Backyard Bird Nesting Materials You Can Provide

Today, I’m sharing tips on backyard bird nesting materials. Backyard birds are arriving, and looking for a mate.  They will breed tiny little birdies, so they will need bird nesting materials to build a home for their family.  Some backyard birds use mud to build their nest others need items that you have in your home to assist them.

Backyard Bird Nesting Material:

  • Twigs or sticks
  • Dead leaves
  • Grass clippings or dead grass
  • Yarn, string or thread
  • Human hair
  • Pine needles
  • Straw or other plant stems
  • Tree Bark
  • Shredded paper
  • Broom bristles or mop string
  • Cotton balls
  • feathers

Birds that need help building their nest:

Robins – Dead grass and twigs are great material to leave for Robin’s to build their nest.

Black-capped Chickadee –  Moss and animal fur will assist Black-capped Chickadees.

Carolina Wren –  Twigs, grass, weeds, leaves, moss, pine needles, bits of bark, hair, string, and feathers.

Dark-eyed Junco – Leaves, moss and small roots are great nesting material for the Dark-eyed Junco

House Finch – Burlap, newspaper shreds, coconut fiber, and shreds of facial tissue are good nesting material for Finches.

Gray Catbird – Gray Catbirds love to use twigs, weeds, grass, leaves, and sometimes pieces of trash to build their nest.

Northern Cardinal –  Twigs, grapevine bark, dried grass, stems, rootlets, and pine needles are the preferred material for the Northern Cardinal.

Mockingbird – Dead twigs, grasses, leaves, trash, bits of plastic, and aluminum foil are great material for a Mockingbird’s nest.

backyard bird nesting material

Red-Winged Blackbird – Mud, grass or marsh vegetation and wet leaves.

Tufted Tit Mouse –  Hair, fur, wool, and cotton are loved by Tufted Tit Mouse.

Mourning Dove – Twigs, grass, weeds and pine needles are great material for Mourning Doves.  I have a row of pine trees behind my house, so I provide plenty of pine needs for them. However, I did have one nest in my Alberta Spruce tree.

Baltimore Orioles – Grass, strips of grapevine bark, wool, and horsehair are loved by Orioles when building their nests.

Blue Jays – Paper towels, tissues, candy wrappers and pieces of cloth are perfect.  Also twigs, bark, moss, and other man-made materials can be used.  Mud is used as a mortar.

Blue Birds – Grass, pine needles, straw, hair and sometimes feathers.

So, you can place the backyard bird nesting materials in a basket, an expensive suet feeder, or in tree crevices. Furthermore, place string on shrubs/bushes and more.  Also, I use a suet feeder that I had hanging around.  I normally place suet cakes in the feeder during the winter.  However, I also use it in the spring to house the nesting material.

Finally, find a place where your kids can watch the birds remove the materials from a window with a great pair of binoculars. I have mine placed in a Dogwood Tree in my front yard.  You can check out the list of best kids binoculars at globo surf.

What to Pack for Disney World Parks

Today, I’m sharing travel tips on what to pack for a trip to Disney World.  We spent a week in Orlando last December for my grandson’s ESPN Wide Word of Sports Disney football champion game.  We decided to hang out at Disney for a few days while we were there.  Fortunately, we’ll be returning December 2019. The weather was perfect for hanging out in the parks.   The last time we traveled to Disney, it was in August.  Never, ever again.  I simply can’t take that kind of heat unless I can wade into the ocean.  I’m adopting December.

First, I recommend carrying a backpack.  I stick my backpack in my luggage, and pack it when we’re heading to the park.  Here are a few items that I find to be essentials when heading out.  Especially, if you have kids:

Disney Tips

Poncho – You never know when you will encounter a shower or pouring down rain.  Luckily, we weren’t at the parks when we encountered pouring rain for hours.  This is when card or board games come in handy.  I grabbed a few at the Dollar Tree.  It’s easier than trying to carry raincoats for the kids.

Sunscreen – Even though it’s cloudy you should still protect your skin.  I apply a layer before we head out to the park and once again if the sun becomes hot.

Cooling Towel – A friend of mine gave me a cooling towel to use when I’m working in my garden.  I pack mine when I’m heading to the beach or an amusement park.  Disney was no exception.  I pulled it out a few times to cool off and get refreshed.  You can moisten it in the ladies room with cold water.  It is truly a treat if the weather is hot.  It’s great for cooling the kids down too.

Hand Sanitizer – You can never have too much hand sanitizer.  It’s great after touching the rides, handles or other areas utilized by people in the area.  If the kids want a treat or drink, I make them use the hand sanitizer.  If we have reservations to dine, I pass the hand sanitizer or head to the restroom to wash our hands.

Water Bottles – Head to the Dollar Tree and pick up a few Disney themed water bottles.  I fill ours with bottled water before he head to the park.  Most vendors will give you free water and ice if you ask.

Phone Charger – We found charging areas throughout the park.  So, don’t forget your charger.  Especially, if you use your phone to take pictures.  Most importantly, you may need it for emergency calls or to check your emails.

Snacks – Eating in the park can get expensive.  So, I carry snacks to help off-set the costs of the food expense in the park.  Sometimes the kids just need a little break and only want a juice box or peanut butter crackers.  They want to spend their time hunting Disney Characters or getting on the rides.  So grab a few packs of crackers and small juice boxes to add to your backpack.

Disney Itinerary – If you have a meal plan and have made reservations at various restaurants print out your itinerary or make sure you access the My Disney app.  You can check out where you’re supposed to be and when.

Disney World Tips

Aleve or Tylenol – I have a tendency to get a head-ache from the sun at times.  Aleve will usually take care of the problem for me.  It’s also great for back-aches.  Kid’s Tylenol is perfect for headaches or aches and pains too.

Band Aids – Great for knee scrapes or other accidents.

Wipes – I always carry a travel pack of hand wipes.  They’re great for wiping off hands along your journey in the park too.

Camera Battery Charger –  Be sure to charge your camera battery before you leave for the park or bring your charger with you.  There’s nothing worst than wanting to capturing a moment, and your batter dies.

Last, my list on what to pack for Disney World is not all inclusive.  However, it’s a great start.  You may also like Roll Out the Red Carpet When Planning a Disney Trip

The Importance of Encouraging Children to Learn

When you were a child your parents would always emphasize the importance of going to school, remember?  Now that you are a parent yourself it is part of your nature to encourage your little ones to always do their best.  Learning is a magic part of life.  So, you will want to immerse your kids into the world of learning.  When it comes to educational activities, start encouraging children to learn.  Here are a few parenting tips, when encouraging children to learn:

Kids Educational Tips

Sometimes Kids Need an Extra Push

It is very important to work with your children when they don’t feel confident in a certain subject.  It is not uncommon for your child to have a subject they truly hate.  So, it’s your job to make them love it again.  If you are looking for a way to help your youngster solve fractions, check out these equivalent fractions math worksheets.  Enhance their understanding of tricky topics and allow them to grow in confidence with a helping hand.

tips on educating children

Don’t Let Them Get Behind

It is very difficult to keep on top of all the homework and projects your child is given daily.  Try to encourage your child to tell you about their homework each evening.   This will enable you to keep an eye on their progress. If you suspect they are lagging behind, don’t be afraid to talk to them or their teacher. They might not understand the project or they could just need a gentle nudge in the right direction.

educational tips for kids

They Will Adopt a Good Work Ethic from a Young Age

When your child knows how to conduct themselves in school, they will start to form good habits over time. Conscientious children will become more reliable employees once they enter the working world.  So, encourage them to develop these skills early.

Education Will Instill Discipline

School will not only help your kid to become smarter, but it will also instill discipline into the most rambunctious little ones. Whether they have to wear a school uniform or refer to the teacher by a certain name, this will help to keep your children in line. Never underestimate how school can shape your child’s manners and behavior.   There is only so much you can do at home to support them.  As a result, their school life plays a huge role in their development.

Believe it or not, school life shapes who we are as a person from a very young age.  When your child goes to school they are exposed to people they might never have met before.  They also have a sponge like mind that can absorb information easily.  Use this process as a chance for your children to have a head start in school and make the most of the educational environment they have been given.

Sunday's Best Linkup

I wanted to take the time to wish each of you a Happy Easter!  My mother earned her wings Monday, April 15.  So, we will be extending our break from Sunday’s Best Linkup so I can grieve and prepare for her Home Going Celebration.  She lived a long life, 80 years young, and fought a good fight until the end.

She leaves behind 7 children, 1 step son, 3 sisters, 3 brothers,  30 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.  And, too many nieces, nephews and cousins to count.  What a legacy!

I hope that each of you have A Happy Easter and a blessed week. We will return April 27 with a new theme.  So please come back and join the party. Thanks for understanding!

How to Build Confidence in Your Relationships

Are you built on a solid foundation?  Recently, I had a conversation about being successful in relationships and in life.  I remembered a quote from many years ago, “If it’s not build on the right foundation it won’t stand.”  I always believed the quote was so fitting, especially when it pertains to relationships.   I started thinking about the many people that I’ve encountered over the course of the years.  Some of my relationships/friendships have withstood the test of time and some were temporary.  I know that those that didn’t last weren’t build on the right foundation, at least not for me.   Today, I’m going to share a few tips that will help empower you and teach you how to build confidence in your relationships.

self-confidence tips

I see my house, me, as having 3 major components. The first is my foundation. My foundation is what keeps me standing.  It’s what allows me to bend, but not break. It’s what allows me to be able to weather storms when they hit. My foundation is my values that I’ve worked to develop over the years.  My values change, but they have always allowed me to remain steadfast and not waiver.  These tips will teach you how to build confidence in your relationships:

  • Assertive – I have learned to assert myself over the course of the years.  I’ve worked on speaking my mind, but doing it in a tactful way.
  • Open-minded – I’ve learned to accept people for who they are. They may not think the way I do and they may not live their life the way I do, but I’ve learned to let people be people.  I don’t need to socialize, be friends or have a relationship with them.  People are going to be who they are and I just don’t expend time and energy trying to change one thing about them.  I don’t sleep with them nor do I depend on  them for my lively hood, so they can kick rocks.  I just remove myself and continue with my life.
  • Faith – It’s important that I believe in someone other than myself and I never waiver from my Faith.
  • Self-Reliance – Self-reliance is important to me and one that I don’t waiver from.  I want to be able to sustain me and mine, and never have to rely on other people to keep a roof over my head, feed, cloth or sustain me in anyway unless it’s my husband.  Since I don’t have one, I work to take care of me.  I have the ability to do just that, so why should I take advantage of other people to do what I can do for myself.  If I’m going to teach others to be self-reliant, I must practice what I preach.  This tip is imperative when thinking about how to build confidence.
  • Honesty – Another value that I will not waiver on.  I believe that a person’s word is their bond.  If you can’t live up to your words, it falls into the same category as being unreliable. You can’t be trusted, so what’s the point.
  • Diligence – Remain steadfast and never give up.  This attitude will lead to you achieving your goals and ultimately your success.
  • Resourceful –  You must build resources in order to be successful.  In my opinion, you build resources so you can build comrade and create great things together or assist one another in reaching a common goal.
  • Real – The only fake thing that I like is the gel coating on my nails.  Other than that, I’m real and will remain real for the rest of my life.  If you can’t be real, you can’t show people who you really are.  You can count on what I say, and you can count on it being the truth.  At least my truth.

My second level is my frame.  I’m robust!  I’m thick enough where I can’t be snapped.  Within my frame is my goals, my decision making skills, my education and training.  Basically, my repertoire. My skills for survival and success.  The lessons and skills that I use to raise and assist my family as well as mentor and lead others.  I work continuously to enhance these skills.  The world changes constantly, so it’s important that we all stay on our game.

Education is the key to success.  It doesn’t have to be a formal education, you can educate yourself through on-line courses.  Furthermore, I believe life is the greatest teacher.   There are many who have been successful without a college degree.  Additionally, you don’t have to have a 4 year degree to be successful either.   You can obtain an Associates and do great things in your life.  It’s all about your ability to seek and obtain.

Most importantly, my frame includes my personality and how I see the world.  My approach to life and my belief system.  I have set high standards for myself.  And, I work everyday to maintain what I have accomplished and continue to reach for what I haven’t.

Last is my frame out.  How I present myself, my frame and my values to the world.  You can acquire education and possess skills, but if you can’t put it together for the benefit of yourself, your family and make a contribution to society what good is it.  I’m thankful that I have worked toward everything that I have.  It empowers me to assist others in receiving theirs as well.   When you feel good about yourself, the sky is the limit.

How to build confidence in your relationships is something to ponder?  What is your foundation built on and what do you include in your frame out? Everyone doesn’t have to be built on the same foundation nor do we have to have the same frame or frame out.  That’s what makes us individuals.  Just make sure that your foundation is solid and it won’t crack when you encounter a storm.

How to Deal with Teens and Respond Appropriately

The idea that all parents are going to encounter a rebellious teen is far from the truth. Certain teens are easier to deal with than others.  Even within the same family system.  So, we have parenting tips on how to deal with teens in a constructive way.  Regardless of the struggle with your teen, you want them to make decisions that won’t have a negative impact on their future.  This pertains to things like driving if they have been drinking or being on either side of a teen pregnancy.

The best thing that we can do as parents is to be as involved in their lives without being overbearing.  Additionally, this helps a parent recognize if their teen’s moods or behaviors are changing.  This could be signs that they are having trouble at school, experiencing emotional problems, or having trouble in their personal relationships. The following are problems parents can encounter with teens.

raising teens

Grades Are Plummeting

One of the first signs of a problem with a teen is that of their grades dropping. This is not the time to start accusing your teen of anything, but rather ask why their grades are falling.  Often times this is a sign of something like bullying or even substance abuse.  However, there is a chance that your teen is not living up to their potential and might need extra help in school.  Furthermore, teachers who are not of the highest quality just need their students to pass the standardized test rather learn the material.  Getting the students to pass the standardized test is all that is needed for job security.  Check the on-line portals to ensure your student is completing assignments and studying for tests.

Practicing Unsafe Sex

Practicing unsafe sex can lead to various diseases as well as pregnancy. Bringing a child into the world is nothing a teen should have to deal with.  Birth control and other types of contraception are easy to obtain.  Consider options when you’re wondering how to deal with teens. Also, setting ground rules is important.  Don’t allow the significant other of your teen to sleep over.  This is simply asking for trouble. Educate your teen about safe sex.  Remember, preaching abstinence might lead them to avoid birth control because they want to discuss sex with you.

tips on teens

Drug Use

Drug use can be tough to detect if your teen makes a beeline for their room once they arrive home.  The last thing that you want as a parent is to figure out your teen is on drugs.  But, their addiction is now out of control. Marijuana probably is not going to ruin your teen’s life unless they are arrested for possession of the drug.  Marijuana can impact the growing brain negatively.  So, educate your teen on marijuana.  It is widely available, especially in states where recreational use is legal.  Drug testing a teen that you suspect of drug use can be done.  Home tests are affordable, and they can help keep your teen from falling into a life of destruction.

Alcohol Abuse

Alcohol abuse can impact a person of any age, religion, race, or gender as well as impacts all levels of the socioeconomic ladder.  Fortunately, alcohol can be easier for a parent to detect due to the smell and impact it has on an individual.  The one thing that you need to consider if your teen has been drinking daily is a supervised detox. The last thing you want is your teen to have a seizure due to the effects of stopping daily alcohol use immediately. Take the time to talk to your teen about how alcohol abuse can impact them now and in the future.

Teen Arrest Jeopardizing Future

If your teen is arrested this is not the time to show them tough love.  Depending on their age, certain arrests can impact their future.  A drug related arrest can lead to a student who has been accepted into a college or university having their admission revoked.  For time arrests for a teen with the right lawyer, it is possible that your teen can enter drug education program or outpatient rehab.  Additionally, they may have the offense wiped from their record.

Noll Law Office, a criminal defense lawyer in Springfield, IL notes “You need to know that the attorney you hire has the training, knowledge and experience to defend you or your loved ones. When your future is at risk, there is no alternative but to obtain the best criminal defense lawyer available.”  An arrest can be a wakeup call for your teen.  But, do not let their arrest impact the rest of their life if you can help it!

This is just a shot list on how to deal with teens.  React with a plan in mind rather than flying off the handle.  You should implement this response even if your teen does need a good verbal reprimand.  The teenage years only last a while.  As a result, make sure that you help set your teen up for success in life.

Last, congratulations to our featured bloggers! All of the posts were great, and we deeply appreciate each of you participating on Sunday’s Best Linkup. We have so many great posts that it gets difficult to choose a featured blogger. Finally, your hosts would like to invite all of you back to link up your post(s) again. We could select your post next week! Finally, while you’re here take a minute to visit these great blogs. It’s a great way to meet and connect with new bloggers. Be sure to PIN or share any posts that you like, we all appreciate a little love and be sure to connect with others on social media.

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!
