Alaska Educational Activities for Kids

Welcome to our state word search puzzle and related activities series. This educational activity is new for 2019. This is the second state in our series. We have a few educational activities for you today.  We have created Alaska educational activities, which includes a word search puzzle, fact sheet, and other activities for children to learn about the great state of Alaska.

Alaska Activities

Alaska Educational Activities

First, we created a word search puzzle.  It’s filled with words connected to Alaska and should give you ideas to start a conversation about animals and activities in the state.  You can also find information on the Alaska Fact Sheet.  These are great activities for homeschooling or extra homework lessons.

Alaska Educational Activities

Incorporate additional facts into the lesson plan. For example, what are glaciers?  Discuss the state flower, the Forget-Me-Not.  And, how the state bird, the Willow Ptarmigan, turns from brown and white to all white during the winter.  In addition to the word search and history sheet, we included coloring pages and a writing exercise.

Have fun coloring this fun picture of Alaska’s state bird the Willow Ptarmigan.  The Ptarmigan is a short, stocky bird that reminds you of a chicken or goose.   So, the Willow Ptarmigan became Alaska’s official state bird in 1955.

Alaska State Bird

Next, Alaska’s state flower is the Forget Me Not.   It became the official state flower until 1917.  The beautiful blue petals and yellow centers make these flowers a standout.

Alaska activities

Last, Alaska’s official insect is the Four-Spotted-Skimmer Dragonfly.  You can discuss the beautiful black bears roaming Alaska.  There are an estimated 100,000 black bears in Alaska.  The black bear is the smallest bear in North America.

So, be sure to incorporate these Alaska educational activities into your homeschool history lesson plan or extra homeschool activities. You can download the activity pack here.   Stay turned for our Alaska Wildlife Fact Sheets for additional activities.  Finally, be sure to download our Alabama Activities.

How to Choose the Perfect Dress Color for Your Flower Girls

Wedding Tips

Young girls love dressing up in bold and bright colors. They often wear vibrant colors in their everyday life, which can symbolize their beauty, innocence, and charm. Yet, when it comes to young girls and choosing the perfect flower girl dress, opting for something colorful may not be the best option.  If you’re struggling to choose a flower girl dress color, you’re in the right place. We know there is a wide range of color choices.  As a result, it makes it impossible to choose the perfect color without even thinking about the style or design.  We have a few tips that will make you feel confident when choosing a flower girl dress in the future.

Consider skin tone

Typically, most flower girl dresses are light and pale as they are similar to the traditional bridal gown that the bride wears on her big day. This means that most of the colors you’ll come across when shopping for flower girl dresses will be paler than you may want. In spite of this, when choosing a color for the dress, ensure you consider the skin tone of the little girl.  Lighter skin tones tend to suit pale greens, pinks and white whereas darker skin tones look even more beautiful when contrasted with pale yellows, blues, and greys. White or cream colors will work with practically any skin tone.  So, if you want to keep your options safe – we would recommend choosing these colors.

Keep it in line with their personality

Children radiate light and positive energy.  What will make it even better is allowing them to wear a dress color that is in line with their personality. When you know what style of dress you want them to wear – give your flower girls the option of choosing a color themselves.  Little girls love being in control of their clothing, and will choose something they love.  This also keeps everyone happy on the wedding day too!

Research current trends

For those of you who are struggling to choose a color, but don’t want to opt for cream or white,  we suggest you research current flower girl dress color trends online. There are thousands to choose from.  And, they all look beautiful. Researching online may give you a better idea of what you want as well.  We hope by doing this, you will have a flashbulb moment in which you realize the color you truly want your flower girl to wear.

Stay traditional

With all of the options to choose from, it can be difficult to select the perfect color of the flower girl dress that will match with your wedding day. Many people do stay traditional when it comes to flower girl dresses.  Which means you will be looking at pure cream or white colors.  Ivory flower girl dresses are popular and look amazing.  So, you may want to consider choosing this color.

Game Day Activities for Kids

Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on game day activities for kids.  Super Bowl Sunday or any game day for that matter is the perfect time for gathering with family and friends. In reality, most game day activities are centered around adults.  Unfortunately, that leaves the kids wondering around and searching for things to do.  Video games are readily available; however, I’m all for intellectual stimulation.

game day activities for kids

So, I created these game day activities for the older kids.  There’s a Football Unscramble Game that uses  football terms including turnover, tackle, touch down, cheerleaders and more.  It also includes an answer key.

game day activities for kids

Another one of our game day kid’s activity is a football crossword puzzle.  It’s challenging, and will keep your football player/lover busy while you’re finishing the gameday menu or other festivities.

If your child needs to work on their writing and grammar, we have writing game day activity for kids.  The activity will require the participant to write sentences using football terminology.  This would be a great group activity too, so print off several copies.

game day activities

Our last game day kid’s activities is a word search football terminology.  It contains around 20 of the most used football terms.  My 13 year old grandson loves word search puzzles.  It’s a football player too!

football word search puzzle

Set up a card table or area where the kids can play these games along with a few game day snacks.  These games are perfect for adults too.  My 6’2 240 pound son-in-laws loves working word search puzzles.  Form teams, and give out prizes to the first team who completes the Unscramble and Crossword Puzzle Games.  Or, you can print these activities to keep your guess busy while you finishing up snack trays.  Or, use them to keep the kids busy while you’re mingling and entertaining friends.  They will love the game day challenges and involvement in game day.  Download the printables here.

Helping Your Child Grow Confidence Through Competence

If there’s one thing you can state with absolute certainty about the life of a parent, it’s that they have many different roles.  When raising a child, there are a certain amount of notes you need to hit correctly.  Most of these will come through instinct.  Today, we’re sharing parenting tips on helping your child build confidence.   Be a caring parent, encouraging and supportive will have an enormous impact by itself.  However, there are other responsibilities including teaching children how to brush their teeth.  Or, being firm with their bedtimes to encourage a healthy sleeping pattern.

parenting tips

Every child is different, but many children have universal needs. One of these will be the need to have their confidence slowly grow over time. A child without confidence can become extremely fearful of trying to express themselves.  This can lead to negative self-belief.   Unfortunately, some parents do little to address this. Helping your children grow confidence should be considered one of the most important gifts you can bestow on them.  However, simply telling your child they can do no wrong is the quickest way to raising a wanting person.  Instead, show them they can be competent while being humble.

With these tips you will be helping your child grow confidence:

Martial Arts

One way to help your child grow confidence is martial arts.   Martial arts can often help a child grow and feel more comfortable in their bodies. The emphasis here isn’t to help them turn into a Bruce Lee.  Additionally, it is not to fight off other children in the schoolyard with flips and cat screeches. Instead, it’s to build a sense of character, to learn safety in exercise, and yes, how to defend themselves if need be. However, most practitioners and trainers will not teach your child the ins and outs of causing harm.  Rather, they will teach them how to respect others.

Furthermore, they will learn how to avoid any form of conflict in the best manner possible while keeping their respect. For example, most martial arts sensei’s will ask a hypothetical question.  For example, how you should defend yourself if your wallet is asked for by a violent thug.  They may suggest giving them the wallet peacefully.  After all, this is the most rational and reasonable method of walking away from something without being harmed.  Besides, you can always find another wallet.

While this particular lesson might not apply completely to your child right now, it demonstrates what goes into martial arts tuition.  Not only is it a social environment, but it can also helps them feel confident.  It teaches them correct technique.  Additionally, it helps them to proceed up the colored belt hierarchy.  They will learn how to bow and show respect to authority.  Furthermore, they will learn to be grateful and how to best orchestrate themselves.  Martial arts can help even the most withdrawn child come out of their shell.  So, we recommend Karate, Jiu Jitsu, or even the child-friendly forms of Kung-Fu.

Care & Consideration

Giving your child the space to care about something can help them learn self-reliance and care outside of the school environment.  Helping your child grow confidence with a pet is perhaps one of the best methods.  Hamsters, Gerbils and bunnies make great pets.  Something low-key with low maintenance is recommended rather than a puppy that must be trained. However, if you have the time to devote a puppy is a great idea.

If pets are out of the question, working on an art project together is recommended.  It could be model construction or painting a mural.  Creating is a great way to become self-reliant, becoming expressive and helping children feel proud of themselves.

confidence in children

Sports

Sports can be an extremely wonderful method of helping a child grow.  While martial arts and artistic projects can help them learn how to be confident, they don’t offer much in the form of team work.  Don’t force your child into anything, but try to see where their natural inclination goes.  Perhaps purchasing backyard batting cages could help them learn how to hit the ball with precision and confidence.

You might decide to help them enroll in an after-school activity.  Or, teach them how to play pool on the table in the garage. It doesn’t matter what the sport is or how much energy they exert.  What’s important is that they enjoy it.  The goal is to teach them how to feel good at something.  And, how you help them feel involved with it. Sports can sometimes be disparaged as forcing sensitive children into physical activity.  But sometimes it can help a sensitive child to get past their fears and become self-assured. Of course, every child is different.  But sometimes, a little risk can go a long way.

Implement these tips, and you will certainly be on your way to helping your child grow confidence through competence.

How to Find Balance in Your Life When You Become a Mother

Motherhood comes with a myriad of emotions and expectations.  Society pressures women to become fantastic mothers.  However, there are effects that most of us do not anticipate.  As a result, you may wonder how to find balance in your life once you become a mother.

The role “mother” or even “wife” causes us to overshadow other aspects of our womanhood.  If you feel you have lost yourself and can only talk about yourself as either a mother or wife, it’s time to step back and start empowering yourself again.  Assess how you got there, and than figure out how to find balance in your life again.

Raising Your Self-Esteem

It is all about the kids

Until children are able to take care of themselves, a mother is left to pour into their life constantly.  Furthermore, they require nothing in return. This one-sided relationship can leave a mother with no energy for herself.  There is a beauty in the selflessness of motherhood.  However, just because you become a mother doesn’t mean you stop being a women or having needs, wants and desires.

If you feel you are missing something in your life, think about what changes you can make. That does not automatically mean diverting attention from your children.  But, you can find pockets of time where you can be alone before the kids wake up.  This may mean getting up a little early or making time for yourself while they’re in school or after bedtime.   Most importantly, find something to do that you love.  It could be pottery or volunteer work.  Make it about you.

Your career was a big deal or still is

When you meet someone, after asking their name, what question do you ask next?  If you ask what they do and they are a CRA tax audit Hamilton professional what feelings do you get?  Society has conditioned us to place a high premium on what we do in life.  When you become a mother, things change.  When you are devoted to your children you can become bored and lonely.  You may find that you are unable to relate unless you’re talking about your role as a mother and your children or husband.

However, it is vital to remember that your career is not what defines you.  Just as you are not the total of who your children are.  Challenge yourself to find commonalities that don’t make you feel awkward.  Own who you are and wear it boldly.  You aren’t here to impress others, just be the best you that you can be so you can find balance in your life.

ways to save money

Money is the leading cause for stress in the US.  Approximately, 30% of adults report significant financial stress. Additionally, stress can easily creep up on you, especially if you’re raising a family.  Fortunately, there are some obvious ways to save some money.  For example, buying simple, healthy snacks for your kids over pricey store-bought packaged ones.  Have you seen the price of hummus?  Here are additional way to reduce your cost of living:

Manage Credit Cards

Lines of credit are useful.  Especially, in times of financial difficulty.  However, it can be easy to lean on them a bit too much.  Doing so, could end up costing you more than it has to.  Many companies offer a helpful perk of transferring your balance from your current card to theirs.  Additionally, some offer no interest or lower interests for a few months, so it’s worth looking into. The window of time without payments  and/or added interest could be very beneficial in helping you catch up on bills.  You can even use the extra money that you’ve saved  for a rainy day or emergency fund.

Cut Extra Services

Many membership based services lure people in with a free service for a certain amount of time or another appealing offer.  After the trial window, you might find yourself paying money each month to a service you don’t really use.  If it’s something that legitimately benefits your family, then by all means take advantage of it.  On the other hand, if it’s costing you even a small amount of money each month, and you won’t really miss it, cut the proverbial cord.  What you will save can help reduce your cost of living, versus rationalizing it as inexpensive fee each month.

Save When You Can

Another way to reduce your cost of living is to set aside 10% of your net pay.  The following year you’ll be able to start buying food or even services in bulk. This will cut down on your grocery bill.  You can get a better price on the cost per roll for toilet paper by buying it in a bulk package.  Even phone service providers are now offering a cheaper price per month, if you buy several months at once.  Unfortunately, the problem is that it costs more up front.  Oftentimes, people just can’t afford that initial upfront cost. By making a few cuts, you may be able to afford it the following year.

Finances can be stressful, but with a bit of strategy to reduce your cost living, the stress-relief alone is well worth it.
