwatering can cause rot and disease if the roots are allowed to stand in water for a long time. The soil in decorative planters should never be allowed to thoroughly dry out.  If so, the sides will shrink. This gap means any water will pour through the container and not reach the roots.  If this happens, push any soil that has shrunk from the edge around the pot to fill in the gaps before watering. One option to reduce evaporation, and maintain the humidity around the plant is to cover the surface with decorative mulch such as orchid bark.

Selecting a Planter or Container

With such a large variety of planters and containers to choose from, where do you start?  Many gardens use the traditional terracotta clay pots.  However, there are advantages and disadvantages for the tropical gardener.  Terracotta pots are heavier than plastic or fiberglass pots and are easily chipped or broken.  Most are more expensive too.

The style of the planter used for tropical container gardens are really a personal choice and the effect you want your tropical garden to project. The size of the containers will be limited by the space available, which will, in turn influence the size and plants  they can accommodate.

Always try and buy brand new planters for tropical plants.  Used pots may have been infected by disease or have chemical residues. If you do want to re-use planters make sure they are washed well.  Wooden containers need to be lined with plastic, so the water and soil don’t cause them to rot.

If you don’t want your planter to become a water logged, make sure there are plenty of drainage holes in the bottom. Without these holes, the organic compost will become saturated with stagnant water and kill off your tropical plants.

Designing with Plants

Wherever you’re putting your tropical plants, you need to make the design look harmonious with the surroundings.  You want to create an atmosphere you’ll be happy with. Think about what outdoor live plant displays you want the eye to focus on.  Also, think about how the other plants flow around that the center plant. Each planter needs to have a balance of plants.  You want the eye to go to the planter’s focal point. This can be accomplished with asymmetrical or symmetrical designs.

The form of the planter is dictated by the growth habit of the plants you put in it. Some plants like to grow tall, others like to hug the ground, and others want to flow over the edge of a planter. Each can be used to create an overall aesthetic for your tropical container gardens. And then there is texture, as the different types of foliage will give a different feel to a container. Broad leaves juxtaposed with linear leaves like grasses break up the eye line and bring a variation to your design. The best designs work on a variety of textures to add variance to the display. By repeat planting of the same plant in containers a rhythm is achieved. When looking at the planters admirers eyes can move from one planter to the other.

And, the final consideration when designing planters is proportion. There needs to be a balance of heights as well as plants. Garden designers have a rule that plants should not be higher than three times the height of the containers. For large and tall planters, medium to large plants with large leaves work well.  And, for short and shallow planters smaller plants with small leaves and excellent coverage.

tropical container garden

Shape, Texture, and Color

To get tropical container gardens or a garden planter to have a real exotic feel, you need to have plenty of tropical foliage. Most foliage will be green; however, you can break up the green with flowering annuals. There are lots of varieties that work well in planters such as, Vinca, Bacopa, Torenia, Verbena, Lantana, and Wax Begonia to name a few.

You can also break up the green foliage by using Caladium cultivars.  They are available in a range of foliage shapes, sizes and colors. You can choose foliage colors that compliment the flowers or contrast. Think also about the texture of the foliage as some tropical plants have shiny leaves they can draw the eye easier to the highlighted plant in the container.

Designing a Planter

The central plant in tropical container gardens should fill the crown of the planter with compact upright growth. The filler plants are more compact and are there to round out the top of the planter. Allow corner plants to grow over the edges, and allow their growth in more than one direction. Plants place at the side of the container can soften the look, and fill out the space between the corners. When thinking about the plants you’ll put in each individual planter, pick those that have similar watering, feeding, and light requirements.  It’s important that they all thrive in the chosen location.

tropical container gardens

Planter Location

We’re dealing with tropical plants, water retention is a prime consideration. Don’t put your tropical plants anywhere in your garden that is windy. The wind increases evaporation water evaporation. If you have a spot that gets anything from four to twelve hours of sun a day, you can use plants that like full sun or part shade. If the location gets only two to four hours of sun a day then you need to select plants that will accept whole or part shade. A lot of tropical plants can survive with varied light and will grow in the shade.  However, this often means they will have reduced flowering.

Fertilizer

Tropical plants are pretty much like any other and like to get regular feeds a slow-release fertilizer in the soil and water with liquid fertilizer. Add a slow-release fertilizer at planting.  Be sure to mix it thoroughly with the soil.

Maintenance

Like all gardens, tropical planters need to be maintained. It’s not just a matter of planting and forgetting. In the early stages to promote leaf growth, the plants will benefit from pinching, that’s the removal of young shoots. As the plant begins to grow, gentle trimming may be needed later in the season. As part of your watering regime, spraying with insecticidal soap or oil will keep pests and disease in check. Oh, and don’t forget the weeding!

Understanding Gardening Basics For Beginners

Today, I’m sharing gardening tips on understanding gardening basics.  Your vegetable and flower gardens should be just as cozy and relaxing as your indoor space.  Sometimes a little know how, flower pots, a can of paint and a little creativity is all that is needed to bring your garden to life.

Understanding Gardening Basics for Beginners:

Look at your weaknesses

If you want to maximize your space, you’ve got to put in the effort. So, even if you don’t have the time to look after a garden space, that doesn’t mean that you should let it go.  The best place to start is with the grass. Restart this by layering, which involves smothering the grass.  This this is a common method used when people want to start a garden. Killing the grass that remains by layering or polarization, gives you that blank canvas in which to start again. Take note, this can result in a lot of hard work.  But, you can always hire a professional to do this for you. But if you want to do-it-yourself, you’re off to a good start as a gardener.

Preventing the enemies from rising up

Weeds constantly sprout up.  However, if you want to ensure that your gardening area looks pristine use landscape fabrics.  It’s a synthetic textile that can be placed on planting areas to block weeds from coming up. This works by blocking the sunlight, which is the way weeds germinate. You can speak to a landscaping company to help you with the selection of fabric and installation.  Or, you can purchase the material yourself.  The fabric is porous, but you can cut holes into it so your plants can be placed and the water can drain into the ground.

Understanding garden soil

It’s important that you have a basic understanding of backyard gardening so you can properly maintain your garden. The soil is the foundation of your garden.  So, the numerous problems that affect soil can result in various issues with your plants. Soil can suffer from three common issues:

  • The soil pH: If your soil is too alkaline or too acidic, plants won’t thrive. Be sure that you test the soil so you know the garden’s pH level and you can make the necessary alterations.
  • The type of soil: The composition of the soil and its texture can cause problems with drainage. If the soil contains too much clay, this will stop the water draining properly.  Sandy soil won’t retain water.  It drains through before the plants can absorb it.
  • Nutritional issues: This is something that can be remedied with a soil test. Because, much like us, we need specific nutrients, the soil requires specific resources in which to grow plants and vegetables. A soil test will let you know of any deficiencies before you start planting.  Fix any problems before you continue your garden.  Remember, the soil is the foundation.

Using the right spots for the right plants

A garden is a blank canvas, but you have to be aware of certain limitations. While you may want certain plants in the garden, you’ve got to be aware of the specific limitations for each planet.  Plants need to be in the right conditions in order to thrive.  First, find out what your planting zone is.  For example, I live and garden in zone 6B.  Furthermore, you also need to know how much sun and shade you get in your garden area.  Choose the type of plants that will survive in your garden area.

Once you understand the basics, you can turn your garden into an area that suits your lifestyle. You can turn your battered, bruised, and weather worn garden space into a space that will thrive.  A garden is a lovely thing, but if we want it to flourish we have to be aware of it’s limitations and yours.  Having an understanding of gardening basics, doing a little planning and putting in some effort will have your garden area a beautiful space that you desire and deserve.

Creating a Child Safe Garden for Your Family

creating a child safe garden

Summertime is near, and that’s the perfect time of year for quality family time and making some memories.  Quality time is good regardless of whether you’re planning to go away on vacation or just hanging out enjoying in your own back yard. The lighter evenings and warmer temperatures are perfect for play activities with your little ones.  Naturally, you want to keep them safe from any harm. Toddlers are into everything by nature.  However, we want them to have fun exploring, not end up in tears. So if you’re experiencing summer with an active toddler, here are a few things to check when creating a child safe garden:

Pad Out Patio Sets

Outdoor furniture is designed to be durable and robust.  But, not always with a child safety as a primary concern. Some garden furniture can be made of metal.  As a result, check any rusted edges that you will need to remove. Additionally,  if you have a wooden set make sure that it doesn’t require sanding and sealing again.  Sanding and sealing will prevent little fingers from getting splinters.  Check out sofa sets for patios that featured padded cushioning, soft edges and no protruding bars to help keep your children safe.

Cover Metal Fixtures

Uncovered metal fixtures such as taps, hoses, etc. can heat to sizzling temperatures.  So, make sure you keep them covered to stop little hands from getting burnt.  Hoses can moved to shady corners.  If there are taps sticking out from the wall, consider padding it temporarily.  A wad of cotton and some rubber bands should do the trick. And if you do have any external power outlets, invest in plastic socket covers.  They will stop young children from poking stuff into the outlet.

Check the Planting Scheme

Sometimes those pretty flowers and shrubs you admired before children can turn into a hazard.  Especially, when you have toddlers who like to put interesting things in their mouth!  Some plants can be poisonous when ingested by small children or animals.  So, you should have a pre-emptive sweep of the garden and get rid of any offenders.

It’s worth knowing that kids don’t necessarily have to eat the leaves or flowers on shrubs.  Just touching them and then putting their fingers in their mouths can cause illness.  Plants to look out for are Giant Hogweed, often found along riverbanks and paths can  cause skin blistering and even blindness.  Also, Bluebells, Chili Peppers, Lily-of-the-Valley, Foxgloves which contain Digitoxins, Poinsettia, Hyacinths, Iris and Ivy can be harmful.  Always make sure your child washes their hands thoroughly after a playing in the garden.

Secure Play Structures

Many of us like to add play equipment for kids to enjoy in our gardens.  This includes climbing frames, slides, swings and sandpits.  These items need careful attention to ensure they are safe.  Furthermore, make sure the structure is placed on completely level ground.  This will ensure that the equipment is stable and won’t fall over. Bumpy grass or natural inclines in the ground can cause equipment to shift over time.  So, it’s best to place them on a sold surface if possible.  Unfortunately, there may be changes to the ground over time.  So, check the equipment periodically as part of your normal garden maintenance.

When shopping for playsets, make sure that you purchase equipment that has accredited child safety standards.  As a result, you know they are constructed with quality material and with safety as a primary concern.  Most importantly, only let your child play on equipment that is appropriate for their age.  If you need to pad things temporarily, cheap foam pool noodles can be cut to size.  Simply, slit in the pool noodle in the middle to grip onto edges and bars.

Reconsider Gravel

Although gravel is attractive and low-maintenance, it can also hurt toddlers who are prone to falling over.  If you do have large patches of gravel, consider replacing it with turf.  Grass provides a much softer landing for little knees and hands.  Plus its kinder for the environment.  If you don’t want the hassle of mowing, look into artificial grass substitutes.  Artificial grass has come a long way.  Now it looks more lifelike than ever.  Also, it stops family pets from digging up real grass.

Be Careful of Water Features

It goes without saying that even small water features are a hazard.  Children can drown in a couple of inches of water.  Furthermore, if you live near an open water course install a strong fence with a childproof lock to keep them away from the water unsupervised.  It’s not just drowning risks you need to consider either, standing or stagnant water can be a magnet for bacteria and insects.  Bacteria and insects can be harmful to children.

If you have a family pool, its better to have a locked, fenced area around it.  Make sure children know that they should never enter without an adult. Even small inflatable paddling pools require kids to be supervised.  You should empty them completely after each use.

Store Equipment and Tools Safely

Gardens can contain tools, equipment, and chemicals that can be  dangerous if not stored securely.  Make sure you’re able to store everything securely.  When you’re barbecuing, never let children play unattended when the grill is hot.  Make sure the kids are supervised while you’re cooking.  If you use a gas grill, propane tanks must be locked away in an area where kids can’t reach them.  Make sure you store utensils, coals, and lighter fluid.  Also, lawn mowers, electrical yard tools, and sharp implements must also be stored securely as well.

Make an outdoor dining area

The one thing that enjoyed most is dining outside.  So, if you find yourself stuck with what to do with your garden or patio area consider a dining area.  Keep things simple, but invest in a new dining table and chairs.  Also, add an umbrella to shade you from direct sunlight.  Furthermore, invest in a cover to keep the furniture in good condition too.  Especially, during the winter.  If you don’t feel like you have a large enough space for a table and chairs, consider extending your patio area.  A decked level would also work.  You can add details like wooden shades and planters to make an impact.

Take the cooking outside

Dining outside is great, but why not think about doing the cooking outside as well.  Again, you can keep things really simple and invest in a BBQ.  Some BBQs are full on outdoor stoves where you can cook a full meal or grill.  If you’re brave enough when the weather becomes chili, you can still enjoy your outdoor stove.

However, a BBQ can just be the start of your outdoor kitchen.  Home owners love the idea of creating an outdoor cooking area.  Some have included a pizza oven, a fire pit to keep warm and even an outdoor sink.  These are some amazing examples of outdoor kitchens that could tempt you into investing in one so that you can create a great outdoor living space too.

Add a fun element to your outdoor living

Who says that a yard is just for sitting, reading or sipping on a beverage.  Although there is clearly nothing wrong with this, adding fun elements to your outside space could really bring it to life.  A portable hot tub can make a big difference. You may be thinking that a hot tub is a little extravagant, but there are some health benefits to having one.  For example, hot tubs help relieve anxiety and stress as well as improve your sleep.  Another idea is to create a children’s play area.  You can separate parts of your yard to ensure that you have adult space as well as a great place for your children to enjoy.  You could add a treehouse, a slide or swings.  While you’re relaxing on your deck, the children can enjoy their space.

Socialize more in your garden

Socializing can often be seen as something you do inside your home.  After all, that’s why a majority of people invest in an open kitchen and dining areas.  Or, they invest in a plush kitchen. However, socializing can now be extended to your outside area.  Consider having additional seating and LED lighting installed.  Adding the seating and lighting around a fire pit makes the area inviting.  Additionally, when the temperature drops a fire pit could help you extend the use of the seating area too.

While it can be quite tempting to dismiss your garden during the winter months, keeping it tidy is recommended.  Stay on top of the flower beds and your lawn.  Having a tidy space is also inviting, so invest in outdoor storage to keep lawn care items out of sight.

I hope that some of these suggestions have offered you some inspiration on how to create a great outdoor living space.
