Keeping Your Kids Healthy During the Holidays

The holidays are here, and with them a variety of health concerns: the cold, the flu, and the holiday fat.  Today, I’m sharing parenting advice on keeping your kids healthy during holidays.  The holiday season can be amazing.  But, between the flu bug and the holiday overeating our best intentions for health and fitness can awry.

Here are 5 tips to keeping your kids healthy:

1). Make Sure They See the Doctor

First, are your kids current on their pediatrician visits?  Your pediatrician can evaluate their overall health and identify any pressing issues as well as keep them current on their vaccinations,

According to Families First Pediatrics in South Jordan, UT, it’s a good idea to bring your children in around the beginning of holiday season.  Vaccinations are an important concern.  Especially with the flu and other nasty bugs going around.  But, there may be other issues you may want to address head-on so you can have a good holiday season.

So, be sure to ask about any health concerns you may have.  Furthermore, their vitamin levels.  Are they getting enough Vitamin D and/or Vitamin E?  Discuss this concern with your doctor.

2). Let Them Have Sick Days

It’s likely that you’ll have to deal with some runny noses, coughs, and sniffles during the holiday season.  As a result, it’s a good idea to allow your children to have a sick day or two now.   Push them to go to school could end up with them missing more days and exposing other children in their classes.

3). Keep Everyone Moving

It can be very easy to let physical activity fall by the wayside during the holidays. After all, everyone’s busy celebrating and eating lots of delicious food.  Furthermore, there’s a good chance it’s a lot colder outside and the days are shorter. Admittedly, winter may present you with some of your biggest tests, but there are a few tried and true ways to getting your kids physically active and healthy.

For example, walk as much as possible.  A brisk walk in the cold can be refreshing.  Walking a few blocks with the family after dinner can be a good source of exercise and a chance to burn calories.  When you return, cozy up to the fire and play a game. Also, try to find opportunities to be physically active indoors.  Yoga, which requires very little room or special equipment,  can be done by practically anyone. This includes kids as well as adults.

No parent condones running inside, but sled riding or building a snowman can be fun if you have snow in your area.  A day at the roller skating or ice skating rink can be fun too. If it’s not too cold riding bikes around the neighborhood can be fun.

4). Hand Hygiene

Hand hygiene is also important not only during the holidays, but throughout the year. It’s flu season, and colds are common as well.  Make sure your kids adhere to frequent hand-washing after using the restroom, before meals, and after blowing their noses.  A simple bar of soap should suffice for all hand-washing needs.

5). Look for Healthy Food Alternatives

You’re likely to get a lot of resistance to healthier meal planning for the holidays.  So, “Hey guys, we’re going to try some healthier versions of all our favorite holiday foods!” is likely to get you push back.  Unfortunately, for many kids and many adults, when they hear “healthier” they think it means “terrible and icky”.

Instead, make brownies using black beans instead of flour or cookies made with bananas instead of butter.  Serve them to your children without explanation of what’s in them. Let them enjoy these treats without realizing they’re eating something different.

Conclusion

Being healthy for the holidays can help everyone enjoy them.  From careful hand hygiene to paying attention to what you eat, these 5 tips should help you get the most out of your holiday season.

11 Ways to Recycle Christmas Cards

Today I’m sharing parenting tips on ways to recycle Christmas cards.  Year after year we receive beautiful Christmas cards, but we have no idea what to do with them after the holidays.  They’re too beautiful to throw away, so we just place them in a box and store them from year to year.  Christmas is around the corner.  Again, Christmas cards will be arriving in the mail or handed out at the office. Many have beautiful scenery or a picture of Santa.

Here’s a list of way to reuse them:

Name Tags –  First, use designs on the card for gift name tags.  Cut out a square from the design on the Christmas card.  Next, Embellish it with To and From lines.

Embellish Gifts Bags – Second, cut out design and embellish gifts wrapped in Kraft or plain colored wrapping paper.

Frame Them – Furthermore, you can frame the cards and make a vignette or wall display.  Pick up a few frames at your local Dollar Store.

Design a Wreath – Recycle Christmas cards by making craft items.  Christmas Cards make great wreaths.

Embellish a Fireplace Mantel – So, your mantel is bare.  Display cards along your fire place mantel or shelves.  Add lights or greenery to the mantel to create a festive mood.

Decorate a Door Frame –  Furthermore, when I was growing up, sending Christmas cards to family and friends was a tradition.  One of my favorite childhood memories was seeing the Christmas cards received during the holiday season around the door frames in the house.

Create Jigsaw Puzzles – Also, recycle Christmas cards by creating jigsaw puzzles. I purchased this jigsaw puzzle maker for my scrapbook pages and I love it.

Christmas Ornaments –  Use a circle punch to create designs from the cards.  Next, use a hole punch to make a hole at the top of the circle.   Thread a piece of ribbon through the hole and tie on a tree or tree branches.

Turkey and ham are great, but every year you yearn for something different.  However, every year you succumb to tradition.  It’s not that you don’t enjoy having the family around the table.  Who doesn’t love feasting on turkey, roasted potatoes, rich red wine gravy and bejeweled Christmas pudding.  But, you’re constantly thinking how it might be nice to mix it up once in a while.  There are plenty of ways in which you can still enjoy an alternative menu on Christmas Day.  Most importantly, you’ll be making new edible traditions for the family in the process.

First, you need to decide what sort of alternative cuisine you would enjoy.  Also, if there are any dietary requirements in your family make sure they are accounted for.  There’s no point serving chestnuts roasted with paprika and chili if your grandma is allergic to nuts. Take your time and explore all your options.

Think Outside The Box

You may wish to forgo your oven and explore an entirely different method of cooking Christmas dinner this season.  Furthermore, you might like the idea of getting a smoker like the one available at BillyOh Barbecues.  You can cure and smoke your own salmon and herring.  Furthermore, it will save you a trip to the grocery store for a side of Gravlax or Hot Smoked Rainbow Trout.  You could take the barbeque theme even further, throw a few Ribeyes and Chops on the grill.  By embracing  different Christmas cuisines like a festive barbecue, you’ll ensure dinner on Christmas Day will be one to remember.

Themes

You may want to encapsulate a theme for your Christmas party.  Perhaps a Hawaiian themed party or a festive winter theme.  You can include a buffet or ‘bring a dish’ style dinner party.  Whatever theme you choose, you will want the food to be delicious.  So, choose wisely and embrace your ideas wholeheartedly.  Additionally, give your family plenty of notice.  They’ll enjoy experiencing something new over the holidays, and will love that you are hosting the party.

Your Experience

Perhaps it is the environment that needs to be a little different this year.  You could take a trip and volunteer for Christmas.  If travel is not an option, volunteer with a local charity.  An alternative to hosting Christmas dinner at home is to dish out a traditional dinner at the local homeless shelter.  You could also welcome a lonely senior into your home for Christmas lunch. You may find that doing a good deed on December 25th is all you need to feel like you’re making a difference.  By giving back to the local community over the holidays, you’ll be the epitome of showing goodwill to all men.

So, Christmas is a time of celebration, giving thanks and enjoying quality time with family and friends.  There’s no better way to share in the joy of the holiday season than whipping up Christmas dinner or treats in the kitchen for those around you to enjoy.
