Choosing the right hotel is essential if you want a successful, safe, fun and stress-free family trip. The hotel that you choose should have large rooms just in case you need to add extra beds or cribs.  Furthermore, it should cater to families with facilities and restaurants serving a range of food.  You might also want to find somewhere close to the attractions that you would like to see during your visit.  You don’t want to spend time doing too much walking or on public transport with tired and grumpy kids.

 

Prepare for Your Journey

If you can, a road trip might be ideal.  For example, it’s more comfortable for the kids, you can stop whenever you along the way, and you’ll have access to your own vehicle for the duration of your trip.

Whether you are flying, driving or taking the train, make sure you pack everything that you need.  This includes snacks, drinks, and plenty to keep your kids entertained for the journey.

There is absolutely loads to do in New York.  Some of it is suitable for children and young families, and some isn’t. Visit at the Right Time

If you are traveling with children, it’s always a good idea to avoid visiting at the busiest times when there is likely to be long queues and crowded streets. You might also want to avoid high summer when the weather can be very hot, and prices inflated. Visiting between January and March, or September and November can be wise.

New York is quite easy to navigate. It is built in logical blocks, making it easy to walk around and find your way. But, it’s also absolutely massive. So, if you don’t want to spend time lost and confused, study maps before you leave to help you to get your bearings.

How to Navigate New York City Like a Local

How to navigate New York City: 

 


Walk Properly

If you are traveling in a large group, walk independently instead of walking side by side. Furthermore, don’t hold hands.  The easiest way to incur the wrath of the locals is to walk side by side while holding hands.  If you want to get along with everyone, walk single file and keep moving.   Additionally, if you need to stop, get off the sidewalk.  It’s important to keep the flow of traffic moving.

 

Riding Bikes

If you have decided to rent a bike, obey all traffic laws to avoid getting into any trouble. Moreover, you should keep off the sidewalk because it is meant for pedestrians. Make sure that you ride on the paved streets.  Furthermore,  do not run any red lights. You should also remember that pedestrians have right of way.

Use the Subway Carefully

If you want to use the subway to get to your destination, you should have your card out and ready for swiping.  Don’t block the turnstile searching for your card.  If you start rummaging through your purse at the last minute, you will definitely irritate many people.

Once you’re on the subway be considerate of others.  Avoid sprawling out over too much space. No matter how tired you feel, you should not sit on the steps while waiting for the train because they are dirty.

 

Navigate the Grates Carefully

In Manhattan, there are many grates on the ground.  As a result, you should avoid them if you are wearing heels. On the other hand, if your shoes are flat you can walk on the grates.  Leave ground that is not grated for people with small dogs or those in heels.  Remember, if you displace the grates, you or others can fall ten feet down.  So, use caution to avoid injuries.

Use Phone Maps

If you are not sure of your destination, you can use a phone map.  They can help you figure out where you are in relation to your destination.  However,  you should not shy away from asking New York City residents because they are friendly people.

 

Don’t Use the Cell Phone When Walking

Even if you are looking at maps to figure out where you are going, burying your head in your phone is a bad idea.  You could end up falling into holes or bumping into people.  To avoid this,  you should stop if you want to look at a map or just ask for directions.

 

Watch the Umbrella

If you are carrying an umbrella, you should lift it up when you pass people.  This will help avoid crashing into them. Moreover, you do not want to injure someone and ruin a good day.

 

New York City is a Gawking City

The city is filled with attractions, performers, and celebrities. If you are not careful, you might not reach your destination on time.  As a result, make sure that you pay attention to your surroundings.  Most importantly, you want to avoid blocking the flow of foot traffic. If you have to stop, get off the sidewalk or stand flush with the buildings.

Bird Watching

First, explore 37-acres of winding trails, streams, rocks and hills known as the Ramble.  It’s a densely wooded, world-famous birding spot that covers from 72nd St. to 79th St.  Furthermore, Central Park is a well known migratory route and one of the best birding spots in the U.S.  It attracts birders from all over the world.  Some 250 species can be spotted here in any year.  Simply incredible.

Did you know that nearly one million visitors a year hike through these 40-acre woodlands?  The setting will make you feel like you’re in the Adirondacks.  In addition to the woodlands, you can enjoy the serenity of The Pool.  It is lined with cypress, weeping willows, and red maples, an idyllic setting for photographs.  This popular destination is the perfect place for spotting wildlife by streams.  Furthermore, you may find wildlife feasting on one of three cascades along rustic trails that will inspire and calm your senses.

Today, I’m sharing travel tips on sites from TV shows in New York City.  New York City has been the backdrop for many popular TV shows and movies.  In fact, you may have grown-up watching some tv shows featuring sites in New York City.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

First, you must have seen how 5 of the main characters of this popular TV show, and how they spent so much of their spare time at a bar. That bar was real. The real NYC pub or bar – MacLaren’s – is at 240 W. 55th Street.  Furthermore, some menu items have been renamed after scenes from the show.

 

GOSSIP GIRL

So, the popular TV series “Gossip Girl” used many real-life New York City sites, which you can visit to feel the magic once again.  Do you recall how the characters in the series, including Serena, Blair and friends had lunch on the steps of the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art?  To see where Serena lived with her family, visit the Palace Hotel.  And, to see Chuck Bass’ home, you can visit the Empire Hotel.

Remember Café Grumpy’s from the hit HBO show, Girls? This coffee spot is for real with locations throughout New York City.  The locations include Greenpoint, Chelsea and the Lower East Side.  You can see people hang out, read and get their morning cup of caffeine at this popular coffee shop in the city.

Next, Mad Men was shot at the Oyster Bar in New York City.  The Oyster Bar seafood restaurant has been located on the lower level of the Grand Central Terminal since 1931.  It has been quite popular among locals as well as visitors. If you were a fan of the TV series, “Mad Men”, you must have seen how Don Draper sabotaged his boss at the bar.

 

Sex and the City

When the Magnolia Bakery made its way in the TV series, Sex and the City, its popularity has reached a new level. The bakery in Greenwich Village still sells delicious cupcakes for visitors.  Furthermore, did you notice how Carrie and Miranda spend a lot of time here sitting and chatting about many things?

 

Seinfeld

Last, in the popular sitcom, “Seinfeld,” you must have seen Monk’s Café which served as a hangout spot for Elaine, Jerry, Kramer and George. The café was actually fictional using the real exterior of Tom’s Restaurant in the Upper West Side.  Locals have favored this restaurant since 1940.  Visit and recreate the magic of this popular TV show all over again.
