How to Become a Flea Market Shopping Pro

flea market shoppingSummer is here, and it’s the perfect time to head to the flea market.  I love finding bargains or negotiating a good deal.  Flea markets are popular on the week-ends in most cities or towns.  There are indoor markets that are open during the week as well. Check your local listing for hours.

In addition to flea markets, there are farmer’s markets.  Farmer’s markets have a heavy emphasis on fresh produce and organic items.  However, there are other flea markets that focus on everything from tools to antiques. No matter where you live, city or country, there’s a flea market nearby.

Here’s a few tips to help you successfully score a haul on your next trip:

  1. Arrive Early – In my experience, you find the best deals when your arrive early.  Quality items are items are still available, and ready for a new home.  You can also find deals in the afternoon.  Many dealers don’t want to pack up their wares, so they are willing to lower prices.
  2. Wear Comfortable Clothing and Shoes  – In the summer, lightweight clothes is a must.  Walking shoes are suggested rather than flip flops.  However, if your feet and legs can withstand those cute flip flops go for it.  I would dress in layers during cooler weather.  You can always take off a jacket or sweater or put one on.
  3. Bring Water and Snacks – It’s important to stay hydrated during hot, summer months.  Most flea markets will have vendors, but if you want to save a few buck bring a tote and pack a few bottles of water
  4. Take Cash – Money talks.  Vendors would prefer cash rather than running a credit card.
  5. Make Quick Decision on Purchases – Delaying making a purchase could cost you that item that you have your eye on.  If you’re connecting with an it, take it home.
  6. Make Sure You Can Haul Your Goods – Make a list of items that you would like to obtain, and determine if you will need a truck to haul your goods. With most vendors, you are immediately responsible for your purchases once the transaction is made.  Some vendors will deliver for an additional fee.
  7. Don’t Be Afraid of Items That Need Repairs – If you see a piece of furniture that has good bones, but has scratches, dings, weak legs or needs the seat replaced, don’t run.  These items can be repaired.
  8. Don’t Be Afraid to Negotiate – Most vendors are willing to lower their prices if your offer is within reason.
  9. Check out Vendors Who Are Packing Up
  10. Try to Bundle Items – If you find several items that you want to purchase from the same vendor ask if they will give you both items for a particular price.  Most will be willing to give a great deal to move several pieces.

So, put on a pair of comfortable shoes and get ready to grab some great deals at your local flea market.  You may also like Auction Tips for Beginners.

Airport Tips for Parents Traveling With Children

Today, I’m sharing airport tips when you’re traveling with children.  Some of us will be traveling by car to our destinations, and some of us will be heading to the airport with children in toll.  As we all know, traveling can be stressful.  However, traveling with children raises stress to a new level.

Summer is here! We’re all looking forward to a nice long vacation.  But, we’re wondering how to get through the airport with children and keep your sanity?  We have other travel tips for parents that will make you a professional traveler in no time:

airport tips for parents

Check out our airport tips:

  1. Discuss expectations with the kids – First, let the kids know that they are expected to follow directions, and they are to stay with a family member at all times.  Once you get to the airport, discuss airport and plane instructions as well.
  2. Arrive early – Second, you will need plenty of time to check bags and get through security  Furthermore, you will need time to get drinks and snacks if you didn’t bring them.  Allow your children time to relax with an electronics game or book.  They may also want to checkout the planes on the tarmac etc.
  3. Take Advantage of Designated Lines – Next, you should know that not all airports have designated lines.  So, check with the airport to determine if their is pre-boarding for small children.
  4. Know the Procedures for Children  – Children 12 and under are allowed to keep their shoes, jackets on etc. on while going through security.  Furthermore, they will not be separated from their parents.  If you have an infant, you must remove them the carrier and carry them onto the detector with you.
  5. Children 13 and older must follow adult procedures – Children 13 and older must follow the same procedures as adults.
  6. All backpacks and carry on bags must be screened –  This includes your child’s.  So, make sure you are not carrying liquids or other items prohibited by TSA.  Allow yourself enough time to get beverages once you get through airport security.
  7. Pull Ups will come in handy  – If you have a child 6 or younger, use them.  It’s better than having an accident in the airport or on the seat of the plane.  Having to change out of wet underpants is a task you don’t need.
  8. Carry a change of clothes for the kids – Having a change of clothing with you for small children is a good thing.
  9. Wear slip on shoes and socks – Wearing shoes that you can easily take off and put on will help alleviate your struggle to get through the airport.  Remember belts, jewelry and other items can cause the detector to go off.  Put some thought into your dress for departure and your return.
  10. Pack carefully – You will have to get bags through security and through the airport.  Lugging heavy bags can be stressful, but also physically dangerous when trying to keep up with kids.
  11. Purchase ID Bracelets – Place an ID bracelet on your children.  Furthermore, give them instructions on what they should do if they get separated.  First, they should immediately found another mom or someone wearing a uniform.  Second, tell an airport employee.  Let them know that the airport employees will have them paged.  Last, they can show their ID Bracelet for assistance.
  12. Take advantage of early boarding – Airlines will allow travelers with children to board early.  This is one of the most crucial airport tips for parents that we have.
  13. Be patience –  Additionally, another one of most recommended airport tips for parents is patience.  You will need it.
  14. Baggage Claim – Furthermore, you must remain vigilant in getting your children through the airport.  Your last stop will be baggage claim.  A rest room break would be good at this time too.  If you have two adults traveling, I would suggest one stay with the children and the other retrieve the bags off the carousal.   Furthermore, a  few bucks for a skycap or cart will be money well spent.
  15. TSA Pre-check Clearance – A pre-check clearance allows you to by-pass removing your shoes or taking out electronics.  As a result, you can focus on the children and take them through the detector with you.  To fully maximize your pre-clearance, apply for your clearance before you make your airline reservations.  Additionally, you can enter your clearance number into the system when you make your airline reservations.

Last, allowing sufficient time to get through the airport is essential.  Furthermore, becoming upset and grumpy will make the trip unpleasant for everyone.  Most importantly, children will be excited at one point and frightened at others.  So, it is your responsibility to get them through both.

Finally, we hope you found our airport tips for parents useful.  You may also like: 13 Tips for Parents Traveling with Children

How To Install Bathroom Sink Faucets

bathroom faucets

Give your bathroom a fresh new look with one of our Maykke bathroom sink faucets.  You can install new bathroom sink faucets in an afternoon. Whether you’re upgrading your bathtub faucet or doing a complete remodel, Maykke offers a wide array of bathroom faucets.  Furthermore, you will also find other bathroom fixtures to upgrade your bathroom.

Tools and Materials Needed:

Bucket
Basin Wrench
Adjustable Wrench
Putty Knife
Silicone Plumber’s Caulk
Rags

First, bathroom taps and bathroom faucets come in several shapes, styles, and designs including bronze faucets or brushed nickel faucets. Sinks will have either one, two, or three holes to accommodate your faucet.  The holes will either be widespread or center set. Take note of your sink design before purchasing your new faucet. If your bathtub faucet is brushed nickel, you should either replace the bathtub faucet to match your new bathroom faucets or purchase a brushed nickel faucet for your sink.

Getting Started

Next, place a rag and bucket below the plumbing of your sink to catch any drainage that may occur.

Remove the Old Faucet

Turn the water supply to your bathroom faucet, usually located under the sink.  Additionally, turn on both your hot and cold water to relieve the water pressure.  Also, wait until the water stops flowing.  Than unscrew the supply lines from the water valve by hand or with a basin wrench. Unscrew the lift rod from the base of the sink, then unscrew and remove the nuts securing the faucet to the sink. Lift the old faucet from the sink.  Remove any silicone caulk used to secure your old sink with a putty knife.  Finally, thoroughly clean the area underneath your old faucet.

Remove the Drain

Place your bucket underneath the P-trap on your drain and unscrew the slip nut on the P-T rap. Unscrew and remove the drain flange from the tailpipe connected to your sink and set it aside. Push the tailpipe up to remove the old drain and clean the area underneath the old drain.

Install the New Faucet

Finally, follow the manufacturer’s specific instructions for the new installation of your bathroom sink faucets. Most bathroom sink faucet installations start with installing the faucet gasket to the faucet and placing the faucet through the mounting holes. Use plumber’s chalk to secure the faucet to the sink. Insert the new drain into the sink’s drain hole and secure it to the new drainpipe included with your faucet. Install the new drain rod and reconnect the supply lines to your sink and water supply. Turn on the water supply and turn on the hot and cold water, tighten any leaky or loose connections as you see them.

How to Clean a Cement Bird Bath

Today, I’m sharing backyard birding tips on how to clean a cement bird bath.  First, I love auctions.  Especially, auctions when I’m able to get items that I’m bidding on at bargain prices. I grabbed this cement birdbath for $10.00. Fortunately, nobody else saw the beauty in it or the potential for a repurpose. To put the icing on the cake, the auctioneer threw a birdhouse in for free.

Unfortunately, the bird bath had a few fractures.  But, the base and the top were in pretty good shape overall.  The birdbath had sat in a beautiful knockout rose garden for many years.  The owners were moving to Florida, and were limiting their haul to their new home. They were happy that I was a birdwatcher, and the birdbath would be restored and loved.

how to clean a birdbath

Next, my first step was to clean up the bird bath.  However, I hadn’t decided if I would try to fix the fractures in the birdbath or repurpose it as a planter.  The birdhouse needed the roof repaired, and a paint job, but overall it was in  good shape too.  So, I decided to start with cleaning the bird bath and leave the birdhouse for later.

cleaning cement bird baths

As you can see the bird bath hadn’t been cleaned in some time.  And, it really needed a little TLC to repair the cracks.  A good cleaning was the first step to bringing it back to life.  It was going to need some elbow grease to remove the grime that had built up over the years.  But, it was a task that was manageable.  I just needed to set aside an afternoon to deal with it.  I picked a beautiful, sunny day and went to work.

How to Clean a Cement Bird Bath:

  • Water
  • Clorox Bleach
  • 33 Gallon Garbage Bag
  • Steel Wool Pad
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Cleaning Brush

1.  First, I filled the birdbath with water and added a good dose of Clorox Bleach.   Don’t be frugal, give it a big, huge dose.

2.  Next, I covered the bird bath with a 33 gallon garbage bag.

3.  I allowed the bleach and water to work for 2 – 3 hours.

After a few hours, I removed the garbage bag to inspect the status of the basin.  The bleach solution was working as expected.  It was eating away years of grime and filth.  The base was pretty clean and in excellent shape, so it didn’t take the work to clean as the basin.

Next, I had to remove the remaining dirt by hand.

4.  I always keep a stash of steel wool under my sink.  I put on the rubber gloves and started scrubbing.

5.  After 5 – 10 minutes of scrubbing and several good rinses, the basin looked squeaky clean and ready for the cracks to be sealed or a new purpose.

Last, if you have a bird bath that needs a good cleaning, try these tips.  You will be amazed at the results.  Also, check out my other attracting backyard birds tips before you leave.   And, be sure to check back so you can see if I decided to fix the basin and continue to use it as a birdbath or if I repurposed this beauty.  Next, the birdhouse makeover.  Stay tuned for that post.

9 Tips for Repairing Strained Mother and Daughter Relationships

Mother and daughter relationships are sacred.  Both will be affected if there is a breach or tension.  If you are the daughter or the mother, these nine tips may be helpful in repairing strained mother-daughter relationships.  The first three tips will be helpful when there is a profound breakdown in the relationship.  The rest of the tips will help both of you relate to each other positively.  Lets get to the tips so you can become empowered in your relationships!

mother daughter relationships

However, both of you need to have at least some desire and willingness to work towards genuine reconciliation. If the relationship has become toxic, it may be best to refrain from further contact. It’s imperative that you protect yourself from further damage.  Assess your relationship and decided if you want to repair your relationship.  If so, use these mother and daughter relationships tips to help you move forward:

  1. Make a date to meet together…

First, call your mother or daughter and ask if the two of you can meet for coffee and chat. Depending on your circumstances, decide whether a public place such as a restaurant would be more convenient than meeting in one of your homes.  Don’t include other family members.

  1. Talk things through thoroughly…

Decide what you want to say before you get together. First, thank your mother (or daughter) for meeting you and assure her of your love. Tell her how much the relationship means to you and that by all means you would like to be reconciled with her again. Take ownership of whatever your part may have been in the breakdown. Be honest about whatever the issues are. This is not the time to let your ego get in the way.  If you really want the relationship to be restored it will require a degree of humility.

  1. Decide to go forward…

Both of you will need to make the decision to go forward together. That means putting the past behind you and letting go of whatever caused the break down.  You need to see the future as a blank page waiting to be filled with new stories and experiences in your unique relationship.

  1. Practice forgiveness…

When you have both decided to rekindle the connection, you need to be prepared to navigate the way.  Forgiveness is essential if you want to make any progress.  Remember, forgiveness does not mean that you are condoning or minimizing what happened.  Instead, it means that you decide to let the matter go.  As a result, you can let go of   torment and bitterness.  Forgiveness should be given and received regularly by both parties.

  1. Be realistic and clear about your expectations…

Unrealistic expectation cause disappointments and damage emotions. Sometimes for an adult daughter it is difficult to realize that her mom may not always be available to nurture or rescue her.  Furthermore, she may not be able to meet her needs on a daily basis.  And for moms it can be a shock when their daughters want to fly out of the nest and make their own way. Both of you need to adjust to what it means to have an adult relationship, with clear and realistic expectations.

  1. Learn to listen carefully…

Often the words you say is not what you’re really thinking and feeling. That is why it is so important that you learn to listen carefully. Try to reflect back what the other person is saying so that you can be sure you understand what she means.  At first your mom may sound overly critical.  However, when you realize how worried she is about your safety you may be able to recognize her love for you.

  1. Learn to communicate carefully…

Don’t expect the other person to be a mind reader.  We need to communicate carefully and clearly.  Be gentle as you speak your heart . Harsh words pierce deeply and can leave a painful wound, even if you didn’t mean it that way.

  1. Make time for each other…

One of the most common complaints from mothers is that their adult daughters no longer have time for them. However, it can work both ways. It takes wisdom to find the balance of knowing how much time to spend together.  How much is enough, and how much is too much. Too much togetherness can cause petty irritations to surface. Yet,  not enough togetherness leads to isolation and a disconnection.  So seek to find the healthy balance of what will work best for both of you.

  1. Know your boundaries…

Boundaries are essential for any good relationship.  This includes mother and daughter relationships. If there has been bitter arguing or name calling, make it clear that you will leave if that restarts. Once you have set a boundary, be ready to enforce it for your own mental and emotional health. With perseverance and love it is possible to repair and maintain the powerful and precious mother and daughter relationships.

Why not let your child help you send out pretty, summer invitations to a few friends.  Furthermore, online e-vites are now a really simple and fun way to get invitations out.  Additionally, they are also a good way for your children to help develop their computer skills.

Food

The food is a huge part of any garden party.  So, whether it’s for adults or for kids, good food is the backbone of any good shindig. For kids backyard party foods, little sandwiches, cup cakes, chips and mini quiches are great ideas.  Also, sausage rolls will help keep kids happy until dinner. Make sure food is covered over, to prevent it being attacked by bugs and flies. Leftovers will be good for nibbling on later.  You may even be able to set out another spread the next day.

Yard Games

Next, make sure you put some thought into the types of games the children can play.  Having three to four different games lined up is a great way  to make sure no one gets bored.

How to Care For and Clean Your Mattress

Mattress Care

First, if you’re one of those fussy people who worries about dust mites, bed bugs and other gross little things that might live in your mattress, you’re not alone.  Sleeping in a bed that’s dirty or even worse infested with creepy crawlies can affect your sleep.  We’re pleased to present a few simple mattress care tips and effective methods that can make your sleep time nicer.  Check out our mattress care tips:

Refreshing a mattress

Next, start with a great mattress and keep it as clean as you possibly can.  Furthermore, be sure to peruse a reliable mattress buying guide prior to making your purchase. Take as much time as you need to make a wise decision regarding which sort of bed frame and mattress to buy. You will, after all, be spending a significant portion of your life in your new bed, so go for a mattress and frame that feel perfect right from the start.

Additionally, once you bring your new mattress home, remove the wrapping and give the top and both sides a thorough vacuum cleaning.  Vacuum the top and sides of the mattress every time you change your sheets. Use a crevice tool to reach tight spots.  And allow the mattress to air out for an hour or so before you remake the bed with fresh linens. Sprinkle the mattress with baking soda and vacuum after several hours to remove lingering odors, says Lifehacker magazine.

Also, reduce bedroom temperatures and lower humidity to keep dust mites at bay. Bay leaves under the bed may keep pesky bed bugs away, as well.  Baking soda with a few drops of essential oil added may reduce the attractiveness of your mattress, as far as both tiny bedroom pests are concerned.

Spot-cleaning and odor elimination

If your mattress becomes soiled, dab slight stains with laundry detergent diluted in warm water. For bigger stains, you may need to use a stronger detergent and water solution. Be careful not to saturate the mattress, but do use enough solution to lift away soil. Press with towels to blot up excess moisture before allowing the mattress to air dry.

Lingering perspiration problems are best removed from mattresses with an enzyme based odor-eliminating cleanser. Enzymes remove other biological odors, too.

Mattress maintenance

Another mattress care tip to prevent uneven wear, rotate your mattress at least every six months. Remind yourself to do this on the day clocks are set forward or backward. This is a good day to check smoke alarm batteries in the bedroom, as well. If you can remember to flip your mattress more often, even better.

A few words about bed bugs and dust mites

Highly used sleeping spaces are more likely to be visited by bedbugs.  For example, dormitories, hotels, hospitals, buses, homeless shelters and cruise ships are at high risk for bed bug infestation, explains Mayo Clinic.  People who can afford to travel the world often arrive home with bed bugs hitch-hiking on their luggage.  Cleaning the mattress in every hotel room you visit is impossible. Tossing the bedspread on the floor is not. Whatever you do, do not place suitcases on the bed until you remove the spread. Do this simple trick every time you enter a hotel room, and you may avert some measure of bed bug danger.

Fortunately, the little bugs known as dust mites don’t bite.  The thing mites eat is human skin flakes.  Unfortunately, your bed is generally full of them. Dust mites are everywhere, and there’s not much you can do about them except clean your blankets, pillows, and sheets often.  And thoroughly vacuum your mattress on a regular schedule.  Let your bare mattress air out for several hours on laundry day, too. Sunshine is, as they say, a great disinfectant.

Last, before you rush out and purchase a brand new mattress, do your homework.  Also, ask your friends about their beds.  Visit brick-and-mortar bed stores and sit on a number of beds.  Read, read, read reviews and see what other people are saying about different mattress brands and styles.  Most importantly, the time you spend selecting the perfect mattress now is sure to spare you years of bedtime unhappiness later on.  We hope that our mattress care tips will help you maintain a healthy mattress and get a good night’s sleep.
