How to Encourage Kids to Make Healthy Choices

Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on how to encourage kids to make healthy choices. There is no denying that health and happiness go hand in hand. As a parent, you have the power to help your children develop healthy habits that will enhance their health and overall quality of life.

encourage kids to make healthy choices

Here are just a few ways to put them on a positive path:

Let them make choices at dinner time

Food is a major source of contention between children and parents across the globe.  However, if you’re willing to give your entire family a say in what goes on their plate it doesn’t have to be. Start by letting your kids help with shopping. With the price of food skyrocketing, you may have to get creative with your grocery budget.  Start by choosing seasonal produce from your local farmers market.  Give your kids their own basket and tasks.  For example, let them shop for fruit and vegetables with specific traits.  Your child could be on the lookout for all things orange (e.g., carrots, peppers or oranges).  Your ‘tween or teen can pick produce from plants like tomatoes or melons.

Limit their consumption of non-water beverages

In an ideal world, you and your children would drink only water or milk. But with so many choices, it’s almost impossible to avoid the occasional soda, sports drink or cup of hot cocoa.  Don’t keep these beverages in the house.  Instead, use fresh fruit to infuse water with flavor if your kids want a variety.   This cherry and lime water is a great recipe but you can experiment with any juicy piece of produce.

Prioritize physical activities

The amount of physical activity your children receive gets directly influences their risk of becoming obese as adults. The CDC states, “Regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence is important for promoting lifelong health and well-being”.  It prevents various health conditions. Even if you’re exhausted after a long day at work, spent 30 minutes playing outdoors or taking a walk around the block with the kids. Children learn by example and will mimic your behaviors. Make sure your actions encourage healthy choices.

Be open and honest about uncomfortable subjects

Sex, crime, natural disasters, terrorist attacks, death, drugs and alcohol are all things from which we would like to protect our children.  But, the reality is that these activities and events happen. By arming your children with information, you put them in a better position to say no to peer pressure.  Furthermore, they can avoid situations that could cause them harm.  Check out this article from the Conversation on these topics.

Don’t fix their mistakes

As much as you think they are perfect, your children will make mistakes. Let them. If your children never have a chance to fail, they will never learn coping or problem-solving skills. Be there to guide and keep them safe, but avoid the temptation to tell them they are wrong before try something new.  It’s hard to stand by and do nothing if your child is hurt, defeated, or sad.  But, navigating life’s ups and downs is part of the growing up process.  Overcoming their self-imposed obstacles helps them develop confidence.  Dr. Peggy Drexler stresses that you shouldn’t inhibit your child’s ability to grow in this capacity simply to eliminate your own worry.

While it’s up to you to make sure your kids are safe, healthy and well-balanced, you can’t make all of their decisions for them.  By allowing them an age-appropriate level of independence, setting a positive example, and giving them the opportunity to make and rectify their own mistakes, you will empower your children.  Use our tips on how to encourage kids to make healthy choices.  You will also help them the strength and confidence to make good decisions as they grow from helpless children to whole and healthy adults.

Best Sunflower Varieties for Wildlife

Today, I’m sharing backyard flower garden tips on best sunflower varieties for wildlife. Unfortunately,  the bird populations has declined over the years.  Pesticides and herbicides, the decline in insects, climate change and removal from their natural habitat are major factors in their decline.  Today, I’m going to share the best sunflower varieties to grow in your backyard garden to help sustain our wildlife.

sunflower varieties

There are other steps you can take to help sustain wildlife, but today we’re focusing on solely on sunflowers.  I add them to my vegetable garden every year.  I love opening my curtains in the morning and seeing their smiling faces.  Furthermore, I love it even more when I see my backyard birds feasting on the sunflower seeds.  If you don’t have a vegetable garden, add them along a fence line or in your flower gardens.

Sunflowers attract pollinators which include bees, butterflies, honey bees, wasps, moths, flies, and beetles.  We need pollinators to keep our ecosystem going.  There are some sunflowers that are produced to not attract pollinators.  Many gardeners do not want  pollen dropping on their tables and mantels when they cut sunflower bouquets.

Here’s a few of the Best Sunflower Varieties for wildlife:

Lemon Queen  – These beauties find a place in my garden every year.  I love the lighter color of the petals versus the regular yellow petals found on most sunflowers.   They are lovely planted among Autumn Beauty sunflowers.  The contrasting colors are stunning.

Velvet Queen – Another beauty that finds a place in my garden.  It’s sports deep red, almost burgundy colored petals.

Red Sun –  I’ve never grown this particular variety, but I try it in my 2020 summer vegetable garden.

Chocolate Cherry – This sunflower has deep, dark, reddish brown petals that look beautiful with any yellow/lemon sunflowers.  Plant a few.

Autumn Beauty – I have planted this variety, and I love it.  It has multi-color petals in colors of gold, orange, yellow, red, and burgundy.  It looks great with the deeper color sunflowers.

Evening Sun – Fortunately, this beauty goes into my garden every year.  I plant it close to the Lemon Queen for the color contrast.

Henry Wild – I’m not familiar with this variety, but it’s great with pollination so it’s alright with me.  I am going to do my homework, I may want to plant a few.

Russian Mammoth – So, I can’t live without this sunflower in my garden, and neither can my American Goldfinch.  It is massive.  The fence behind these Russian Mammoths is six feet.  I’ve had them grown as tall as 12 – 15 feet.

Earth Walker – I haven’t had good luck with the Earth Walker.  I planted a few this summer, but they failed to germinate.  I haven’t given up though.  I’ll try again in the upcoming growing season.

Mexican – Unfortunately, another variety that has failed to grown in my garden.  I’ll be trying this variety again too.  They’re lower than most sunflowers, they’ll make a nice border in front of some of the taller varieties.

Planting any of these sunflower varieties for wildlife habitats will help create or sustain them. Start browsing the internet or catalogues for seeds that interest you.  Make sure they sunflower varieties are good for pollination.  You may also like:  7 Uses for Sunflowers and Soak Up the Rain

Selecting Wedding Flowers for Your Special Day

With every year that comes and goes, there are new wedding flower packages that people seem to be falling in love with.  If you are struggling to decide what flowers to have for your special day, we have shopping tips on the selecting wedding flowers this year.

selecting wedding flowers

There is only one place to start, and this is with the classic trend.  This involves using white or ivory colored bouquets and flower arrangements that are combined with green leaves. This is the traditional style of wedding flowers, and it is back.  If you like the sound of these wedding flowers, you should look for traditional blooms, such as calla lilies and roses.  Also, you could group a selection of the same flower variety; for instance, Sweet Avalanche roses are popular when it comes to this trend.

Another popular trend is the ‘wild garden’ look, which involves an assortment of flowers.  These type of arrangements look like they have literally been picked from someone’s garden.  This means you can use a wide assortment of flowers and a mixture of colors, such as green, violet, bright yellow, fuchsia, and pale pink. A good place to start is with tulips, garden roses, and sweet peas. This creates a beautiful combination. The key is to ensure you keep things simple.  If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, check out how Zoysia Sod can help with making your out door venue beautiful.

Romantic luxe has been in high demand.  It has been a common theme of celebrity weddings over the past few years. This is all about high flower content in romantic colors, such as creams and pastels.

So, you will struggle to find a more popular wedding flower trend than pastels. Flowers in pastel shades are always in high demand, and this is because they have achieved that elusive timeless status. They are particularly popular whenever the weather starts to get warmer.  Pastel color bouquets and flower center pieces are in very high demand throughout the spring and summer.

selecting wedding flowers

The main reason so many people fall in love with pale and pastel-colored wedding flowers is that they have a soft, romantic quality about them.  These characteristics make them perfect for a loving, positive, and special day.  You have many options to choose from.  As a result, you can go for various themes and create a different feel for your big day.

For a quintessential country garden feel, large open flowers in soft and creamy shades are ideal. However, you can go for something with a touch of vibrancy. Ice cream shades, like pink, lemon, and peach have become exceptionally popular over the past few years, as they are fun and eye-catching yet elegant at the same time.  Get creative, the options are endless.

Bling Word Hair Pins Review

I was given the opportunity to purchase these  12 Piece Words Hair Pins, at a discount in exchange for a review.  Since my granddaughter is a diva and loves to wear hair bows and headbands with her outfits, I purchased these bling word hair pins.

First, if you make a purchase I may be compensated; however, there will no charge to you.  Sales from my blog are used to maintain Mother 2 Mother Blog.

hair pin reviews

Now, lets get to the review. I ordered the word hair pins and they arrived quickly.  I love Amazon Prime.  So, these hair  pins are the rage and they are adorable.  Celebrities and fashionistas alike are wearing them.  They are blingy, fun, stylish and make a fashion statement.  If you have a little diva, they are a must.  They would make a great birthday, Christmas  or just because gift.

The hair pins are individually wrapped inside a larger package.  I like this idea, they won’t rub against each other.  Reuse the  individual packages to house the hair pins after you take them out.  This will help keep the rhinestones in tact.  I will be giving these hair pins to my 8 year old granddaughter.  Teaching her to put the hair pins in back in the package may take more than a little patience though.  Just saying.

word hair pins

If you want bling, the rhinestone words will do just that.  The base of the pins are gold, which actually looks nice against the stones.

Next, the package contained 12 hair pins.  They were fun words like, dream, sweet, girls hope, queen, star and happy to name a few.  They’re a great way to help raise the self-esteem of any little girl too.  When you feel pretty, you feel good.  If you have more than 1 daughter, split the package or they can share.

word hair pin

Next, I tried one of the hair pins while my granddaughter looked on and snapped the picture.  The hair pins operate just like a bobby pin.  Honestly, I found some of them a little difficult to open and get into my hair.  However, with practice it may get easier.  I think my granddaughter will need a little help from her mommy to get them into her hair in the mornings.

But, you can wear the hair pins individually or together.  You can make combinations like Girls Hope or Sweet Dream.  Encourage your daughter or even you can get creative with the word hair pins.

Finally, I highly recommend the 12 Word Hair Pins, they are really cute. You may also like the Power Floss Dental Water Pic.

Tips on Creating a Wild Life Habitat

Now is a good time to start thinking about your backyard and if it has everything needed to create a wild life habitat.  If not, you can start putting together a plan to remedy the problem.  Today, I’m sharing backyard bird tips on creating a wild life habitat.  My goal is to create a habitat for backyard birds.  However, you can work towards creating a habitat for squirrels, deer, ducks and more.

There are four areas that you should focus on when creating your backyard wild life habitat.  Remember, you don’t have to incorporate every item listed below.  Strive to make it beautiful and an area that you enjoy watching too.  Here’s the areas:

creating a wild life habitat

Shelter

  • Wooded Area
  • Rock Pile
  • Evergreen Trees
  • Brush Pile
  • Log Pile
  • Shrubs
  • Ponds

You will need to provide at least two areas of shelter when creating a wild life habitat.  I provide bird houses, a log pile, and plenty of shrubs.  Fortunately, I also have a row of evergreens on my back property line.

Food Sources

  • Seeds from a plant
  • Berries
  • Twigs
  • Fruits
  • Suet
  • Feeders
  • Nuts

You will need to include at least three of these food sources.  I offer feeders, suet, nuts and seeds from sunflower plants and berries from a wild cherry tree.   Furthermore, I have black walnut trees on my property.  The squirrels stay busy gathering walnuts in the fall and stealing sunflower seeds and peanuts from the feeders in the winter.

You can also plant native plants, berry bushes and fruit trees to help create a wild life habitat too.

creating a wild life habitat

Water Sources

  • Bird bath
  • Lake Stream
  • Pond
  • Spring
  • Pool
  • Butterfly Puddle Area
  • Garden Pond
  • Create a Rain Garden

You will need to provide or have one of these sources.  I have several bird baths and a wet weather stream bed.  It usually runs in the spring if we’ve had lots of rain or a heavy snow fall.  I love when it’s running and so do the mallards.

Sustainable Practices

  • Use a Rain Barrel
  • Create a Rain Garden
  • Use Mulch in flower beds
  • Reduce Lawn Area
  • Use Native Plants
  • Compost
  • Eliminate Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides

I use several of these practices for my backyard garden and flower beds.  Mulch is used in my flower beds and I have two compost bins.  I also eliminated chemicals on my property.  I hope to incorporate a rain barrel in the spring to water my garden and plant more native shrubs.  Check your local Conservation Agency.  Sometimes, they give away free rain barrels.

Place your feeders, bird baths, waters and areas that you can observe and enjoy too.  It’s no fun working to create a beautiful yard, and than not enjoy it.  I love opening my curtains in the morning and enjoying nature throughout the day.  Check out some wild life magazines to get ideas or better yet use your creative eye and instincts.

DIY Pine Cone Fire Starters

Fall is here!  Today, I’m sharing tips on how to make pine cone fire starters.  It’s the perfect time for a roaring fire in the fireplace or fire pit.  Picture yourself sipping a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, making s’mores or roasting hot dogs with the kids, it doesn’t matter.  Just get the fire started.

They’re perfect for camping or a wood burning fire place or stove too.

Next, spend an afternoon searching for pinecones in your backyard or neighborhood’s.  My daughter has more pine cones than she could ever use in her yard, so I fill a basket when I visit.  If you’re not lucky enough to have access to pine cones, you can purchase them.  I used a variety of sizes in this batch.

You will also need:

how to start fires

How to Make Pine Cone Fire Starters:

  • Start simmering about 3 inches of water in a small pot.
  • While the water is heating, wrap a piece of wire around the bottom of each pine cone as shown below.   You will be use the wire to dip the pinecones into the wax.  I purchased the 20 gauge galvanized wire.  I prefer that weigh because its heavy enough to use on my wreaths for hanging, but also useful with other crafts.
  • Slowly add a pound of the wax pellets to the pot.  Allow the pellets to melt slowly and completely. Also, I used white pellets.  I like the softness of the white wax.  However, you may prefer yellow.
  • Place the pine cones on a cooling rack after you dip them into the wax.  I lined a cookie sheet with wax paper and placed a cooling rack on the cookie sheet.
  • Allow the wax to harden before placing the pine cones back into the wax.  I dipped each pine cone about 3 or 4 times.

The smaller pine cones shown below are from the Dollar General.  They were 12 for a $1.00 in the Christmas section, so I grabbed a few boxes to add to my pine cone stash.  They have strings wrapped around them because they are Christmas tree ornaments.  However,  I just removed the strings before dipping them into the wax.  I used an old spoon to place the smaller pine cones in the wax and to remove them from the pot.  But, you can wrap the wire around them too.

Once the wax hardened, I removed the wire.   I love how the wax varies on each pine cone.  I left some of the pine cones in the heated wax longer than others.  You can get creative and add glitter while the wax is hardening or a fragrance oil to the pine cones. I use fragrance oils because they’re stronger than essential oils.  Peppermint, Snickerdoodle, Cupcake, and Orange are a few of my favorites.

starting fires in fire places

I head to the Smoky Mountains at the end of October each year.  This is the wood burning fire place in the house where I relax for a week.  I’ll be taking this batch of pine cone fire starters to use when I want a roaring fire.  The weather is usually a little chilly, so the fire place is always a welcome feature.  Make a few batches for your next camping trip, backyard fire pit or fireplace.  You may also like:  Sea Shell Embellished Picture Frames.

Backyard Birds That Love Suet

Today, I’m sharing a few birding tips on backyard birds that love suet. Cold weather is around the corner.  Not all backyard birds migrate to warmer climates, so they will need help keeping warm and finding food.  One of the ways that you can help is offer foods that will keep them warm and fill their little tummies.   And, how you can help our feathered friends through the cold, winter months.

Backyard Bird Suet

First, here’s a list of backyard birds that love suet:

Woodpeckers

  • Downy Woodpeckers
  • Hairy Woodpecker
  • Northern Flicker
  • Pileated Woodpecker
  • Red-Bellied Woodpecker
  • Red-Headed Woodpecker

Small Birds

  • Black-Capped Chickadee
  • Carolina Wren
  • Tufted Titmouse
  • Nuthatch
  • White-Breasted Nuthatch
  • Red-Breasted Nuthatch

Large Birds

  • Black-Headed Grosbeak
  • Brown Thrasher
  • Gray Catbird
  • Northern Cardinal
  • Northern Mockingbird
  • Blue Jays
  • Red-Winged Blackbird

birds that eat suet

This list is not all inclusive.  So, check the bird list for your area.  I live in West Virginia in Zone 6B.  Birds that are native to West Virginia may not be native to your state.  Last winter, I had a Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Red-winged Blackbird, Catbird and Mockingbird at the feeders daily.  I can tell you that the Woodpeckers and Mockingbirds devoured the suet.

You can purchase suet cakes or make your own.  I do both; however, I prefer making my own suet.  You can purchase suet cakes in a variety of flavors including peanut, apple snack, cherry crunch, zesty orange, beef suet and more.

Also, I make Bacon Birdseed Cookies.  So, be sure to check out the recipe. You can use bacon grease, rendered beef from your local grocery store, melted beef fat from roast etc.  It’s a fun project to make with these kids this winter.  You can hang these cookies in a tree or place in a dish.  Let the kids observe the birds enjoying their treat.

Start saving your fat/grease from your meals and start feeding our feathered friends.  They will thank you for it.

The moment your child comes into the world, your world as a parent will revolve around sleep. Chances are that co-sleeping has crossed your mind as a possible method of how to help your baby get a good night’s sleep.   Today, we’re sharing parenting tips on five things you need to know about co-sleeping with your toddler:

  1. Attitudes to Co-sleeping Differ Across the World

The perception of co-sleeping with your toddler differs drastically from culture to culture. In many Western countries, co-sleeping is often regarded as a sleeping method practiced by slightly “alternative” parents. However, the desire to sleep privately or only with one’s adult partner isn’t all that common in the rest of the world.

In Asia and Africa, co-sleeping is encouraged. In places like Botswana, co-sleeping is seen as an important kinship ritual.  As a matter of fact, often the whole family – parents, babies, grandparents, even visitors – will sleep together at night.

  1. The Benefits of Co-sleeping Abound

There’s a reason why so many parents worldwide advocate the virtues of co-sleeping. First, co-sleeping establishes the baby’s circadian rhythms and helps them to distinguish day from night.  Furthermore, young children sleep better when they feel close to their parents.  Especially, to their mother.

Co-sleeping is more convenient for mom and dad through the night too.  Parents no longer have to stumble down the dark hallway to soothe their baby. If your child is already right next to you, you don’t have to go far to change diapers, feed and soothe your baby back to sleep.

  1. Co-sleeping Doesn’t Lead to Over-attachment

There’s a common misperception that co-sleeping with your toddler leads to an unhealthy level of dependence between mother and child. Babies and toddlers need secure attachments with their parents in order to thrive.  Also, sustained closeness with the mother helps release oxytocin.  Oxytocin is the hormone responsible for bonding and attachment.  So, there’s nothing bad about that!

  1. Safety is Important

Safety has to be the first priority for any parents interested in co-sleeping. First, think carefully about sharing a sleep space with a baby that is under one year old. Babies are most delicate at this stage, and often need their own space in a crib for sleeping.  If you bottle-feed, it’s usually recommended that your baby sleep close to you, but not in your bed.  Additionally, your doctor should confirm whether your size poses a risk to your baby in a co-sleeping situation.

However, you should recognize that adult beds were not designed for infants if you are considering co-sleeping.  As a result, make the necessary adjustments for baby’s comfort and safety.  This includes a flat, firm mattress which isn’t too far from the floor.  Next, make sure that your child isn’t overheated with blankets.  Last, check that your own clothing has no strings which could pose choking hazards to baby, and tie up long hair.

  1. It’s All About the Environment

You’ve made sure everything is technically safe: what now? Well, there are a few more steps you can take to make the co-sleeping environment truly sleep-inducing. For instance, you won’t regret investing in some blackout blinds.  Babies tend to be sensitive to light and darkness. If you have the budget, you might also consider investing in a dual air conditioning and heating unit.  This will keep your room at optimal temperatures through all seasons.
