4 of the Smartest Decisions You Can Make About Homeowners Insurance

home insurance tips

With Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria battering the United States,  Americans in affected areas have had a difficult time executing recovery efforts.  Most homeowners lacked sufficient homeowners insurance to qualify for compensation for their losses.  As a result, many face huge bills that must be addressed.  This is, unfortunately, an extreme case of what happens when unforeseen circumstances hit an area.  Residents realize perhaps for the first time that they don’t have sufficient coverage regarding their homeowner’s insurance.

Here are three decisions that could help ensure that you have the best homeowners insurance for your needs.

Search for the Right Insurance Company

Admittedly, searching for homeowner’s insurance isn’t how you’d like to spend your time. There’s much to think about and it can get confusing fast. Nevertheless, it’s a necessity. Before you try to shorten the search and cut the hassle by deciding on the first insurance company that offers you a rate that seems decent, do a more extensive search. See what other policyholders of other insurance companies have to say about the insurance company you have in mind or another one. You can find reviews online akin to Yelp reviews but for various insurance companies, such as NerdWallet’s review of Mercury Insurance. Take advantage of this “friendly advice,” so you won’t have any regrets later. The sites furnish you with a host of unbiased, nonpaid-for information about the insurer that you should use to your advantage. The information given should make you a more informed insurance customer.

Obtain Umbrella Insurance

Personal umbrella insurance provides additional liability coverage that goes above and beyond your standard policies’ limits. This insurance is great if for some unfortunate reason a lawsuit didn’t go your way.  With an umbrella policy, you’ll have the insurance you need to pay for the damages incurred.

Make Sure You Have Flood Insurance

Make sure whatever policy you have provides protection against severe damage caused by flooding that your standard homeowners insurance policy would not cover. This is important to those living in areas that may be especially subject to such a disastrous weather event and who therefore should consider this a vital part of their emergency plan. It should be noted that even persons living in areas that are not prone to heavy flooding would do well to buy flood insurance. The reason is that areas of the country that are not high risk and that the Federal Emergency Management Agency therefore classifies as moderate- to low-risk areas may also be hit with floods. In fact, FEMA estimates that over the past five years, over 20 percent of the claims came from homeowners living in these areas.

Go for the Discounts

People have no problem asking retail clerks about markdowns and upcoming discounts, but they don’t ask insurance agents the same.  It’s important to ask so you can see what the insurance can do for you.  Many insurers charge everyone differently.  For example, the rate is based on a range of factors, including the person’s credit score and their driving record.  They’re not beholden to charge a specific rate only.  However, there are a variety of discounts available for those willing to seek them out. Seniors over 55 as well as retired individuals should seek discounts. There’s also a discount called a “persistency discount.”  This discount is for those who’ve been good, long-standing policyholders.  Insurers don’t mind giving them a cut to keep them around for as long as possible. Also, there’s a discount for people who live near a fire department called a “fire department discount.”

Summing Up

Cheap insurance is something most people are after.  However, a good price should only be one consideration when looking for homeowners insurance. Other important considerations to buying quality homeowners insurance is disasters such as flooding.  Hearing the experiences of other policyholders on a particular insurance company is recommended. Visit consumer websites like NerdWallet, which compares various services.  Sites like this can provide you with the best read on an insurance company.

School Lunch Ideas for Picky Eaters

Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on school lunch ideas picky eaters.  School is back in session, and creating healthy school lunches can be daunting.  Especially, if you have a picky eater.  My grandchildren are both picky eaters.  When I’m visiting my grandchildren, I fix breakfast and lunches.  As a result, I have become a master at creating school lunch ideas for picky eaters.  My grandson has given me 5 years experience.  My granddaughter is just entering the first grade, and she is even more of a picky eater than her brother.  But, I’m no longer intimidated by “I don’t want that” or “I don’t like that.”

Also, I have found that if you involve your children in creating the lunches you can eliminate a lot of stress.  For example, take the kids to the groceries store with you.  Be sure to stay within your budget though.  The goal is to have them tell you want they want.  As a parent purchase what is healthy, but purchase a few items that they like too.  Most importantly, take a look at our school lunch ideas before you head to the grocery store.  Make a list of the school lunch ideas that you plan to purchase for your picky eater.

School Lunch Ideas for Picky Eaters:

school lunch ideas

Becoming an expert on school lunches required me to listen and pay attention.  For example, make a note of what’s left in your picky eater’s lunch bag.  Find out why they didn’t eat it.  There are times, the item wasn’t eaten because they were full from the other items.  So, the leftover items became an afterschool snack. Furthermore, you can eliminate that particular item from the menu the next time so they will eat everything.

So, for a week I had my grandson pack his own lunch.  I monitored what he was selecting, so I could make sure there was plenty on hand in the future.  I also monitored what wasn’t eaten. Most of the time, the fruit ended up being the left over. He does love bananas, so I make this particular fruit the go to for him.  But, my granddaughter loves bananas, oranges, apples, peaches, pears and grapes.  Oh, the options she gave me.  And, they were always eaten.

Main Meal Items for School Lunch

  • Pepperoni Rolls
  • Toasted Bagel with Cream Cheese
  • Toasted Bagel with Peanut Butter
  • Lunchable Pizza Box
  • Ham and Cheese Rollup
  • Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches
  • Pepperoni/Salami Slices and Cheese
  • Ham & Cheese Sandwich
  • Turkey Sandwich
  • Pasta

Fruit and Vegetables School Lunch Ideas

  • Celery with Ranch Dip
  • Peeled Clementines
  • Seedless Grapes
  • Celery with Peanut Butter
  • Apples with Peanut Butter
  • Banana and Strawberry Kabobs
  • Banana
  • Apple and Cheese Kabobs
  • Peach Slices
  • Carrot Sticks with Ranch Dip
  • Pears

Snacks

  • Pretzels and Cheese
  • Go-gurt
  • Yogurt
  • Cheese Sticks
  • Chips/Popcorn
  • Cookies/Brownies
  • Trail Mix
  • Fruit Snacks

Water

  • Flavored Water
  • Capri Sun Juice Box
  • Sunny D

Furthermore, invest in a well insulated lunch bag.  Having a well insulated bag is key to implementing school lunch ideas successfully.  Nobody wants to eat foods that are supposed to be warm and they end up cold and vice versa.  Most importantly, this includes your picky eater.  That will be a perfect reason for your picky eater not to eat their lunch.

Fall First Grade Activities for Kids

first grade activities

Fall is around the corner.  Hot dog roast, making S’mores, pumpkin patches and gathering around the fireplace with the family will begin.  Also, it’s a great time to start gathering cold weather for everyone.  My granddaughter started first grade last month. So, I’ll be putting together lots of worksheets for her and you will get the benefit of being able to print and use them.  Be sure to subscribe if you’re interested in printables.

Helping your child count to 20 before kindergarten is great, so if you have a preschooler these activities will help them too.

This time of year, the leaves are turning and pumpkin patches await a visit.  Have fun with our  First Grade Subtract the Apples activity sheets.  It also starts to get chilly and rainy.  So, we created a first grade activity pack that includes math, addition, matching, and writing pages. Also, children love to color.  We included a coloring page and a page for them to draw a face on the pumpkin.  You can download the fall first grade activity sheets here.

We have also created an addition math sheet that encourages children to trace the sum of the numbers.   Furthermore, you can find pumpkins in the Cutest Pumpkin in the Pumpkin Patch that need to be numbered.  Also, apples from the trees in the fall.  Your little one will have to number the falling apples in another activity.  Download the fall kindergarten activity sheets below here.

Take Time for You: Tips For New Moms

Tips for New Moms

One of the biggest traps most new moms fall into is not getting enough time for themselves. New moms often forget to do simple things.  For example, taking a daily shower and pursuing their personal interests. If you too are a new mom who has limited time because of your newborn baby, you’re reading the right article. Check out our tips for new moms and how you can find time for yourself in spite of being a new mother.

#1: Take time for a shower

Choose a time when you baby is napping or content in his swing or exersaucer.  Take the swing or exersaucer inside the bathroom or place it outside the bathroom.  If the swing or exersauce is outside the bathroom, leave the door open. If your baby suddenly starts to cry, you can sing a song or play a game with him from inside the bathroom. That may pacify them enough for you to complete your shower.

#2: Dress in the best possible manner

If you haven’t lost enough baby weight, don’t continue to wear maternity clothes.  Even though you may have weight loss in mind, find cheap shirts and jeans for your present size. Don’t forget the theory that looking good will also make you feel good.

#3: Measure yourself

More than 80% of women wear the wrong bra size.  Pregnancy hormones bring about changes in your body. Find a store where you can be measured properly or learn how to take our own measurements for a bra.  Purchase one that makes you feel and look good.

#4: Take out some time for yourself

Don’t feel bad or scared about leaving your baby for a few minutes.  If you find your blood pressure rising or you questioning yourself about why you embraced motherhood, take a 5 minute break.  Leave your baby in the crib or swing for 5 minutes.  You can even lose pregnancy weigh if you workout for even 5-10 minutes. You may also lose weight in your face after giving birth to your little bundle of joy.

As we see, motherhood is indeed an adjustment.  We hope that you found our tips for new moms helpful, and you will continue to still take care of your own needs.  You can never become a perfect mom in the beginning and you don’t have to stress about it. Don’t forget that your baby loves you the way you are too.

6 Tips to Make Homework Fun for Children

Homework Tips for Children

Your children may illicit moans and groans when you prod them to do homework. But focusing on reading, writing and math is important for kids academically. If you’re not up for the constant battle that comes with their studies, you may want to find a more positive approach. The following are 6 tips will make homework fun for children.

Create a Fun Environment

As you’ve probably noticed throughout your own career life, work can be mind-numbingly and boring at times. Even people with the most exciting of jobs can find it difficult to focus at times. If you’re looking to instill productivity in children after a long day of school, design a creative and fun setting for your kids to work in. Busy areas of the household may hold a variety of distractions, so you want to pick the right location.

You also want to set limits on the use of technology such as smartphones and television. Include your child in the process when you’re looking for a place. You may also want to paint the room an exciting color that instills brilliance and creativity. Prepare the environment with essentials your child will need to tackle their homework. This could include a calculator, pencils, paper, scissors, pens, crayons and a stapler. If your child is assigned books to read, find a cozy chair that is comfy enough for them to peruse the literature, but won’t promote falling asleep.

Be Productive Together

It can be challenging for your child to focus on homework when you’re busy running all over the place handling laundry and other household chores. According to a maid service out of Atlanta, you can enjoy having a germ-free and spotless home every day by leaving it in the hands of the pros and still be free to work beside your child. Whether your time is spent catching up on work, personal emails, bills or planning a vacation, this time together makes it easier for your child to concentrate.

Enrich the Senses

Fidget spinners are a popular tool that engages your child’s sense of touch. It’s also a method that can ease stress and help them focus. If you’re looking to enrich your child’s other senses through learning, stress balls and white noise machines are essentials for stimulating their sense of hearing and touch. Baking cookies or a cake is another learning tool that helps hone a child’s math skills through measuring ingredients. It also engages the sense of smell. You can make learning about the body’s senses fun by placing a silk scarf over your child’s eyes and finding objects that they can touch, taste and smell. Reward them with stickers or a treat when they guess correctly.

Designate Office Hours

Your child may need assistance with their homework. While you may want to hover as they sift through their book work, set up allotted times your children can come to you with questions. This method may sound regimented, but it can prevent you from taking over their homework. It also allows them the self-esteem children need to do their own work. You can model good academic behavior by teaching them the importance of reading a book instead of watching T.V. or listening to the radio while your child studies.

Use Visual Aids

Children are visual learners, so you want them to see their progress.  Another way to make homework fun for children is to set up bulletin boards.  Yocan display work assignments and when they are due. Place encouraging messages or posters that instill positivity. Post graded work assignments both good and bad. If the homework received a good grade, this can encourage them to keep up the good work. If they received poor marks, find ways to lift their spirits, so they will do better next time.  Silly jokes and anecdotes can ease tension if your child is stressed over a test or finals.

Prepare Smart Snacks

If your child is hungry, they may be tired, unmotivated and cranky. You can provide your child with the energy they need to focus on their homework by preparing smart snacks. Allow your child to help in the preparation and choose from a list of healthy foods. Apples with nut butters provide energy. Your child may also benefit from healthy grains such as whole-grain crackers and cheese cubes or baked tortilla chips and salsa.

After your child has spent the entire day at school, motivating them to do their homework can be a difficult feat. But don’t sweat their lack of motivation. Using the above 6 strategies, you’ll be able to transform their math or vocabulary lessons into a fun adventure.  Make homework fun for children!

Foot Massage – First, if you have a portable foot massager/bath, pull it out and pour yourself a glass of wine.  Roll up those leggings, and soak those tootsies.  If various friends will be using the foot massage, be sure to sanitize it between uses.

Give Yourself a Manicure  – Second, remove old polish, shape your nails and soak your fingers in a simple solution of your favorite liquid bath soap.  Better yet, have a friend remove the excess cuticle around your nail and give you a fresh coat of polish.

Facial – Next, a facial is always good.  So, use your favorite facial products and have your friends bring theirs.  You can provide warm water for rinsing and a towel as well as olive oil to use as a moisturizer.

Eye Treatment – Furthermore, slice a few cool cucumbers and place them over your eyes.  Turn on a relaxing DVD, and let the cucumbers do their job.

Finally, prepare a light lunch or finger foods and catch up on what’s been happening with everyone.  If you decide to go it alone, prepare a salad or sandwich and chill a bottle of your favorite wine.

Last, create a spa day party favor for your guests. It doesn’t have to be expensive.  Just show your appreciation.  I grabbed these items from the dollar store.  A wine glass, a loofah and a facial brush are perfect.  Also, you can replace the facial brush with a disposal razor.  Create the spa day sundae above.  It’s simple, you can add bath salt to the bottom of the glass as well.  Add your razor or facial brush and than the loofah.  I think a solid color with white gives the sundae the perfect touch.  The white is reminiscent of a dollop of whipped cream.

Finally, grab a cute gift bag, and you’re set.  Hand them to your guests as they’re leaving to show a token of appreciation for helping to make the day a success.  Last, we hope you enjoyed our spa day ideas.  You may also like: 17 Ways Moms Can Refuel and Relax.
