10 Tips To Get Your Child Moving

exercise tips for children, activities for children

How Do You Get Your Child Moving? Does your child enjoy playing video games or watching cartoons more than playing outside? Does he or she stomp and pout when you encourage them to get fresh air?  Times have changed.  Gone are the days that you see children riding bikes, pitching balls, climbing trees or playing hide and seek.  Through no fault of their own, the world had become a place for gaming and unhealthy eating.  The United States ranks fifth in the world for childhood obesity.

10 Vegetables For Container Gardening

Backyard vegetable gardening can be done in containers.  So, if you’re short on space but big on fresh vegetables in the summer containers can be a solution.  Today, we’re going to discuss vegetable container gardening and the best vegetables that can be grown in containers.  There’s nothing better than fresh veggies during the hot summer months.  Most people think that they must use large plots of land to create a kitchen garden.  However, that is simply not true.
Vegetable container gardening has become popular over the years.  It’s a great way to grow fresh vegetables when you have limited space. I have listed 10 vegetables that I plant in my garden each year, but are also excellent choices for containers.  You containers can be regular flower pots, crates, 5 gallon buckets, or plastic tubs from the dollar store.  So, get creative and use your imagination.  Here’s 10 vegetables for container gardening:

1.  Cherry Tomatoes – First, cherry tomatoes are a great choice for hanging baskets on patios or balconies.  Don’t you love the idea of reaching up and grabbing a few tomatoes for a salad or snack. My favorite cherry tomato is the Sweet 100. It’s hard for me to make it out of my garden with devouring my harvest.

2.  Eggplant – Great for growing in pots. A 4 foot garden stake can be used to support the plant. Black Beauty is an excellent plant for containers. The blooms alone are worth finding a spot in the garden for eggplant.

3.  Bell Peppers –  Second, green, red, yellow, white or orange peppers can be grown in pots.  Five gallon bucks make excellent pots for container gardening. You will need a 4 foot stake to hold the plant.

4.  Herbs – Small clay pots are excellent for growing herbs in windows or on a patio.  Basil, oregano, sage, mint or Rosemary can be grown as shown.

5.  Chili or Jalapeno peppers  – Depending on your pot size, you will need a 2-4 foot stake to support your plant.

6.  Salad Bowl – Next, I have 2 wash tubs that I use.  For example, I grow Butter Crunch, Black Seeded Simpson and Salad Bowl lettuce so that I have a good mix of salad greens. If you use metal containers, place bubble wrap or newspaper at the bottom to keep the roots of the plants from burning. Lettuce likes cooler weather so if you use metal containers remember they hold heat. Place your container in a shady spot so the lettuce doesn’t bolt.

7.  Lettuce – If you’re lucky enough to have wine crates, they’ve excellent for growing lettuce and herbs too.

8.  Tomatoes  Five gallon buckets, rectangle, square or round pots can be used.  Depending on the variety you will need to stake or cage them. A 5 foot stake or cage should suffice, but be sure to stake or cage early. Look for varieties that can be grown easily in containers like Early Girl, Patio Princess or Tiny Tim to name a few.

9.  Cucumbers  – You will need a trellis so they an climb. Nothing fancy, find 2 sticks in your yard and wrap twine around them as shown.

10. Radishes or Carrots – Last, grow a pot of rainbow carrots with your children or grandchildren. The rainbow carrots are yellow, orange, purple and red.  Great idea to introduce kids to gardening while having fun.

Finally, make sure your containers have adequate drainage.  For example, use a quality, organic potting mix. Don’t limit yourself to the 10 suggestions above.  You can also grow peas, beets, squash, and zucchini in containers too.  Now that you know space is no longer an issue, you can enjoy fresh vegetables too.

10 Kid’s Birthday Party Ideas

Will you be planning a birthday party this year?  I have planned many birthday parties over the years, but always seem to struggle with the kids on a theme.  Finding kids birthday party ideas can be time consuming too.  Some years we keep the party small, and other years we go all out.  However, I must say the years that when we go all out it takes work.  Bit it is so worth it.

First, I’ve created a roundup of  kids birthday party ideas to inspire you. Hopefully, they will get your creative juices flowing, and you will be planning your child or grandchild’s party this year in no time:

1.  Peppa Pig  – So, my granddaughter loves Peppa Pig.  And I loved this cupcake idea.  As a matter of fact, I checked out the directions and they are easy to make.  So cute, and they kids will love them.

2.  Tea Party– I love having tea parties with my granddaughter.  My granddaughter is a princess.  And princesses love to dress up and drink tea.  This party suggest having each guest and their parent decorate a hat.  This is a great idea for a birthday party or a day with your daughter/granddaughter and a few friends.

3.  Western – Next, check out this photo booth prop.  Actually, The Wanted Sign is made from cardboard.  A stencil could be used to make the letters. Add a few bales of hay,  and a few other decorating ideas.  You’ll make memories forever, and your Lil Buckaroo will love it.

4.  Art –  Let’s not leave out our little artists.  This beautifully decorated cake will thrill the little artist and their guests.  After all, they will love this cake dripping with paint.  Very pretty and creative.

The Cat In The Hat –  Oh, how I love the 1 Fish, 2 Fish idea.  Especially, in the shape of cookies. Great idea for party favors.

8.  Doc McStuffin  – Doc McStuffin was found under my Christmas tree this year. My granddaughter loves to doctor her little patients too. These edible Q-tips are adorable.  Furthermore, they are a great idea for the doctor’s office too.  Most importantly, they are simple to make.  Simply dip a small pretzel sticks dipped into  melted white chocolate.  Simple enough, right.

9.  Ballet    I love this party decoration for a ballet party.  The little ballerina in your life will love her too.  What a great way to welcome guests.  Most importantly, it’s a kit that can be ordered from an Etsy shop, check it out.  You can do it.

10. Ladybug –  My baker did a great job making my granddaughter’s first birthday cake.  The small cake was used for her smash cake, and the other to serve the guests on Christening Day.  Under the fondant is a butter cream icing and yellow cake.

Finally, I hope these kid’s birthday party ideas will inspire you.  Use your imagination and be creative, the possibilities are endless.  You may also like Children’s Carnival Birthday Party Ideas.

Kim chose 6 Sanity Saving Tips for Busy Moms from The Sunny Patch. “I am ALWAYS trying to find the “best” way to enable me to do it all – and usually failing miserably. Like Tonia says, sometimes there are things that you just need to let slide off the burner completely in order to take care of the items that are the most important. I absolutely love the analogy “eat the frog” because that’s one of my pitfalls – putting off those tasks that HAVE to be done in favor of doing something that I WANT to do (housework v. blogging). If I “eat the frog” and just get the nasty over with – then I have more time to spend on doing what I love to do. It’s a concept that I preach to my two boys on a daily basis, yet I have trouble doing it myself. This was my most favorite post this week and “Eat the Frog!” is now taped to my computer monitor as a reminder to get the yuck done and out the way so I can do the fun stuff!”

The Best and Worst Cereals for Kids

Today, I’m sharing parenting advice on the best and worst cereals.  Are your kids bouncing off the walls after breakfast?  It could be that bowl of sugar that you placed in front of them this morning for breakfast.  My grandchildren like cold cereal, and it’s a great option when I don’t have time to fix breakfast.  I want them to eat healthy, so I decided to research the sugar grams in the cereal I was feeding them.

best and worst cereals

Needless to say, I was quite surprised when I came across the best and worst cereal list.  So, I thought I would share it with you. You too may be surprised by what’s on the list, and may think twice about what you serve your children for breakfast.

best and worst cereals

List of worst cereals for kids.

Here’s the list of best cereals:

      •  Mini Wheats
      •  Life
      • Rice Krispies
      • Wheaties
      • Kix
      • Corn Flakes
      • Cheerios
      • Shredded Wheat
      • Honey Nut Cheerios
      • Grape Nuts
      • Special K

best and worst cereals

Here’s the list of some of the worst cereals:

      • Honey Smacks
      • Apple Jacks
      • Fruit Loops
      • Crunch Berries
      • Cocoa Kripsies
      • Honey Bunches of Oats
      • Lucky Charms
      • Frosted Flakes
      • Fruity Pebbles
      • Cinnamon Toast Crunch
      • Trix
      • Raisin Bran

I love Honey Nut Cheerios and Raisin Bran.  I’m happy at least one of them made the Best Cereal List, Honey Nut Cheerios.  I give my grandchildren Honey Nut Cheerios, but they also love Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.   Thankfully, my grandchildren love oatmeal too.  Especially during the cold.  I also fix them a hardy breakfast of  pancakes or waffles, eggs and fruit.  Occasionally, I do fix sausage links with eggs.  My granddaughter is a fan of bacon too.  My grandson can take it or leave.

Does yours or your child’s favorite cereal fall into the Best or Worst list? Is the list making you rethink your cereal choice? It will definitely be a reminder the next time I’m in the cereal aisle and considering buying something different.

Wordless Wednesday – Dinner Ready

No matter how old they get, they never really grow up. I feed the baby breakfast and lunch changed him, and held him all while they sleep until noon.  Now they want to know if dinner is ready?  Really!

Printable Valentine’s Day Scrapbook Layouts

Sweets for your sweets!  Valentine’s Day is around the corner, so I thought I would share these “sweet” printable scrapbook layouts, and give a little history of boxes of chocolates for this day of love.

You’ve heard of the Cadbury Chocolates, right?  Richard Cadbury, son of founder John Cadbury, is credited with making boxes for chocolates. He had been working to improve his chocolate making techniques in Britain, and needed a marketing gimmick to get his new and improved chocolates  noticed. He started designing decorated, heart shaped boxes and the rest is history.

The boxes were originally designed for 2 purposes, to house the chocolates and once they were gone the beautiful boxes could be used to store love letters and other mementos. There’s the history of chocolates folks.

Feel free to print the layouts, add your favorite photos, and enjoy.
