Coach Motives Kids In Cemetary – WTH?

Parents of a JV football team in a New York town are livid.  Why?  They lost a game, and the coach thought a good motivator would be to take the team to a cemetary on the way home.  Lesson to be learned?  I have no idea.  His explanation was that Denzel Washington used the cemetary to motivate his football team in the movie Remember the Titans and he tried to adopt the idea.

Dah!  What happened to having a conversation with the children?  I really worry about our children and the education system in this country tonight.   Some educators don’t seem to think and some don’t seem to care.  The coach instructed the driver to pull over and demanded that the 24 players lay down between 2 rows of graves.  The lesson that he was trying to teach the children supposely was about the importance of playing hard.  How he connected a cemetary to that idea is beyond me.  Play hard or die?

Can you image the horror those kids must have been feeling.  He told the parents, “My only thought was to bring them to a realization of what a great thing it is to be able to play football with your friends, and how great it would be to work hard and triumph the following Saturday.”

The coach was suspended 2 weeks.  He did offer his resignation; however, the school board refused to accept it.  Apparently he is a good teacher and is well liked.  The school board thought he just made a poor decision.

I hope none of the children suffer any negative repercussions as a result of this ploy.   If your child had been involved would you have demanded his resignation?

Would You Purchase This Kitchen Set For Your Son?

Would you purchase a kitchen set for your son?  My now 4 year old grandson has been asking for a kitchen set for months.  We just celebrated his birthday and purchased this adorable kitchen set for him.  He loves it, but his other set of grandparents believe kitchen sets are for girls.  The picture clearly shows a little boy on the box playing with the set, so it obviously isn’t just for little girls.

Please tell me why people still think this way.  Some of the best chefs in the world are men.  My grandson loves to cook.  As you can see, he’s been at it since he was 2 years old.  He’s making a spinach dip for his mommy in the picture below, who loved his creation.

This is Xavier whipping up brownies with grandma several months ago.  He had a great time making them and a better time eating them.  My father was a better cook than my mother when I was growing up.  Have you heard of Bobby Flay and Emeril?  Do you watch the food channel?  Ninety percent of the challengers on Iron Chef are men.  The Cake Boss is a man.  I’m just saying, lol.

It’s so sad that we have people in the world who still think this way.  What frightens me is what they’re teaching him when he spends time with them.  My daughter spoke up, and make it clear that she will not have her son taught 50’s views and values.  Whether he wants to be a chef or fly jets will be up to him.  If he turns out to be gay, so be it.  He will be loved just the sameI was so proud of her.   It’s this kind of narrow minded thinking that generates prejudice in the world.

We purchased this set at Toy R Us and it is the bomb.  It is made by Lifestyle Legacy.  A little pricey, but well worth the price.  The colors are fun and features a sink, swivel faucet, 2 burners with clicking knobs and a cutting board.  It even has a cell phone for take out orders or chatting with grandma while fixing dinner, lol.  It also includes an oven, microwave, refrigerator with water dispenser, coffee pot, storage bins, dishes, shakers, pots and pan and the list goes on.  It has everything a little chef needs to cook a great meal including a pot holder, and it will provide opportunity for him to use his imagination.  Isn’t that an important part of development for a child regardless of whether they are boy or girl?  We even received a free 85-piece food set with the purchase.  It was the perfect gift for him.

We see this set providing hours of entertainment for his little friends who are visiting with mommy and daddy, and we’re sure Zarriah will love using it when she gets older too.  It’s a breeze to clean, and assembled quickly.  Don’t forget the batteries.  The clicking of the burners is a big part of the cooking process.   If you’re in the market, you should add this kitchen set to your list of toys to check out.  You little one would be thrilled if Santa puts one of these babies on his sled.  I highly recommend it.

Teaching a Preemie How to Nurse From a Bottle

I wanted to let my readers know that my little Zarriah is up to 4 lbs.  2 ozs.  Quite a milestone for us.  My daughter is attempting to bottle feed her for the first time in this picture.  She needs to learn how to suck and keep her milk down.  This is a task that she would have learned during the last month in the womb.  Once she masters this task, we will be well on our way to gaining that last pound needed to go home.

In addition to learning to nurse from the bottle, she also needs to maintain her body temperature outside the incubator, pass the car seat test and maintain a steady heart rate.  So we still have a few milestones to accomplish.

The first attempt at bottle feeding was a little overwhelming for her.  We’re hoping she will relate to sucking her pacifier, which she loves, and she will get the hang of things quickly.  The hospital she’s in, is ranked as one of the best in the country for nursing preemies.  They’ve actually had a speech therapist working with my daughter and Zarriah to help with the sucking processing.  Is that not amazing?  You wonder how they can teach a baby this small to do anything, but they can.

We’re thrilled that Zarriah is allowed to wear her own onesies and tees now, but I’m having a time finding preemie clothes.  If you know a site or store where we can find cute onesies for her, please let me know.  If you have experience with a preemie, I would love to hear from you.  Please leave me a comment.

Meet My New Granddaughter

Meet my new granddaughter Zarriah pronounced Zar-re-ah.  Her due date was early November, but she decided to make an early appearance on August 28, 2011.  Zarriah arrived at 31 weeks, and has caused Mawmaw to lose quite a bit of sleep the past few weeks.  She weighed 2 lbs. 10 oz., but thankfully she is gaining weight gradually and is doing well.

I was preparing to host my daughter’s baby shower the week-end she arrived.  It was the strangest week.  We had experienced an earthquake, which is quite unusual in my part of the world.  The earthquake was followed a week later with Hurricane Irene.  Needless to say, I’ve nicknamed her Storm.  The past 2 weeks have been filled with fear, joy, exhaustion, hope, prayer and the list goes on.  We’re now focused on getting her nursery together and Zarriah gaining weight.  She’s past the 3 lb. mark now, so hopefully it won’t be long before we have her safe at home.

I love the concept of Kangarooing the Baby.  It was a new concept for me, my daughter weighted 7 lbs. 13 ozs. when she was born, so premature babies was an area that I was totally unfamiliar with.  I still haven’t been able to hold my granddaughter, my daughter and SIL are the only 2 people are allowed to handle her besides the nursing staff, but I’m there for support.  For those who are unfamiliar as well, it is a concept where the baby is placed on mommy or daddy’s bare chest and their head turned so they can hear the parent’s heart beat.  It also allows for easy nursing and allows the baby to fall into a deep sleep so they conserve energy.

I think this concept has really helped with Zarriah.  She wasn’t receptive to anyone holding or touching her at birth, but now she loves for mommy to hold and sing to her.  I must say that my SIL is doing a great job kangarooing as well.  The first time that I saw him remove his shirt and hold her it was hilarious.  More fathers should be involved, he is the only man that I’ve seen holding their baby in the NICU nursery since we’ve been there.

We’re working on the nursery now.  We think it’s important to have a bright, cheery environment to bring Zarriah home to.  Our initial plan was to paint the nursery yellow with teddy bears.  We now decided on a Beautiful Butterfly theme.  We’re doing lavender walls with teal, pink and purple butterflies.  I’m going to stencil the words “Beautiful Butterfly” around the room.  We purchased the crib and changing table and decided to use the rocker we used in Xavier’s nursery.  Stay tuned for the post on the nursery.

We Have A New Baby On The Way

I’m so excited, I have to share my news with you.  We have a new baby on the way!  My daughter is expecting, and Mama will be shopping up a storm over the next months preparing for the new arrival.  The due date is 11/11/11, how cool is that.  My daughter has decided that she doesn’t want to know the sex of the baby this time around.  We’ll be decorating and purchasing everything in neutral colors, yellows, greens, beige etc.

Grow Your Own Veggies

I decided to plant a vegetable garden this year.  I have fond memories of my grandparent’s garden when I was growing up, and I remembered the taste of a tomato straight from the garden.  There’s nothing like it.  I want Xavier to experience his summer’s in Mama’s garden and enjoying the taste of fresh veggies and fruit.  He loves apples, pineapples, and strawberries.  I’ll be planting an apple tree next year and a strawberry patch in the fall so we can have fresh strawberries next spring and summer.

This year I planted tons of tomatoes for canning and salsa, green beans, peppers, eggplant, squash and zucchini.  He’s not fond of veggies yet, but I’m adding a little to my sauces so I can sneak some in.  I’m also looking for recipes that I think he may like without there being a hint of veggies.  So far Zucchini Bread without the walnuts, don’t trust him eating those yet, is at the top of the list.  He loves spaghetti, so I’m finely chopping and I do mean finely chopping peppers and onions to add, lol.  He saw a carrot in some sauce once, and it ended his entire meal.

Planting your own garden is also a great way to save on the grocery bill, and there’s no pesticides used.   It’s also a great family activity.  Xavier is picking hot banana peppers for Mama’s hot pepper ring mix.   He loves a hot banana pepper, cauliflower and jalapeno mix that I purchase from the store.  I’m going to can a few quarts for his enjoyment.

After picking the peppers, Xavier watered the garden for Mama.  He now understands the importance of sunshine and water to a garden.  I didn’t leave out weeding either, lol.  We’re going to put a little patch for him next year to include strawberries, raspberries and colorful carrots.  Check out his gardening boots.  He loved them so much, he took them home with him to wear when he waters his mother’s flowers.  Aren’t they adorable, I’ll be doing review on the boots in another post.

Because I acquired poor eating habits growing up, I want to teach my grandson the importance of eating fresh veggies and fruit.  What better way than to walk into your back yard and pluck them off the vine.  I must saw that Michelle Obama’s Get Moving program and White House garden inspired me to plant mine.  What an excellent idea to get children involved in an outside activity, and one that is so important to their health.  We need to get them off the computer and sofa and back outside to get some physical activity and fresh air.  I’m grateful that Xavier would rather be outside than in the house.  He runs an entire acre catching fire flies, making mud pies and cakes, swinging from trees.    Do you have a garden?  What outside activities are your children involved in?  Leave us a comment, we may want to try it.

Mallards Visiting My Backyard

Mallards

I stepped out on my deck this morning to sip a cup of coffee and found these little guys taking a swim in my creek.  Aren’t they adorable.  One of the pleasures of living in the country, you never know what you will find in your backyard.  Happy Wednesday everybody.

Mariah Carey’s Nursery

I had to share this celebrity nursery.  It’s a picture of Mariah Carey’s nursery for her soon to be twins.  Is it not adorable!  I would have never thought to use this shade of green in a nursery, but it makes the cream pop.  Mariah and Nick are expecting a boy and girl.  I love how she incorporated neutral colors instead of the usual pink and blue that we’re so stuck on.  The small touches of pink and blue are just enough.  Just in case you can’t see it, there are touches of blue in a vase and stuffed animal on the far right.  Most of us wouldn’t be able to duplicate this nursery; however, their may be certain ideas that could be used in the homes of us ordinary folks.

I love the off white furniture.  Furniture in this tone could be reused if a family decides to have additional children.  If it turns into a toddler bed, that even makes it better.   For more information on Mariah’s nursery, pick up a copy of Life & Style magazaine.
