How to Get Your Kids Away from the TV and Active

getting kids active

The last school bell has rung and summer is here.  Kids could spend the entire summer watching TV or on a mobile device. However, watchful parents ensure kids are getting outside, exercising, and staying away from digital screens. Here’s to an active summer and the joys of movement.  Check out our tips on getting kids active:

Get a Job

Depending on their age, help kids get a full or part-time job for the summer. Does working at a local pool, taking breaks to swim and being in the sun, sound so bad?  Fortunately, younger kids can work limited hours at bagel shops, lemonade stands, etc.

 Read That Book Series

Some kids are assigned books to read for summer. I ’s usually long, something the child does not want to read and is reserved for the last week of summer. As a result, take the pressure away.  As a result, add a few exciting and fun selections. Take your child to the bookstore and have them select the first book out of a series.  If they like it, they’re likely to continue reading the series.

Volunteer Your Time

Kids have a lot of time on their hands in the summer. So much that they can hold a part-time job and still have a lot of free time. It would be altruistic and look great on college applications if they devoted time toward volunteering at a local YMCA, food shelter, local business, etc. Ask around town or do a Google search to find volunteer opportunities in your area.

Get in Shape

Exercise is healthy, and with child obesity a serious issue, it’s encouraged that kids find an athletic hobby such as biking, skating, jogging, etc. The mild temperature and the sunshine make it easy to engage in an activity or sport. Inquire about sports their friends play or take kids to the sporting goods store and see if any equipment piques their interest. Getting kids active is a parental responsibility.

See the State

Some kids attend great schools and live in peaceful and safe neighborhoods.  But, some kids don’t even know what it’s like in other parts of their state. Schedule time to take your child on some road trips. While having a destination in mind like a museum is enriching, the experience of seeing other places and people can be enough. Use this weather app to choose the best days to take road trips.

Help at the House

Kids grow to be adults and later moms and dads. So as adults , take care of things around the house such as laundry, cutting the grass, making minor repairs, taking care of the pets and so on. The summer is a good time to increase a number of things a child does around the home so they can lend a hand. Perhaps a minor money incentive or reward could inspire them to do even more!

We hope you enjoyed the tips on getting kids active. Get creative, and demonstrate that being active is not boring and most importantly it’s healthy.

5 Tips To Make Living With Your College Graduate Easier

Today, college graduates are facing several factors that make coming back to the nest an ideal option.  Some factors include,  student loan debt, job unavailability and sky-high rents.  And for the first time in modern history, living with parents is the most common living arrangement for 18-34-year-olds.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on how to live with a college graduate.

college graduates

However, before you freak out when your college graduate decides they want to move back home, read these tips on how to make it work:

1. Treat your child like an adult

That means, not doing their laundry for them or giving them money for a movie. Don’t fall back into the same parental role you played when they were little. A college graduate should not expect the babying treatment.

Also, let them grow their independence. If you let them, they will be more prepared for life.  And word to the wise; stay out of their personal relationships.

2. Insist that your child get a job

After four or more years of basically job-preparation, your college graduate may be expecting their dream job to land in front of them like it’s complementary of a degree.

But you know the real world doesn’t work like that.  So should your child. It isn’t healthy for your child to be dependent on you financially while they search for their “dream job.” They’ll be more prepared and confident for life if they can pay for their own expenses.

If your college graduate is binge-watching Netflix and swiping on Tinder all day, that’s a red flag that the living arrangement is not working.

3. Consider charging rent

Next, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. So, this is something your college graduate needs to know. Most importantly, this strategy works best if you have a plan for why you’re charging rent.

One idea is to collect the money and build a nest egg for your child.  They can access the money when they’re ready to move out. Or, you can use the rent money toward your graduate’s student loans.

4. Have your child plan to pay off student debt

So, one of the biggest reasons college graduates fly back to the nest is money.  They can save money by living with you. Expect them to live within their means.  Encourage them to save their money and pay off their student debt.

5. Set a reasonable goal for when it’s time for your child to move out

Most importantly, don’t allow your college graduate to get stuck in the comforts of home. That’s why they need to set goals.  Therefore, helping them set goals will help them spread their wings and fly.

Talk with your child about what will work for both of you. For example, when will the time to leave be? Will it be when loans are paid off, or in one year after they’ve saved x amount of money?  Make sure your college graduation understands the plan.

Also, ask yourself how much support you can afford. Therefore, you can’t take care of your child if you aren’t taking care of yourself first.

Finally, it does not have to be a problem when your child wants to live at home after graduation.  As a matter of fact, help them get better prepared for their future. Just follow these tips to make living with your college graduate easier.

Port Authority Rolling Cooler Review

rolling cooler

I received an offer to review a product from Apparel N Bags, and readily accepted.  I love their products.  I’m going to the beach in a few weeks, and decided to check out the Port Authority Rolling Cooler.  I love being able to take cool beverages and snacks to the beach.  It seems like service takes forever when you’re waiting for a waiter or waitress to bring an order.  It’s even worst if when you have hungry, thirsty children who are demanding to have their cravings satisfied.

The box finally arrived.  As usual, Apparel N Bags didn’t disappoint. The cooler was about the size that I expected. I selected black and grey; however, it comes in black and red and black and blue. It’s a quality product as the majority of their products are.  The zippers are sturdy, in my opinion will hold up for some time.  There’s a pocket on the front, which could be used to hold keys, money, a tablet, or that book you’ve been wanting to read for months.

Port Authority Rolling Cooler

You can see the width of the cooler below.  There’s plenty of room for ice, drinks and snacks that need to be on ice. There’s a shelf that fits inside the cooler if you need to keep things cool, but you don’t want the items directly on ice.

Additionally, the rolling cooler has side straps just in case you need to get a good grip when lifting it to and from your vehicle. The handle was easy to raise and lower.  There is also a zippered compartment on top of the cooler.  It’s not as large as the compartment on the front of the cooler, but it provides additional space.  Perfect for small plates and utensils. The best feature, the price is only $40.00.  Awesome!

Finally, Apparel N Bags has a large selection of apparel, which includes Nike and Adidas golf shirts, Nike hats, business shirts and a host of other items.  The prices are unbelievably low. I suggest that you head over and check out this site for yourself. They have a great selection of bags in an array of colors. I highly recommend this backpack. It’s a great for a Christmas gift, but it’s also a perfect place to pick up a birthday gift or items just for you.

Note:  I received this rolling cooler as compensation for the review for this post; however, my opinions are my own.

Organic Gardening 101: Making the Most Out of Your Backyard

Today, I’m sharing gardening tips on organic gardening 101. So, you decided to do your own backyard vegetable gardening.  You want to have your own garden, grow your own produce and go organic. However, you believe organic gardening is difficult. Let me tell you, organic gardening is work, but knowing that your family is eating healthy is worth it.

Having pesticide-free food and knowing that your pets are playing in a yard that is free of toxins give you peace of mind.  Chemical solutions are there to help ease gardening, but they harm your produce and also make the soil chemical-dependent. Organic gardening will take some time, and more effort, but the results will be invaluable.

Organic Gardening 101:

Check the soil

Not all soil is the same. There are times when the soil is already filled with certain minerals or slightly acidic. These situations won’t allow for a good harvest.  The best way to prepare your soil is to take a sample of your soil and send it to your local horticultural laboratory. They will send back a report with the analysis results.  It will contain the pH value and advise which actions could be taken to improve the quality of your soil.

Which plants to choose

There are quite a lot of options to choose from, and in the end, it all depends on the purpose of your garden.

Making your own produce – choosing to feed yourself and your family can be quite a feat. Don’t be discouraged if you are unsuccessful the first time.  For a beginner, it is important to choose plants that are not demanding.  For example, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce are easy to grow. Start small and expand as you get more experienced.

How to plant

It is wise to choose the location of your crops based on the sunlight in your garden. Mark the areas where each plant should go, and be sure to not overcrowd your garden.  Also, be sure to leave enough space for air to circulate freely.  As a result, this lessens the odds of fungi growing. Furthermore, the plants won’t over shade each other, risking crop failure.

Organic pesticides

Chemical pesticides are proven to be harmful to people. They are highly effective at protecting the crops, but at what cost? The chemicals the plant absorbs can affect their texture and taste.  Most importantly, pesticides cannot be washed off. Choosing organic, home-made alternatives can more just as effective. One organic and consumable pesticide is Lemongrass.  Lemongrass not only repels certain plant-eating insects, but it also works against mosquitoes.  Furthermore, it doubles as a seasoning and tea herb for human consumption.  Also, ladybugs or praying mantises naturally hunt the pests you have overrunning the garden.

Fertilizing and watering

Even if you choose low-maintenance plants, you will need to regularly water and “feed” them. You can never be too careful when watering.  Water at the base of the plant to avoid damage. When it comes to fertilizer, the best compost is the one you make yourself. Designate a place in your garden for a compost bin.  Mix organic waste, soil, water and open air to create the perfect balance of carbon and nitrogen enriched compost.

Weeds

Weeds are a pest as much as insects. Its seeds make it almost impossible to root out, especially if you decide to go herbicide-free. And, if not controlled as quickly as possible, they tend to spread out and take over the entire garden. There are several ways in which you can suppress the growth and spread of weeds.  All include using your own two hands, some strength and some mulch. Placing mulch around plants will help reduce weeds. And when it comes to mulch, you have a few choices:

Wood chips – unless you have personal access to the source, these can get pricey
     Burlap
Straw – a short – term, but cheap solution
Lawn clippings – high in nitrogen, so they should be used only near plants that need them

Finally, the food tastes better when it’s brought to the table by your own two hands. Organic gardening provides a good alternative to farmer’s markets.  However, it requires patience and dedication. Make this project easier, by sharing experiences with other gardeners.  Connect with other gardeners on-line, join online forums, and include your friends and family.

Introduce Children To These Ethnic Cuisines

Food is love, and love is food. Families make food to feed one another and bond over the daily ritual of eating together. Everyone has a favorite dish and it’s often a pleasure to cook family favorites, but over time, eating the same style of food can get dull. That’s when it’s time to mix things up and make some ethnic food for the family! Children especially benefit from having their palates broadened by new flavor combinations and foods while they also gain precious memories from the time mom or dad made this special dish. Following are three ethnic cuisines worth introducing to your children.

Jamaican Jerk Chicken

Jamaican jerk chicken is a BBQ-style meal that brings the taste of the tropics to the home. But be forewarned before you embark on making some: it is known for its heat, which usually comes from scotch bonnet peppers. If your children aren’t ready for hot foods, you can use milder peppers such as sport or jalapeno in place of the scotch bonnets. This is a great meal to make in the summer on the grill, or get really authentic and smoke it over wood instead of coals or gas. You can also pair it with an authentic Jamaican snack.

Sushi

Sushi refers to the vinegared rice that acts as a container for the ingredients inside this classic Japanese cuisine. It’s possible to dispense with the vinegar for kids who find it too tart. The beauty of sushi is that any ingredient can go into the roll. Make it with fruit, hot dogs, or even Spam, for kids who aren’t quite ready for the more adult taste of certain types of fish.

There is no end to the combinations of ingredients that can go into sushi. The basics of the dish are the rice and the wrapper. Anything that goes in is fair game. Use sushi as a spring board for creating savory meals while introducing your kids to a uniquely Japanese cuisine.

Beef Bourguignon

Famous chef Julia Child brought French cooking to American tables and made it accessible for all. Countless adults have enjoyed her beef bourguignon paired with a glass of wine. But it’s also a good meal for introducing kids to the concept of French cuisine. It uses beef, bacon, carrots, potatoes, and onions along with red wine. Don’t worry about the alcohol content; it gets burned off in the cooking and helps to create a wonderful sauce. If the alcohol is still a concern, use an alcohol-free version to get the same flavor.

Much of French cooking uses farm-to-table ingredients and is great for showing kids how to make a delicious dinner out of seemingly basic foods.

These three ethnic cuisines are from different cultures.  However, it helps your children experience world cuisines in your own kitchen. Make it an opportunity to learn and have fun with meals. It changes things up for everyone, expands young palates, and opens the minds of your children to the idea that there’s a big world out there with unique foods.

We hope that you enjoyed our suggestions for ethnic cuisines that you can introduce to your children.
