The Nutcracker Activity Sheets

Today, I’m sharing parenting advice on The Nutcracker activity sheets for kids. The Nutcracker is one of my favorite ballets.  Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms will be a Christmas classic forever.  I can’t wait to take my granddaughter to see The Nutcracker during the holidays.  She just completed her first year of ballet.

The Nutcracker

First, I remember seeing The Nutcracker as a little girl around the holidays.  We had favorites like Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and the Charlie Brown Christmas.  But, I fell in love with the ballet and the music.

The Nutcracker Activity Sheets:

Sugar Plum Fairy

Next, my daughter danced in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker.  Her first ballet was The Nutcracker.  I remember her costumes like it was yesterday.  She was a flower and snowflake.  The costumes were beautiful.  My granddaughter is dancing now.  So, I’m looking forward to taking her to the movie in November.  For those unfamiliar with The Nutcracker, it’s about a little girl named Clara.

The Nutcracker

Misty Copeland is the Prima Ballerina and Mackenzie Foy is the doll Clara.  All Clara wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at her Godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads to the coveted key.

The Nutcracker Soldiers

But, the key disappears into a strange world.  Clara follows and it’s there that she encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight).  Additionally, there’s a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms.  So, The Four Realms include the following: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and the solider Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm.  Additionally, The Fourth Realm is home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren).  Finally, Clara and Phillip hope to retrieve Clara’s key and return harmony to the unstable world.

Also, the movie stars Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy.  The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston.   E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale is the inspiration for the movie.

The Nutcracker

So, in anticipation of the movie coming to theatres in November, we have a fun activity pack.  The pack includes coloring pages, a maze and spot the difference sheet.  Most importantly, save the date!

We hope you enjoy watching The Nutcracker this holiday season.  Additionally, we hope that your children will enjoy coloring and playing the activity sheets.  You can download them here.

5 Common Pregnancy Complications

pregnancy complications

Complications in pregnancy are quite common regardless of age or the stage of the pregnancy.  Some women have healthy and easy pregnancies while others have difficulties from the first trimester.

Here’s five of the most common complications.

  • High Blood Pressure

Also called hypertension.  This condition is common in most women who had issues with their blood pressure before pregnancy.  Narrow arteries increase your blood pressure increases. This can reduce the amount of blood and nutrients reaching the fetus.  If not treated, hypertension can lead to pre-term labor.

If high blood pressure only occurs during the second trimester, it is called gestational hypertension.  Usually, it will go away after childbirth.  Medication can control high blood pressure.  Monitor your high blood pressure regularly.  Relaxing more reduces stress, which makes your blood pressure spike.

  • Gestational Diabetes

Food is turned into glucose.  The pancreas releases a hormone, insulin, to help this process happen.  Hormonal changes could make the insulin either not enough or it is not well utilized by the body.  This could lead to glucose flooding the blood. Gestational diabetes can be controlled by following a specific meal plan.  It should go away after delivery.

  • Low amniotic fluid

The fluid that protects your baby during your pregnancy should be enough to absorb any shock, and keep them safe for the nine months.  Oligohydramnios develops if their is not enough fluid.  This complication can occur if the mom to be is a GST Lawyer, stay at home mom or a secretary.  However, the solution to Oligohydramnios is to monitor things closely to ensure the baby continues to grow normally.  If the situation is dire and the mother is close to her due date, then labor can be induced.

  • Ectopic pregnancy

A fertilized egg should transplant inside the uterus, not attach on the wall or the fallopian tube.  Transplants outside the uterus are ectopic.  There is no way to transplant the egg inside the uterus after this happens.  So, the only solution is usually to end the pregnancy.  If left to develop, the growing embryo could rupture the fallopian tube and cause internal bleeding which could be fatal.

Miscarriage

This is certainly the most difficult complication as the mother-to-be loses a baby in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.  A majority of miscarriages happen before the 12th week.  Chromosomal abnormalities cause miscarriages.  These abnormalities prevent the baby from developing.  The first signs of a miscarriage are vaginal spotting or bleeding.  If these symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately.

How to Learn More About Yourself

Learning more about yourself is always a good thing.  It can enhance your career prospects or help you get insight into how you can be a better person.   During your journey, you may end up unearthing a skill that you never knew existed.  Most importantly, you may be able to use that ability to help your future.  However, you must enter into the world of  self-discovery in order to learn more about yourself and become self-empowered:

confidence tips

Push yourself out of your comfort zone

You’re never going to unearth any skills that you may have lying under the surface if you don’t find a way to bring them out.  As a result, you have to start finding your way into alien territories and push yourself to enhance.

Quite simply, this means stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. This could mean doing taking on different tasks at work set to taking on new and exciting challenges with friends.  For example, such as entering an Escape Room.  An Escape Room is where you can play games and solve puzzles with others.  Each room has its own storyline.  You have 60 minutes to search for clues and solve the puzzles to earn your freedom and escape the room!  It’s an opportunity to find make new friends and to do something different.  Taking on new tasks allows you to offer your skills or assistance on a new project.  Think about your knowledge and skill and put them to use.  Doing so will help you learn more about yourself.

 Adhere to your body clock

You may have been told from a young age that “the early bird catches the worm.”  But, you don’t necessarily have to get up early in the morning in order to be successful.  Everybody’s body clock is different.  For some people, getting up later or even during the day is just more natural. So, if you feel like getting up early does nothing at all to help you to be proactive then try getting up a bit later.

 Listen to your gut

Start listening to those gut feelings you get in certain situations.  It’s your intuition raising red flags so you can assess what’s happening.  Most of the time it’s a warning about something or someone.  If something doesn’t sit right follow your instinct.

Finally, take heed and implement these steps into your life so you can learn more about yourself.

Nike Insulated Lunch Bag Review

This post contains affiliate links.  If you make a purchase I may be compensated; however, there will no additional charge to you.

I purchased this Nike lunch bag for my grandson.  He has moved from Elementary to Middle School, and is not longer interested in TV characters.  He’s an athlete, so I thought this Nike lunch bag would be a perfect back to school gift.  He loves it.  So, do I.  Although it’s an upright, it holds as much as the rectangle lunch bag he has previously.  The bag comes in approximately 35 colors and designs.  There’s teal, pink, camo, polka dots and more.   So, it’s perfect for girls too.  They truly have something for everybody.  The Swoosh is the finishing touch.

My grandson loves sandwiches, so most mornings that is what he gets.  In addition, there’s a banana, yogurt or cheese sticks, cookies, chips and a juice box.  If not a sandwich, than a Lunchable.   Yes, it all fits and yes the bag is empty when he comes home.

The lunch bag is made of quality material, and insulated.  Of course, I wouldn’t expect anything less from Nike.  It has 2 zippers that are nice and strong.  The quality of the zippers is one of the first things that I check on lunch bags.  Kids can be hard on zippers when they’re opening and closing them everyday.

lunchbox reviews

Next, I love the bottom of the bag.  It’s perfect for a sandwich case.  Utilizing this space frees up space in the upper portion.  Which, allows me to fit in all of the other items.  The banana was the hardest item to fit into his other lunch bags.  This upright bag allows me to put in a banana with ease.  Because he plays football, eating bananas daily is essential for his potassium level.  It keeps him from getting cramps.

I highly recommend that you check out this Nike lunch bag if you have a son/grandson who is into athletics and transitioning from elementary to middle school.  It’s the perfect back to school, birthday or Christmas gift.

6 Tips to Take the Stress Out of School Mornings

how to eliminate school stress

Chaos can lead to a stressful morning.  Who needs to be stressed out at 8:00 am on school mornings.  I have found that organization is key to eliminating school morning stress.  As a result, I take preventive measures to ensure school mornings are pleasant.  Keeping the environment positive  takes the stress out of my mornings:

Pack lunches the night before – I have found that packing lunches before bed saves so much time.  I pack juice boxes, apples/bananas, and any other items that won’t get soggy at night.  Place the lunch box in the refrigerator.  That leaves making sandwiches in the morning.  Sip a cup of coffee or check out the news with your extra time.

Give kids their bath the night before –  Getting kids up on school mornings can be a major effort.  I know it is with my granddaughter.  So, I have found giving them a bath or having teens shower the night before eliminates struggles in the morning.  Having them brushing their teeth, washing their face and hands and getting dressed is so much easier.

Get clothes and essentials out the night before – Nothing causes more arguments in the morning than not being able to find shoes, disagreements on clothing and not being able to find book bags.  Gather shoes, book bags and anything else needed as well.  I line up the book bags/back packs and lunches so all they have to do is grab them on the way out the door.

Sign any papers the night before – Read and sign any papers and place them in the kid’s book bags the night before.

Distribute lunch money or fees the night before – Additionally, hand any money that needed for lunches, snacks or book fairs the night before.  I place the money in envelopes, and mark each with the teacher’s name.  I also include what the money is for and than place the envelopes in the book bags.

Warm the car on cold mornings – Having your kids complaining about being cold on school mornings is not the way you want them to start the day or you.  Having them toasty warm when they reach student drop off is the way to go.

These tips have worked great for me when I have my grandchildren on school days.  It leaves them with enough time to watch cartoons or play on their electronics before I have to shuffle them out the door.  And eliminates head aches and stress for me.

Why Parents Should Seek Help for Drug Addiction

Growing up in an environment where parents are addicted to drugs is devastating.  Some of the issues that children face include violence, a lack of emotional connection, and a lack of financial support.  Furthermore, they may even have to take care of their parents.  Parents who are addicted struggle to take care of themselves.  If you have been struggling with addiction, getting help will lead to a path of empowering yourself.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on why you should seek help for drug addiction:

drug addiction

You will deliver a healthy child

The number of kids born with opioid withdrawal syndrome has increased.  Unfortunately, pregnant women are abusing painkillers and hard drugs like heroin.  When you are pregnant and abuse drugs, you are creating a lifelong struggle for an unborn child.  However, it is possible to become clean before giving birth.  Seeking help from a rehabilitation center or other facility is recommended.  Experiencing withdrawals can create serious and life-threatening complications. However, giving birth to a healthy baby is imperative.  It’s an opportunity to break the cycle of drug dependency.

You stop being a threat to your kids

When parents abuse drugs, it is the kids who end up being the primary casualties.   You become a better parent when you make a commitment to recover from an addiction.  As a result, you can stop being verbally and physically violent toward your kids.  And, possibly even mend the broken trust.

You raise emotionally healthy kids

Kids who have grown up around parents that abuse drugs end up with a number of emotional issues. There are those who end up withdrawn, shy and antisocial.  On the other end of the spectrum, there are those who end up copying the behavior of their parents.  They end up abusing drugs themselves. A lack of physical and emotional availability means that  someone else becomes responsible for the children.  The lessons are never positive. When you quit drugs, you establish your presence in your kids lives.  Furthermore, you can parent and follow their progress in school.  They start confiding in you about things that you previously couldn’t pay attention to.  The new relationship not only strengthens your bond, but also protects your kids from making serious life mistakes.

Your kids get a better chance to live a healthy adult life

The other benefit that you get from quitting addiction is that you are emotionally available.  You teach them how to form healthy bonds as they grow up.  So, they are able to form a healthy and stable emotional attachment to you.  As a result, they grow up managing healthy relationships.  This includes with peers and even healthy marriages. The ultimate gift which comes from recovery, you will have modeled positive parental behavior.  They will also be great parents to their kids.  Poor parenting is generational.  Sobriety allows it to end.

There are many other benefits from getting sober.  Sobriety has a direct correlation with your kid’s academic performance.   Being successful academically translates to success in life.  It will raise the social and economic status of your family as well.  Additionally, the knowledge gets passed from one generation to the next. If you are struggling with addiction, think about how you can transform your family.  You can change your kids lives by  getting sober and making a commitment to do it.

Sunday’s Best Linkup – #193

We’re taking a breaking this week!  First, I apologize for the late notice.  I’m on vacation this week and when I checked in yesterday morning at the resort, I found that the internet service was not working.  Furthermore, the provider is not available on the week-ends to assist with any problems.   As a result, I was unable to send the code to co-hosts and I was unable to publish the post.

Although I have solved the problem, my stress level went through the roof yesterday.  So, I’m going to relax since that is my reason for being in the beautiful Canaan Valley in Davis, WV.  I have learned to find the good in a bad situation.  I now have an unlimited data plan, which I put off purchasing for months and months.  Oh, let me be honest for about a year.  Anyway, lesson learned.  The next time I run into this  problem I can just connect to my phone.

Again, I apologize for any inconvenience.  Please come back next week with your recipes, crafts, DIY, makeovers, Halloweens, cocktails, mocktails and more.  Have a great week!  Hugs and many blessings.

The Top 5 Landscaping Trends of 2018

Every year, we see amazing new landscaping trends that inspire us to revitalize our outdoor living spaces.  A home is so much more than just the interior rooms.   It’s also the space outside your home, where you can enjoy time with friends and family.  I love gardening and just enjoying the nature and the beauty that surrounds me.  So, today I’m sharing gardening tips on landscaping trends.

2018 brings us landscaping trends that focus on turning the exterior of our homes into a true living space, for humans and wildlife. 2018 incorporated new plants and encouraged the integration of edibles and non-edible plants!

1.   Embracing Multipurpose Spaces

Your backyard doesn’t have to be just for the kids to play or just where you grow veggies. Embrace multipurpose – everything in your backyard should have several uses.

A seat can also be a storage location for gardening tools or toys for your kids. A concrete fireplace can also serve as a planter or as a way to grill food by adding hooks for a grate. Garden Design Magazine shows us this beautiful fireplace that also serves as a place for family and friends to gather together. When you add elements to your landscape and yard, make sure they aren’t just a one purpose item.

Remember that your fence can be a place to hang flowering baskets or an area that a plant can grow upwards.

2.   Water Management

Sustainability is a popular word right now, and it no longer just means focusing on a sustainable lifestyle. A sustainable landscape influences how landscapes are created and maintained, especially when you focus on the years to come. One of the major trends in 2018 is focusing on eco-friendly watering practices

If you haven’t heard of xeriscaping, now is the time to learn about. Xeriscaping is about how to create a landscape that uses low-water plants and focusing on plants native to that particular region. It also uses trees and shade plants properly, as well as creating dry streams to utilize rainwater better.

Another trend that goes along with water management is incorporating succulents into the landscape. These plants come in exotic and fun shapes and forms. The benefit of using succulents in landscaping is that they are easy to maintain and create a fun statement. They are great for new gardeners!

3.   Colorful Plants

Who wants a garden with just green or boring colored plants? Not you! 2018 brought us landscaping trends that jump with vibrant and creative plants. At one time, a garden of simple greenery was in, but this year, we saw landscape designers integrating plants with color like violets, verbena, iris, clematis, and other vibrant plants.

Another trend is using patterned plants that might have stripes or over intricate details. It wasn’t unusual to see plants with striped leaves or colored veins.

Some other exciting plants in the latest landscaping trends include:

  • Onyx Red Ornamental Pepper
  • Queeny Lime Orange Zinnia
  • Prima Ginger Coneflower
  • Rockin’ Deep Purple Salvia
  • Bee Balm
  • Sky’s Edge Scutellaria

4.   Creating Natural Habitats for Wildlife

Everyone knows that our bees are in danger, but did you know that our native pests and birds also need a home to live? Butterflies are on the decline, and habitat loss is a huge factor in the decline. Even frogs and turtles feel the loss!

As cities and suburbs continue to grow and expand, species are losing their homes. For years, gardeners and landscapers created designs without little thought to the wildlife. Now, landscapers realized that there is no reason that we cannot create beautiful, thoughtful landscapes that also meet the needs of the local wildlife, especially the ones in danger.

It isn’t unusual for people to create landscapes specifically for animals and wildlife. For example, you can include different plants that are loved by the monarch beautiful and become a verified monarch butterfly garden, where they might stop on their great migration.

Here’s how you can create a habitat for wildlife:

  • Create seed-producing and berry-bearing plants
  • Don’t use any insecticides or pesticides
  • Replace some of your lawn
  • Don’t clear out your plants in the fall, allowing insects to overwinter in your garden

Make sure you include plenty of bee-friendly flowers in your landscaping to encourage pollination. Pollinators can also increase the yield of your flowering veggie crops like cucumbers, melons, and squash. Bees love flowers like zinnias, nasturtiums, alyssum, cosmos, and calendula. Calendula is also a well-known medicinal herb.

2018 brought the integration of new edibles, perennials, and funky plants to landscapes, commonly known as “food-scaping”, according to WikiLawn Fort Worth. Gardeners are more and more likely to experiment with new plants and finding cool ways to showcase the plants.

Right now, vertical gardens are hot! Grow a funky new cucumber variety up your privacy fence or grow pole green beans – that aren’t always green – along with your pergola.

There is a whole world of plants that you can grow. Perennial plants are a huge hit in 2018. Plant them one time and they continue to grow each year. Did you know there are perennial veggies, like asparagus and rhubarb? A single asparagus plant can produce for 20 years! That’s a lot of veggies!  Don’t you love this landscaping trend idea?

Try things like cucamelons, which are the size of grapes but taste like cucumbers. Plant a few ground cherries that are in the nightshade family but can be used to create pies and jams. So, experiment! Add new plants you’ve never tried before. It makes for an exciting and unique landscape.

Best Walking Trails in Spain

Spain is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. While we often hear that people visit this Atlantic-Mediterranean country for its coastal attractions, Spain is also rich in walking trails.   Today, we’re give you travel tips on the best walking trails in Spain:

walking trails in Spain

The Mediterranean Trail – GR92

The GR92 is a great route for families that like to stroll along the sea.  It stretches from the town of Portbou on the French border all the way to Castellon. The total length of this walking route is 583km or 362 miles.

Naturally, most families won’t walk this entire path, but rather choose a part that suits their needs. The most convenient way to set out on this route is to stay in Barcelona and start walking from there.  You’ll walk above and through the bays, cliffs, and peaceful little towns that dot the Costa Brava. This route also goes through the countryside above Barcelona.  You can take in breath-taking views of this wonderful Catalan city. If you are looking to take night-time photos, make sure you carefully calculate your time carefully.

El Camino Natural del Ebro

The longest river in Spain, the Ebro, is one of the most popular non-seaside destinations. Among the popular walking  trails in Spain is The El Camino del Ebro (GR99).  You and your family can choose from as many as 42 different stages on this path.  You can see the full diversity of Spanish terrain.  There’s lush deciduous forests and meadows as well as the pine forests of the Mediterranean.

You can also visit a plethora of different towns on this route, like Zaragoza in Aragon.  Parents who like wine and vineyards should opt for an alternative route, parallel to the GR99.  This path connects Haro and Miranda del Ebro, and it runs through scenic vineyards.

El Camino de Santiago

One of the most popular pilgrimage routes in Europe, the Camino de Santiago – the Way of St James – stretches between steep mountains and fertile plains.  Families with school children can take on the full-scale pilgrimage, which starts at St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France. This route will take about five weeks to complete. You’ll see some of the most attractive churches and religious edifices during this walk.

There’s an alternative if your kids are still young or are not keen on spending weeks walking.  In that case, take the “English route”. It can start at El Ferrol, or in La Coruña, in Galicia. The distance from there to Santiago de Compostela is a bit more than 100km or 62 miles.  So, you have a variety of starting points for you walk.

What your kids will love on this walking trail are the pilgrim’s passports, i.e. the credencial. You’ll be given a stamp for every night you spend in one of the pilgrim-friendly accommodation facilities. Once you reach Santiago, it will serve as proof that you’ve successfully finished the pilgrimage and receive the special certificate called compostela.

The Cabrera Islands

The Cabrera Islands walking routes should be at the top of the list of walking trails in Spain if you have the means.  It’s for families who have enough time and assets to make their walking holidays in Spain more exciting.  This group of islands is situated about 10km or 6 miles south of the island of Mallorca. It’s a national park that is not inhabited, but there are some beautiful walking trails, suitable for all generations of walkers.

The easiest way to get there is to book a walking excursion from Colonia de Sant Jordi in Mallorca to the Cabrera Islands.

Several walking options are offered here, but most people either hike to La Miranda, because of the beautiful caves in its vicinity, or walk to the famous lighthouse. This is also a pleasant trail by the sea with a wonderful view of the horizon.

Conclusion

Spain is much more than sea and palms.  Spending your family holidays without trying at least some stages of these walking trails in Spain would be a shame.  So, get your hiking things together and start your Spanish walking holiday.
