Tips For a Healthy Garden

Gardening can be tremendously therapeutic and good for the soul.  However, it is natural that problems will arise. You could be putting in love, time, and money, but still end up seeing your beloved plants suffer.  Today, I have gardening tips that will get your garden healthy and happy.  After all, every gardener can use tips for a healthy garden

Here are a few signs that your garden might be suffering and solutions:

The birds aren’t coming

Many of us enjoy casual birdwatching.  So, it can be troubling when the birds don’t come. One of the most common causes of birds refusing to come to your garden is that they don’t feel safe.  Do you have a cat or dog?  Or does your neighbor?  Try to place your feeder higher from the ground and out of reach of any ground-dwelling animals.  You should soon see them start to come to your backyard feeders.

The bees aren’t coming

If your garden plants are flowering, but the fruit never seems to materialize, it probably means the bees aren’t coming. We need bees to move from flower to flower.  When they do, they are taking the pollen with them.  As a result, the plants can repopulate.  If doesn’t happen then the plant doesn’t fruit. The best way to counteract this problem is by adding more flowers. The more flowers you have, the most bees will be attracted to your garden, it’s as simple as that!

The trees don’t look right

Trees, just like humans, are susceptible to diseases.  Some are easily treated with fungicides, but others will need more professional intervention by people such as http://www.treeservicefortworth.org/tree-disease. They will be able to diagnose the problem and suggest treatment. Tell-tale signs include spots on the leaves, swellings and knots in the bark, changes in the rate of growth, and unseasonal color changes. If you have any concerns, it’s always best to speak to a professional for advice.

 


 

The moss is taking over

Moss can be a great addition to a garden for covering unattractive sections, and making it feel more natural and wild. But if moss seems to be taking over in areas where you don’t want it, it could be due to the soil.  Your soil could be too acidic. This is an easy one to solve. All you need to do is include some wood ash into the soil.  It will balance its pH, making it less hospitable for moss

In actual fact, the pH of the soil can have serious effects on all the plants.  So, it’s a good idea before you start doing any serious yard work to use one of the home testing kits to check the pH of your soil. This will allow you to neutralize it effectively, without harming your plants. When soil is too acidic or too alkaline, your plants will struggle to grow and could even die.

Gardens are open to the elements, so it’s easy to see why problems arise. As long as you keep your eye out for changes and react to them effectively, you should have a healthy and beautiful garden.  We hope you enjoyed our tips for a healthy garden.

Spending Quality Time With Your Kids

When you’re a parent, the days can seem repetitive. It’s like Groundhog Day, with deja vu cropping up at every turn. It’s not good – it can feel like you’re losing your mind!  However, you just need to embrace some new things and take another direction in order to mix things up a little.  Spending quality time with your kids is imperative.  Before you know it, they will be grown up and off to college.  Here are a few tips in getting you to spend quality time with your kids:

Start to Craft

Children love to craft at any age. It’s something about the combination of mess and creativity that blossoms into something beautiful  that intrigues them.  The pride that you see on your child’s face when they’ve finished a craft is something can’t be bottled up and brought.  Furthermore, there are so many crafts that are available on Pinterest.  Kids are happy with a piece of paper and some paint.  If you’re unable to run to the craft store, you can purchase craft items online at sites like www.hyglossproducts.com.  Making things like cards, posters and portraits for people that they love is personal, and you can’t buy in any shop.

Begin to Sing

Think you know all of the children’s nursery rhymes and children’s songs?  You’re wrong! Nobody knows them all, and it’s always fun to learn new ones.  Singing and spending quality time with your kids can put a bright spot in your day.  It helps break up the monotony of singing the same thing over and over.  And in more scientific terms it also benefits your child’s memory. Familiar rhymes and songs will help your children to connect.  It also helps them socialize at different events where they are being sung.  When they’re confident that they know the nursery or song, it helps them to be a part of the activity.  Check out www.YouTube.com and other video sites for children’s songs.  Have a sing along with your child.

Learn a Dance

With songs come dances! There are probably dances to some of the songs that you don’t know about.  If you can’t find any, make them up yourself. Not only do children love to express themselves with their voice, but they thrive off of being able to move their bodies to the beat.

Write a Book

Finally, sit down together and write down your memories.  Or create a story for yourself with all of the things that you love together.  It could be a magical tale of fairies and woodland creatures, or maybe you’d just like to detail down your daily walk together.  Additionally, a trip to a friends or family member will make a good story too. There are sites online that will help you to design a book.  Also, they’re very good at just jotting down thoughts and ideas to use at a later stage in the development of your project.  Spending quality time with your kids will create wonderful memories to look back on when they’re older!

What Parents Should Know About Snapchat

Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on understanding the app Snapchat.  First, it’s hard for children to imagine what life was like for their parents or grandparents.  While the majority of today’s kids are have smartphones, most of us were chained to the kitchen wall with a rotary dial telephone.  Furthermore, if we add social media to the equation we now have a worldwide audience available online.  Platforms like Facebook and Twitter have the biggest following.  But, Snapchat and Instagram also have huge online audiences.  Most of their users are young people.

Teensafe is a tech app for parents to monitor their child’s online and smartphone activity.  Additionally, Snapchat has over 82 million users with 255 million “snaps” shared daily.  The majority of users are under the age of 25 and 41% of today’s teens use this popular photo sharing app frequently.  So, take a look at this video for more information.

 

The Internet Is Forever

Also, the majority of parents are teaching their children the important lesson that “the internet is forever.”  It is a fact, that things you post and share online are for an eternity.  However, sites like Snapchat often lure users into a false sense of security. Users think their posts disappear.  Unfortunately, they can saved easily and potentially shared.

As a matter of fact, 18% of Snapchat users admit to saving a humiliating or inappropriate snap or photo.  The intention was to embarrass the sender.  They planned to share it with their own friends or family.  Unfortunately, many young users are tempted to share risky, or damaging messages.  Simply because they believe they will disappear.

 

Monitoring Messages

Parents should be monitoring their children’s online activity for a variety of reasons.  This include cyberbullying, but there are other concerns when it comes to Snapchat.  For example:

  • Since the messages supposedly disappear, there’s no proof they ever existed
  • If the kids think inappropriate material will disappear, they are more likely to send inappropriate messages. This includes sexually graphic images, aka “sexting”
  • Other users can potentially share snaps with millions of other users.  So, just because they are sending messages to people they know, it can still be shared.

According to the legal terms of Snapchat, users are responsible for their online behaviors and the consequences.  In fact, the site owns the royalty rights to everything posted.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Know the Lingo

There’s some lesser known lingo that kids are using that will not make parents LOL  But, rather have them saying OMG.  Here are some alarming acronyms that parents should know:

 

  • 8 – Usually referring to the word “ate,” but it can also be a reference to oral sex
  • 53Z – Sex
  • CD9 – Code 9 (parents are present)
  • IWSN – I Want Sex Now
  • KPC – Keep Parents Clueless
  • LMIRL – Let’s Meet In Real Life
  • PAL – Parents Are Listening (or peace and love)
  • PAW – Parents Are Watching
  • PIR – Parent In Room
  • RU18 – Are You Eighteen (or older)
  • RUH – Are You Horny?
  • TDTM – Talk Dirty To Me
  • WUF – Where (are) You From?
  • WYRN – What’s Your Real Name?

 

Although Snapchat declines usage for those under the age of thirteen.  Many youngsters sign up regardless of this restriction.  So, please monitor your child’s online behavior. Discourage them from sharing inappropriate information.  It is imperative that they know that it will likely exist forever in cyberspace.  We hope that you have found our parenting tips for Snapchat helpful.

The Importance of Clean Air in the Home for Children

We think about the importance of keeping the air clear in the outside world  We know that air pollution can harm our lungs and shorten our lives.  But, we don’t always think about the dangers of the pollution.  It can be harmful to the developing respiratory systems of children.  W must think about the importance of keeping the indoor air we breathe clean as well.  Here are a few reasons on the importance of clean air in the home for children:

Breeding Disease

If someone in a family has a cold, there is a good chance other family members will catch the cold as well.  This likelihood will greatly increase if the family home has a dirty ventilation system.  Recirculating old, diseased-filled air can affect the quality of air in a home. The damp and dark environs that prevail in a vent are the perfect breeding ground bacteria.  This bacteria is then blown by the air conditioning or heating throughout the home.  These diseases can last long past the time the original sufferer has recovered.  They can even re-infect family members months later.

Chronic Illnesses

Communicable diseases can infest a building.  The air must be kept clean.   Additionally, indoor pollution can also exacerbate the conditions of children with chronic illnesses. This includes children who suffer from asthma, allergies, and other conditions where their lungs are affected.  Allergies can make people uncomfortable.  Furthermore, allergens that are allowed to thrive in the ducts of a house can become life threatening.  A good cleaning is required to remove them.  These same airborne particles will harm the underdeveloped lungs of a child with asthma.

Active Living

Keeping kids physically active is more difficult than ever in the days of smart devices, video game consoles, and Youtube videos. But, one factor keeping kids from exercising beyond the availability of these distractions is the quality of air.  Kids who live in a polluted household will likely feel more tired.  This has a cascading effect because the physical activities. A lack of physical activities leads to poor physical health.

Longevity

So what is the cumulative effect of all of these benefits on your children? As various studies prove, keeping the air clean is associated with a longer and healthier life.  In the long term, your efforts to keep the air clear for your kids will result in reduced chances of lung cancer and respiratory illnesses.  Furthermore, it will improve your child’s general health and a feeling of wellness.  If someone told you that feeding your child a particular meal would help them live a longer life, you would certainly jump prepare the meal for your child.  Keeping clean air in your house is exactly that kind of opportunity.

Last, having clean air in the home is not a huge expense.  Mostly importantly, it just requires you to make the effort to clean it up. Quality and quantity of life for your children is an awesome reward.

Caring For Kids In The Twenty First Century

Children really are a blessing. They are joyous and completely change your life with their energy, enthusiasm and wide-eyed wonder. They also produce some of the most terrifying moments of your life. Caring for kids can be overwhelming at times. It only takes them wandering away from you in a supermarket just once for you to never want to let go of their hand again.  One second they are there, and you turn away for just a moment, and they manage to completely disappear. When you eventually find them you want to hug them and shout at them at the same time. It is not really their fault. They, thankfully, do not realize what the potential dangers might be.

Another sometimes stressful thing about children is when they are unwell. All you want for a child when it is born, and for the rest of their life, is for them to be healthy and happy. The reality of life is that no one is always, at every moment, healthy and happy. Children are no different. There is reason to be optimistic though. We are living in the best possible time in history for healthcare. Scientists learn more and more everyday about how to help this ailment or solve that one and their understanding will only increase. Technology has played a great part in this too. Kids, as they grow and change, will have all sorts of things that go a bit askew. Fortunately, there are also ways to help them. Here are few to be aware of:

Running a Fever

Perhaps the most common, and for many parents, the most alarming problem is a child with a high temperature.  It causes such concern because everybody knows that it is a sign that something is wrong somewhere.  A high temperature is never good, but there are ways to bring it down without a trip to the doctor or hospital.  You can purchase over the counter medicine, a cool damp washcloth on the forehead, popsicles, ice cream or a few ideas. If the temperature remains at 104 degrees or higher consult your pediatrician immediately. The fact remains, it is difficult seeing them in pain, especially since they themselves do not understand it.

Developmental Progress

Aside from infrequent illnesses like fevers, another pressing concern while caring for kids is a child’s developmental progress.  Autism is in the news a lot because of claims that certain vaccines may have caused it in some children.  However, an issue that gets less attention is speech development. It can have a massive impact on a child’s entire life. Technology now allows children to get treatment with experts around the country through online calls. There are lots of helpful telepractice resources that you can read.  Treat speech development problems early.

SIDS

On a particularly positive note, science has helped reduce SIDS deaths (or crib death as it is sometimes known) by half by encouraging parents to put their children to sleep on their backs. It is not understood why, but children who sleep on their back rather than their stomach are at a reduced risk.

Why Do We Have Obese Children?

I love seeing young families. I decided to take my grandson to a near-by park so that we could spend quality time together.  The park is small and located in a middle class neighborhood. We were there for approximately an hour, and during that time period I witnessed one other family out with their child.  Lets count, 2 children in the park.

It was a beautiful day, so I wondered where the children were. There was a nice trail for the kids to ride bikes or take a walk as a family.  So, why weren’t families in the park on such a beautiful day?  Again, it was in a nice neighborhood so safety shouldn’t have been a concern.  It bothered me so much, that when we went back to the house and I scoured the neighborhood.  Unfortunately, there was not a child in sight.  Why aren’t our children riding bikes through the neighborhood or playing hopscotch?  I remember playing hopscotch for hours on Saturdays after breakfast and using my roller skates. If we weren’t playing either of those games, we walked around the neighborhood going nowhere in particular.

I spent Saturdays at the roller skating rink with my daughter and for 12 years chauffeured her back and forth to dance classes.  I spent another 3 years watching her cheer our high school basket and football team on and running track on the off season. We moved on to college where she danced and her now husband played football. Not every child will be athletic, but we can teach them to move and monitor what they eat, can’t we.

Two people came to mind while I was thinking about the non-existent children in the neighborhood and park.  First Maury Povich. Why Maury? Because Maury has brought light to the problems that obese children will endure and how we as parents contribute to that problem.  I’ve watched Maury when he has featured children who are severely overweight. I’m not talking about 5 or 10 pounds, but 30, 40 and 50 pounds overweight and they were only 3, 4 or 5 years old.  Can you image what they will encounter in school. These children were eating whole pizzas, 3 – 4 pieces of chicken, a dozen doughnuts or cupcakes, and drinking liters of soda. It was one of the saddest shows that I ever witnessed. They were literally feeding their child to death.

Second, I thought about Michelle Obama and the work she did on childhood obesity with the Lets Move campaign.  Children are obese because they are inside playing computer games or pasted to the sofa watching TV.  While they are watching TV and playing computer games, they are over eating.  We’ve allowed our children to become “couch potatoes”.  We’re not spending time together experiencing the great outdoors.  The sound of children running and playing is missed in the neighborhood.  I miss seeing moms sitting in the park mingling with other moms and watching their children play.

Furthermore, I know times have changed and we can’t let our children run around most neighborhoods unsupervised, but we can encourage our children to get outside and move.  And we can monitor what they eat. If we as parents aren’t encouraging our children to move, how will they learn about exercise and being healthy.  If we aren’t setting limits, and providing healthy meals how will they know  about healthy eating?

We live in the land of good and plenty, and we are some of the most obese people in the world.  I decided to join the Lets Move movement. Not only for my grandchildren, but for myself as well. I want to join my daughter and son-in-law in setting an example for my grandchildren. Exercise has not been at the top of my list, but I’m striving to change that each day.  I make it a point to take walks with my grandchildren when they visit, and when I visit them. We will go to the park, ride bicycles, and shot hoops in the driveway.  I don’t want my grandchildren to become one of America’s statistics.

The struggle with diabetes, high blood pressure and other diseases associated with being overweight is real. I want to a part of the solution, not the problem.  Finally, how do you feel about obesity in our country? How to Get Your Kids to Be More Physically Active

Getting kids to move from the bed to the couch and away from the video games or the TV is getting more and more difficult.  Furthermore, our children are becoming more obese because they no longer get physical exercise.  Their diet is filled with junk foods like fries, sodas, milkshakes and sweet snacks.  None of it  does much to help their health.  Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on how to get your kids moving.

Diabetes, anxiety, childhood obesity and heart problems are a few grave risks that children with unhealthy lifestyles face.  Physical activity is important for everyone; however, for kids it is crucial.  Physical activity helps kids develop strong bones, maintain a healthy weight and increase their confidence level and social skills.  An active body is also less susceptible to developing type 2 diabetes and more likely to have better sleep and mental health.

Kids should get as much physical activity as possible,  but an hour a day is the minimum amount of time that they should be active.  Kids are often annoyed when their favorite video game is taken away.  Regardless, parents must make sure that they go outdoors and move their bodies.  To get your kids moving try our kids exercise tips:

  1. Find a fun activity –  Instead of just sending your kids to the park or outside to play, help them find an activity that excites them.  It may be a martial arts or a dance class.  Additionally, it could be something as simple as getting them a basketball hoop.  The can play basketball in the drive way with neighborhood kids or siblings. The more they enjoy the activity, the easier it will be for you to get to do it.
  2. Be an active role model –  If you are an active role model, the kids will look forward to physical activity. You can either join in on the fun with them or you can do your own exercise near by.  Seeing you can directly influence them. Most kids enjoy imitating their parents, so this should work for the both of you.
  3. Teach or learn a new skill together   Find the time to  teach your kids cycling, skateboarding, skipping and other fun physical activities. If there is something you would like to learn that make it even better. You can learn together.  There are many sports that both parents and kids can learn together like tennis, baseball or golf.
  4. More active toys   Children will be more inclined to turning off the TV if they have exciting toys to play with. Instead of investing in all the newest iPads, consoles and video games, keep active toys in the house.  When you want them to head outside and play, give a ball, jump ropes, or Frisbee.

It’s estimated by a study that currently only 1 out of 3 kids are physically active in the U.S.  While kids spend more than 7 hours playing and watching videos on their phones, computers, and other devices.  Today, more than ever, our kids require a healthy, active lifestyle.  Keeping them healthy now will help lead them towards a healthier adulthood.
