Parenting Tips on Understanding Your Child’s Needs

No matter how old your children are you are always looking for ways to understand them.  As a parent, your goal is to raise a happy, healthy, well-rounded  and independent human being.  One who has the ability to thrive at everything in life. You want your kids to grow up with the life skills you were taught and so much more.  This can only be done when you truly understand your individual child’s needs.  So, today we’re sharing parenting tips on Understanding Your Child’s Needs.

understanding your child's needs

Every child is completely unique in their development and behavior.  So, there will never be a one size fits all approach.  As a mother you will be thrown a lot of curveballs during your parenting lifespan.  And, you won’t always know the best approach to take.  Learn how to listen to your child and tailor your actions to suit their needs.  Communication is absolutely essential when you are a parent.  It gives you the ability to solve their problems and raise them to be vibrant and bright youngsters.  Here are some of the challenges you might face during your parenting journey and understanding your child’s needs:

You Always Want to Protect Them

Every parent goes through the struggle of wanting to shield their child from every potential danger.  Technology is scarily popular amongst young adolescents. So, you might feel slightly out of control with this phenomenon in your lives. Luckily, with iCloud, you can monitor phone calls, texts and photographs on your child’s phone without invading their privacy too much. You want to be able to trust them implicitly, but you also want to do everything in your power to protect them. Find a balance, and you will have peace of mind when it comes to technology.

Dealing with Behavioral Difficulties

Raising a child with ADHD or autism can bring many hurdles to overcome.  Learning to deal with challenging behavior will become second nature to you eventually.  But, it can feel like a huge mountain to climb initially.  Remember that your child’s behavior is no reflection on you as a parent. You will learn to deal with certain triggers in a way that works for you both.  Seek professional advice if you are not understanding your child’s needs.

Monitoring Their Development

If your child isn’t developing as quickly as other kids, you can feel overwhelmed.  It is very easy to compare your child to others, but that really won’t help the situation.  As long as you are able to monitor and understand your child’s needs, this is all you should concern yourself with.  Your family doctor will be able to advise you on any signs that are truly concerning.  So, you should never jump to conclusions without seeking professional help.

Keeping Them Healthy

Before you had children you vowed never to give them sweets, chocolate or fizzy drinks.  However, you can’t keep them away from the bad stuff! Keeping your child healthy is obviously at the forefront of your mind, but you shouldn’t get too overprotective when it comes to their diet. As long as they are getting a wide range of food groups such as protein, carbohydrates and good fats, you shouldn’t worry about the odd sweet treat here and there.

The Communication Barrier

As your child learns to talk you will find it easier and easier to communicate with them. You might actually start to miss the days when they were peaceful and quiet as a tiny baby! Their vocabulary will develop at an alarming rate and your language will definitely have an impact on how much they pick up on.  As they grow into their teenage years they will suddenly revert back to a time where talking is the hardest thing in the world! It sometimes takes a miracle to get a conversation out of a grumpy teen, but this will soon pass.

Overwhelming Advice from Outsiders

When somebody else thinks they know your child better than you do, it can be quite upsetting. Whether you have a new baby or a developing teenager, there will always be someone out there who wants to give you unsolicited advice.  Unfortunately, this happens to the best of us and you need to learn to take it with a grain of salt. You will always know what is best for your child.  So, don’t listen to people who have anything negative to say about your parenting skills.

understanding your child's needs

Letting them Grow Up

It can be very difficult for many of us to master, but allowing our children to grow up is part of our life. They need to grow up in order to start their own life and gain their independence. Letting them go will always be difficult, but your job as a parent will never be over. Even when they have children themselves, they will need your help and advice more than ever. Understand that when it is time to loosen the reins, you will always be well respected as their parent.

It can be very difficult to accept that your child has to grow up.  Especially, when it seems they were only babies a few weeks ago! Their life will flash before you in a split second, so make sure you cherish every moment with them. When they do start to grow up and show their independence, you will need to step back from time to time. You won’t always find it easy to let go and give them freedom, but it can do them a world of good.

There are ways to regain some elements of control, but you should pick and choose your battles wisely. Every mother will go through a different journey when raising their children, but you will always know what is best for yours. Don’t listen to people who have no experience in the field of parenting and always strive to do the best you can during this adventurous time in your life.  We hope that you will find our tips on understanding your child’s needs beneficial.

How to Take Memorable Vacation Photos

Today, I’m sharing travel tips on vacation photos.  When you go on vacation, you make memories that will last a lifetime.  What better way to document those memories than to take great photos?  You can store them in an album, put them on your wall or even give them as gifts to everyone who vacationed with you.

memorable vacation photos

Here’s a few tips on how to take memorable vacation photos:

Tell a Story

The most engaging photos will always tell a story. Try and take photos of any key moments so that you can build a narrative of your journey.  For example, take a photograph of your suitcase before you go.  Additionally, take a photograph of the plane or train you are travelling on.  Furthermore, when  you have reached your destination take a photo.  This will tell a story and it will also show how you got from point A to point B.

Vacation Photos

Take your Camera Everywhere

Always have a camera within arm’s reach. It doesn’t matter if you use the camera on your smartphone, the goal is to capture the moments.  It may also be worth taking some kind of waterproof carry case with you.  A down pour could occur any moment. If you are taking your smartphone with you then check out this link: https://setapp.com/how-to/set-up-icloud-mail-on-your-mac.  It givens information on how you can save your photos to the cloud or you can email them to yourself instead.

Timer

If you are traveling with a group then you will know how annoying it can be to always have one person left out of the vacation photos.  If you want to get around this dilemma, use a selfie stick.  Or, put your camera on a timer.  Either options will allow everyone to be in the same shot and you don’t have to worry about leaving anyone out. If you are not sure how long to set the timer for, then 10 seconds is usually a great starting point. This gives everyone the chance to get in the right pose, and it also stops you from having to rush too much.

Scenic Shots

The last thing that you want to do is fill your vacation album with a ton of scenic photos. Nobody wants to see a huge range of photos that are all mediocre. If you want to avoid this, then only take a photo when you see a striking landscape. You might also want to get other people in front of the camera too so that you can get the ultimate travel photo.

memorable vacation photos

Local Wildlife

If you are vacationing somewhere that has super unique wildlife, then you need to bring the right gear with you.  A powerful zoom function will go a long way.  It will help you capture birds, and other wildlife that you may come across. This can help make memorable vacation photos.

8 Effective Ways to Plan Your Busy Months

We all have those busy months when we just can’t seem to get enough done in a single day.  Between juggling a career, taking care of our family, and managing household duties, something always seems to get left behind.   With a little planning, maybe we can get everything done during our busiest months!   Today, we’re sharing parenting tips on effective ways to plan for your busy months and accomplish your goals:

ways to plan

Start With The Priorities

On the off chance that you get too busy to accomplish certain tasks each day or week, make sure that you focus on the priorities,  Is there a big party or project you need to focus on? Are there home maintenance tasks that must be taken care of? Consider what is most important and put those at the top of your list.

Don’t Do What Others Can

Whether you’re at home or at the office, you have a team ready and waiting to help you. Delegate smaller task to your tribe so that you can focus on tasks that only you can accomplish.

Multi-task Strategically

Take advantage of online shopping, automatic ordering, and special plans like a home warranty to take care of home maintenance while you are focusing on more important things.  As a result, you can get the house cleaned or focus on meal planning.  Furthermore, take advantage of having your groceries and other items delivered to your door.

Discover the Low Hanging Fruits

Another effective ways to plan tips is to consider the smaller tasks that you can take on while you’re taking a mental break from a big project. Did you know that cleaning actually helps clear your mind?  It gets those creative juices flowing.   If you’re starting to feel burned out on a single task, jump to a different task so you can refocus.

Avoid Distractions

Having the television playing in the background may seem like a great idea.  Or, some other background noise while you’re working.  However,  you’d be surprised at how many times your eyes drift over to the television.  It kills precious time that could have been spent finishing work. Consider what distracts you on a daily basis and eliminate it for your busy month.

planning tips

Reorganize Your Days

If you wake up each morning and seem to be dragging your feet, but you get your second wind at night, be sure to plan accordingly.  Just because you want to prioritize your tasks doesn’t mean they need to be the first items to be accomplished.  Tackle your priorities when you feel the most energized, and tackle the smaller tasks when you are low energy.

Consider Telecommuting

Many companies offer a number of days you can work from home or short periods of time to work remotely. Consider your options for working remotely.  Plan to stay at home and get those smaller tasks done.  You’ll get your work done ten-fold, plus you will save a ton of time by not having to travel to the office.

 planning tips

Take It Easy On Yourself

The amount of time you spend beating yourself up because you didn’t get to cross item off your list could be spent focusing on other tasks.  Remember, you’re only human.  So, take a breath and focus on the day ahead.

We hope that you find our tips on effective ways to plan beneficial.

Parenting Tips On Teaching Your Children Life Skills

Preparing our children to go out into the world is an essential part of raising them.  So many children are not prepared to survive in the big world that awaits them.  We depend on our school systems to educate our children; however, their education most also come from their home life.  Teaching children to be responsible and a functional human being is a part of parenting.   So, get them off the electronics and start preparing them for life.  Today, we’re sharing parenting tips on teaching children life skills.

life skills

We have 25 tips on what children should have learned  when they enter adulthood.  Teaching them early and at home will eliminate the stress and strain of not knowing or having sufficient skills to survive.  Lets start on some ideas for teaching children life skills.

  • Money Management –  Learning how to balance a check book and management money is a necessary life skill.
  • Organizational Skills – Getting organized and being tidy is a good habit to have.  Especially, if you have roommates during college or after college.  Nobody wants to live with a slob.
  • How to Cook – Teaching both our sons and daughters is a great way to put them on the road to healthy eating.  Preparing healthy meals eliminates the need to order pizza and fast food.  It’s a great skill to have when married with children.
  • Assertive Skills – Being able to express and defend yourself with yelling and violence is a necessary skill.  At some point, it will be needed.
  • How to Clean –  Being clean is another life skill everyone needs.  Being unclean affects your emotional and physical health.
  • How to Mow Grass – Mowing should be a skill taught at home.  Teens should be given this chore as a part of home maintenance.  It will come in handy once they purchase their own.
  • How to Find Employment – Teach your child the importance of making their own money, but also how to apply for a job.
  • How to Change a Tire – The number of teens who don’t know how to change a tire is astounding.  These skills aren’t taught in high school, so teach them at home.  Make it part of the safe driving training.  Most importantly, don’t limit the training to your sons, our daughters should know too.
  • The Importance of Being Punctual – Teach your children the importance of being on time.  Showing up late for a job is unprofessional and showing up late for a date with the girls or friends is rude.
  • Be a Team Player – Being able to work individually is a good trait, but so is being able to work as a team member.  Playing organized sports is a great way to learn this skill.
  • CPR –  Everyone should learn CPR.  It’s a live saving skill.

life skills

  • How to Swim –  If your children are going to attend pool parties or join friends on the beach or other vacation destinations, it’s imperative that they learn how to swim.
  • Good Manners – Also, good manners  is a life skill that will used and needed in everyday conversation as well as on the job.
  • How to Do Laundry – Learning how to wash and iron clothing is a necessary skill.  Looking unkempt on the job or in your everyday life is not a good trait.  Besides, when you look good you feel good.
  • The Importance of Being Positive – A positive attitude is more attractive than a negative one.
  • To Have Faith – We all need to have faith and trust in someone greater than ourselves.
  • How to Drive – Never be dependent on anyone to get you from point A to B.  Being independent is a good thing.  Having a driver’s license will provide a means to getting to school, your job and social activities.
  • Accepting Failure – Unfortunately, life is filled with success and failures.  Accepting failures is as important as accepting the victories in life.
  • Have Integrity – Being honest, trustworthy, fair, and ethical are all traits that we should teach our children.

life skills

  • To Pray – Also, praying is our way of thanking God and asking for acceptance, forgiveness and guidance.
  • Be a Good Neighbor – Reach out to your neighbors, and your children will follow your example.
  • Volunteer – Teach your children the importance of volunteering in the community.
  • Stay Active – Staying active is essential to your health.  Take a walk as a family, ride a bike, obtain a gym membership are few examples.
  • Get a Hobby – Having a hobby is important.  Doing things that you love brings joy, reduces stress and relaxes you.
  •  Have a Sense of Humor – We must learn to laugh at ourselves and at the world.  It will make living life much easier.

Last, I hope that you are teaching your children these life skills.  We can no longer depend on our school system to raise our children.  Most importantly, we must step up and ensure they are ready to enter the world as an adult.

16 Ways to Celebrate Great Outdoors Month

Did you know that June is Great Outdoors Month?  Yes, school will be over for the summer and the kids will need to be occupied.  The Great Outdoors Month is opportunity to escape being inside.  So, today I’m sharing parenting tips on the Great Outdoors Month and activities for kids.  It’s a great way to get them off the electronics.  Furthermore, it’s a great to get them to exercise, blow off steam from the stresses of the school year and bond as a family.  Here we go:

National Outdoors Month

Bike Riding – Pull those bikes out of the garage and get your kids riding.  Encourage them to get the other neighborhood kids involved.  It’s a great way to get them to exercise and gives you a few moneys to exhale from having them for the summer.

Scavenger Hunt – Send them on a scavenger hunt.  Print our Summer Scavenger Hunt cards and let them explore and have fun.  Most of the items can be found in your backyard or neighborhood.

Chase Butterflies  – Purchase a few butterfly nets and let them run around the yard chasing butterflies.

Garden  – Introduce your children to nature.  Let them plant a few vegetables or a butter fly garden.

Plan a Picnic –  Next, grab your picnic and fill it with sandwiches, fruits, and drinks and spend time with the kids.  It gets them out the house, and allows you to bond with them.  You can spread out a blanket in the backyard or park.  Make it simple.

Great Outdoors Month

Hike – Take a hike through a local park or walk around the neighborhood.

Birdwatch – Head to one of your local reserves or your own backyard.  Birdwatching in your own backyard can be a wonderful experience.  It allows the kids to see what birds are native to your area and which ones they would like to lure to the feeders.

Horseback Riding –  Also, check out your local equestrian center for rates on an hour of horseback riding.  This may be a good time for the kids to take riding lessons.

Paddle Boating – Head to your local park, and spend some time on the water paddle boating.  Don’t forget your life jackets and the safety rules.

Camping – Planning a camping trip complete with tents and outdoor cooking with the kids.

Great Outdoors Month

Fishing – Take the kids fishing.  You can fry them up or throw them back.  Either way, the kids will have a great time.

Outdoor Movies – Also, set up a movie night and let the kids enjoy the stars and moon while watching one of their favorite movies.

Star Watching – If you kids love to watch the stars, bring out the telescope.  It’s a great way to look at the stars and learn about astrology as a family.

White Water Rafting –  Check your area to see if this activity is being offered.  It’s big in my area!

Great Outdoors Month

River Tubing –  Take a journey along your local river or lake and just enjoy the day as a family.

Go Karts – Last, my grandson and his friends love the Go Kart track.  It’s a nice family activity.

Finally, get creative.  The goal is to get outside and get physical.  Enjoy nature and make a commitment to get off the phone and get outside.  The possibilities on finding activities for the kids to do during the Great Outdoors Month is endless.   You may also like:  Camping Injuries and How to Avoid Them.

Tips On Decorating a Home Gallery

Large expanses of plain wall are ideal to display works of art.  And, if you are thinking of creating a wall gallery in your home, there are a few important things to consider.  Colors, for example, can be either complimentary or contrasting.  And, the size of your artwork needs to be in proportion with the room.  Here are a few additional tips on decorating a home gallery.

Light Color Wall

The gallery wall might be stark white, or a light beige, as a light background highlights the art more effectively.  Furthermore, it helps to showcase the art features.  And, with the right spotlights and some LED units, you can further highlight main features. You could have a textured finish to the wall, which really does create the perfect background for wall art.  For example, textured plaster or concrete with a matte finish would work, especially with some colored LED spots.

Other Art Forms

You can combine wall prints and antique items.   Perhaps a military chest, or a vintage writing desk that sits against the wall.  A pair of antique Victorian wall mirrors might be the ideal way to boost the natural lighting.  And, with a couple of Victorian wall lamps, you have the perfect illumination.

Rich Color Contrasts

You can add splashes of rich, deep color, but keep it minimal.  For example, a lampshade or even a picture frame can be a bright color.  It gives the wall some variation outside of the two main colors.  Also, don’t be afraid to experiment.  That’s how many interior designers find the right color combinations, and by using a piece of card that has the exact color, you can place this in the room and see for yourself.  Start with your base color, and add items one at a time.  After while, you will have your furniture in place and can look at wall art and other forms of art, such as statues and sculptures.

Online Solutions

Once you are ready to acquire some wall art, look no further than the Internet.  There are many websites that sell all forms of wall art. Prints, abstracts and portraits, to name but a few, and prices are very reasonable too.

If you are on the look-out for a few antique items to enhance the room, the online antique dealer has an extensive catalogue of genuine antique and vintage pieces.  If you are looking for something specific, the online dealer can certainly source the item on your behalf. If you forge an alliance with a reputable online antique dealer, he can always help you when you are looking for a specific item.  And, if he doesn’t have what you’re looking for, he can soon find it.  Mixing old and new furniture is very trendy at the moment, and most people prefer to add a few small antique or vintage pieces to a modern setting, which brings a nice balance.

Displaying art on a single wall brings in a new dimension to the ambience.  With some trial and error, you will eventually decide on the right combination to create a wall gallery that will be the main feature in your home.  So, we hope you find our tips on decorating a home gallery beneficial.  You may also like Tips for Designing a Child’s Bedroom.

How to Remove Allergens From Your Flooring

Today, we’re sharing tips on how to remove allergens from your floors. When the warmer breezes of April and May prompt you to open your windows and get all the gunky and stuffiness of winter out, it’s time for your spring clean. You may have many annual traditions when it comes to cleaning in the spring such as washing windows, dusting the ceiling fans and beating out area rugs.  However, it’s important to pay special attention to your flooring in order to keep allergens and related particles from building up.

While spring means lovely trees and flowers blooming, it can also cause terrible allergies to invade your home. By cleaning your floors properly, you can avoid some of the worst of the pollen or mold incursion.

How to Remove Allergens from Flooring:

For Hardwood

how to remove allergens

Cleaning your hardwood floors regularly is the best way to remove allergens from your flooring.  Make sure you sweep and mop with a damp (but not saturated) cloth mop. Most hardwood floors just need a quick wipe with water, and for some you can use a vinegar and water mix or a very light soap like Bona.  Before you clean with any of these, make sure you test a part of your flooring in an out of the way place.

For Carpet

Wondering how to remove allergens from your carpet?  While carpet likely traps the most pollen of all your flooring options, it can be cleaned easily with a vacuum that has a quality filter. The filter keeps the allergens from spreading into the air. If, at the same time, you’ve been avoiding really scrubbing out carpet stains, there are many methods for eradicating various stain causes. You can try using this trick on most stained areas:

  • Get a bucket of warm water, some baking soda and some dish soap.
  • Sprinkle the stain with baking soda and then add about 1 tablespoon of dish soap for every 6-8 inches of stained carpeting.
  • Use a rag to move the mixture around until bubbles appear.
  • Gently scrub with a brush or towel using the warm water. Keeping the floor damp but not soaked.
  • Once dry, vacuum again.

For Cork flooring

While you might worry that cork would harbor more allergens because of its porous texture, cork is naturally antimicrobial, making it able to combat allergens like mold and mildew. If need be you can add a finish the further repels potential allergens. To keep your cork floor clean, use a damp mop once a week on it. If you want to use a cleaning product occasionally, make sure you use only recommended cork floor cleansers.

For Tile Flooring

Allergens do not easily adhere to tile, so simple cleaning with warm water is usually a good way to make sure you don’t have to worry about accumulation. That said, old grout can build up mold, so if you notice this happening, it might be time to re-grout.

Still Worried About Breathing Easily? Be Aware of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)

Unfortunately, many finishes and some flooring can contain volatile organic compounds that can affect your allergies as well. These are particularly prevalent in synthetic carpeting and vinyl as well as most industrial coating like varnish. These can give off particles that become vaporous and are known as pollutants that cause breathing trouble for some people. While off-gassing from these products is most prevalent directly after installation or refinishing, it can go on for months or even years. To avoid this on your floors, you can use water-based products or apply an encapsulating sealer designed to trap VOCs and prevent them from off-gassing into your home.

You want to be able to soak all the beauty of springtime and to have a clean house without sneezing every few seconds. By keeping your floors clear of allergens, you’ll be able to enjoy spring (and all that other cleaning) so much more.
