Baby Proofing Your Home Is Essential

Today, I’m sharing parenting tips on baby proofing your home.  According to the experts, children between the ages of 1 and 4 are more likely to be killed by falls, poisoning, choking, drowning, burns, or fire than by a stranger’s violence.  Every room in the house can be a potentially hazardous place.  So, it’s paramount that you prevent child injuries and keep your baby safe.  Secure your home from top to bottom, by implementing some security measures.

Baby Proofing Your Home

Nursery

The nursery may seem like a harm-free space, but it’s far from harmless. Keep pillows and blankets away from babies that are under 6 months old, because they can suffocate on them.  Additionally, save stuffed animals and pointy toys for later years.  Additionally, make sure you are equipped with finger-pinch guards for hinges on doors.  A safe toy box is a must, and a thick rug will help cushion falls.

Living Room

Falls and collisions with furniture are the biggest threat for a child in the living room.  Babies are careless, they don’t pay much attention to their surroundings, and they can easily bump their head and hurt themselves.  Climbing on furniture is a children’s favorite sport, so make sure you move everything away that could cause them harm.  Block access to windows and place items high so they can’t reach up and topple them over.

Baby Proof Your Kitchen

Any poisonous substances should be out of children’s reach. Make sure you lock them. Always turn pot handles towards the back of the stove, so that a child can’t get their hands on hot pots and pans.  Sharp kitchenware including knives and forks should also be stored high.  Secure all electrical outlets with covers, so that the child can’t put their fingers inside.

Baby Proof All Around the House

If you have stairs in the house, make sure to secure them with safety gates.  This includes both at the bottom and on top. Doorknob covers are another recommendation, because they’ll keep the kids away from hazard areas. Additionally, this is especially true for a garden, basement and front door.  A child is not safe in these places without a parent’s supervision.  Just as important, keep a fire extinguisher in your home.  Make sure you purchase an extinguisher for electrical or grease fires.  There are all purpose fire extinguishers on the market. Make sure you turn to professionals if you need any kind of fire safety services. Additionally, install smoke detectors on every floor of the house. Keep all toxic substances like paint and sprays safely stored.

Baby Proofing Your Bathroom

Install toilet locks to prevent toddlers from lifting the lid.  Make sure you keep razors nail clippers, tweezers, scissors, and any other sharp objects in locked cabinets. Medications are also a potential threat for the child.  Therefore, keep pills, ointments, herbs, or powders in a cabinet that only you can unlock and reach. Unplug the curling iron and never leave it on the counter. A child could be able to reach the cord and burn her or himself with the device.

Baby proofing your house should be your number one priority. Secure as many areas as you can and make sure you consult these tips for guidance. Your child’s safety should always come first.  You may also like Baby Proofing Essentials.

Fall Kindergarten Activities Pack

Fall is here.  Today, I’m sharing fall kindergarten activities.  It’s a great time to gather around the fireplace and spend family time together.  Also, it’s a great time to start gathering chilly day activities for kids.  My granddaughter started kindergarten this year.  As a result, I’m putting together lots of kindergarten activities for her.   Be sure to subscribe if you’re interested in printables.

kindergarten activities with a fall theme

Here’s a little about my fall kindergarten activities:

Helping your child count to 20 before kindergarten is great, so if you have a preschooler these activities will help them too.

fall-kindergarten-how-many-apples-do-you-see-1

The fall pack includes a coloring page, put a face on the pumpkin face, math, counting, and a bonus word search activity.   Additionally, children love to color.  Especially, this time of year when the leaves are turning and pumpkin patches await visitors.  Another activity that excites littles ones is Halloween. Actually it is around the corner, and everyone is exciting about the scariest night of the year.

Our Kindergarten Activities will helps kids count from 1 – 10 and than 1 – 15 on another activity sheetWe have also created an addition math sheet that encourages children to trace the sum of the numbers.   Further, you can find pumpkins in the Cutest Pumpkin in the Pumpkin Patch that need to be numbered.  Also, apples from the trees in the fall.  You little one will have to number the falling apples in another activity.

Additionally activities including drawing a face on the pumpkin.  This activity allows children to use their imagination to draw the pumpkin they envision.  It can be scary or funny or male or female.  The choice is up to them.  As a bonus, we included a word search puzzle that will help with spelling and reading.

Bright Picnic Set for 2 Review

Bright Outdoors Picnic Set Review

bright outdoor picnic set review

First, let me say that I love, love, love this Bright Outdoors Picnic Set.  Two side zippers enclose the canvass case. It’s a nice olive green color. When I opened the case, I was quite impressed.  I immediately thought, picnic at one of my favorite out of the way spots.  I’ve been wanting to put together a picnic basket, grab a good book, a bottle of wine and just have an old fashioned picnic.

Bright Outdoor Picnic Set Review

This picnic set includes two plates, which are sturdy.  I wouldn’t be afraid of them breaking if I had a full plate.  Additionally, there’s a nice cheese board.  So, pick up some brie or another favorite cheese and you can slice it right on the board.  Utensils are included in the set.  So there’s no need to search for a knife.

Next, the napkins. They are included too.  They are simple and made of a plaid material.  Perfect for wiping the mouth or hands.  The cheese board is noteworthy.  Did I mention, that the board could be used to cut French Bread or veggies too.

Picnic set review

Next, the set includes 2 knives, spoons, forks and a knife that is perfect for slicing cheese, meats or veggies. The utensil handles are made of a nice wood.  Moreover, if you clean the plates and utensils and place them back into the case, they should last for quite some time. Did I mention that the case will fit perfectly into a picnic basket or bag.

In addition to being used on a picnic, the set can be used for road trips.  The plates are perfect for holding the kid’s snacks.  Furthermore, mom or dad can use them for a quick bite between afterschool drop offs at the kids activities.  There’s a wine bottle opener, which also serves as a bottle opener.

I recommend this Bright Outdoors Picnic Set .  I actually couldn’t find any cons to write about.  Check it out for yourself.  Most importantly, it would make a great gift for you or a family member or friend.  Last, you may also like the Ultimate Kitchens Water Infuser.

Pre and Post Vacation Cleaning Tips

tips for a clean house after vacation

Taking a vacation once a year is very relaxing. It helps you unwind and take a break from your busy schedule. By the time you resume your official duties, you feel fresh and energized. However, if not planned well, the last days of your vacation can be stressful as you try to run errands and do cleaning chores. Here are useful tips to help you manage the situation with minimal effort.

  1. Plan for your return even before you go on your vacation

Take care of some of the monthly routines before you leave. Pay any outstanding bills. If there are any utility bills that may fall due when you are away or soon after the vacations, contact your service provider and pay in advance. This will eliminate any anxiety due to late payments when you come home. It will also free time to do other things once you are back.

  1. Clean your house before you leave for your vacation

You do not want to be welcomed by a foul smell of dirty dishes or stinky trash.  Wash all dishes and put them away.  Empty the trash cans and keep them clean.  Throw out any food in the refrigerator that will expire while you’re on vacation.

  1. Tend to your lawn

You do not want to find overgrown grass when your return.  Mow the lawn and trim it before you leave.  You can return from vacation with a feeling that you don’t have to immediately attend to the lawn.

  1. Turn all the water taps off before leaving

Make sure all taps in the house are turned off. Especially, during winter when taps are susceptible to freezing. Also, make sure there are no running toilets or water leaks.  This will ensure that water does not spill and destroy your household items while you are away. Things can get messy and cause you unimaginable loss if your valuables get soaked in water.

Post-Vacation Cleaning Tips

You can travel peacefully knowing that you will have lesser issues to attend to when you return home. After enjoying your vacation, plan to travel home several days before you return to the office.  Always give yourself time to rest and get over jet lag.  It is unwise to return to work immediately after your vacation.  Especially if you have traveled a long distance.

Once you get home, unpack and relax. Sort the laundry and do a load when you can without pressure.  If you have pick up and delivery service for your dry cleaning, call your service provider.  If they do not pick and drop services, plan when you will take the laundry to them. Treat yourself to maid services to assist with the cleaning if you can afford it. This will allow more time to rest.

Use your extra time to catch up with your family and friends. If you bought gifts, visit and share the items. Tell them your stories about your vacation and allow yourself to enjoy the memories. Sharing your memories will  lift your spirit and leave you happy and emotionally strong.  Be sure to attend to any matters that could require your time before you return to work.

I hope these pre and post vacation cleaning tips will help you the next time you decide to head out for a little rest and relaxation.  What pre and post vacation cleaning tips do you have to share?

5 Reasons For Food Storage

dried food storage tips

In the United States, most people do not think about needing to keep food on hand. We pick up grocery store items when we need them. Out of stock items annoy us.

Many people across the country have learned that there are instances when having a stash of food is necessary for survival. A supply of stored food may just mean the difference between life and death.

  • Natural Disasters – If you have ever been in a region that deals with hurricanes or blizzards, you know what it is like to see the empty shelves at the grocery store. People panic, they want to make sure they have food in the event they cannot get food for several days. Additionally, there are disasters you cannot plan on.  For example, earthquakes, tornados, and mudslides.  People panic because they have not properly prepared. Taking the time to set aside some non-perishable food, you can stave off the challenges of these natural disasters.
  • Evacuation – There are many reasons why you may be evacuated from your home. In a mass evacuation like what happens ahead of major hurricanes, you cannot count on neighboring communities to have enough food and supplies to accommodate the influx of evacuees. Keeping an emergency kit with 72 hours’ worth of food and water is critical during these times.
  • Unable To Leave Home – There are times when you may not be able to leave home. You may be sick or snowed in, so you will need to ensure you have enough food on hand to sustain you until you can get out again.
  • Drop Or Loss Of Income – While everyone likes to think they are immune from a layoff or a drop in wages, the truth is everyone is at risk. If you do encounter a significant drop or loss of income, it can be scary.  It can leave you wondering how you are going to feed your family. Having a supply of food on hand is a great way to help reduce the stress during these very difficult times.
  • Interruption To Supply Chain – Natural disasters are not the only thing that can cause an interruption in the supply chain. Global events, worker strikes, transport company bankruptcies, and other challenges can all delay or prevent food from being delivered on time. If there is a disruption to the supply chain, this can cause local and regional panic.  Furthermore, this could affect the availability of grocery supplies.

Options for Preparation

There are two primary options for developing your storage  of food. Budget, time, and the number of people for whom you need to prepare food will influence which option is best for you.

Option 1: Prepackaged Food Storage – You can easily purchase prepackaged meals, similar to what would take on a camping or hiking trip. You can buy them individually or in a bulk bucket for easy storage. Prepackaged meals can last for up to 10 years, depending on the brand.  So there is little need to rotate your inventory or worry about it expiring.

Option 2: DIY Food Storage – You can also buy bulk food, and ration it out in simple recipes. The best foods for this kind of preparation include rice, dry beans, lentils, nuts and granola. You can also buy or make your own dehydrated food like jerky and dried fruit.

To store it, you will want to use a vacuum seal solution, such as foodsaver bags. This ensures your ingredients last longer. Creating smaller bags ensures you can easily grab a few days supply in the event you are evacuated.

No one wants to think about emergencies or the stress that comes along with them. However, taking some time and investing a little money into proper preparedness helps reduce that stress when these events occur.

Tips to Make Your Garden Ready for Winter

tips to winterize your garden

The warm summer is almost over and days of worrying about the drought are gone.  Fall and winter, however, are seasons during which your plants are at their most vulnerable. In order to make sure that your garden remains healthy during the cold months, you’re going to need to prepare your garden. Here are some tips on how to prepare your yard for the fall.  Be sure to check out my other backyard vegetable gardening tips too.

Cover Crops

Hairy vetch and cereal rye are excellent cover crops.  They are a type of plant species that will keep the soil microbes alive and active during cold winters. This will further boost your garden at planting time, which can bring a ton of ease for the next spring.  Cover crops are also great at adding organic material to the soil, in addition to helping your garden during the fall and winter.  Remember to gently rake the crop seeds into the soil surface, in order to avoid disturbing the standing crops.

Harvest and Preserve

Fall is the perfect time to harvest your storage crops, such as carrots, potatoes and onions and properly cure and put them away for winter. Make sure not to overlook plants such as broccoli side shoots, herbs, and sunflowers.  Herbs are particularly easy to dry and freeze, so even a small garden can create a winter-long supply.

Soil PH

Vegetables like acidic soil, so keep this in mind when checking for PH. Yes, dealing with chemistry stuff such as soil acidity does seem somewhat nerdy, but it plays a vital role in in ensuring the success of your crops the next spring.  A PH kit or electronic tester can be found easily in most plant nurseries.  If your local nursery doesn’t have it, you can always opt for online shopping. Of course, if you don’t like dealing with chemistry, you can look for a company that specializes in gardening services–although you will need to cough up some extra cash.  Nothing beats calling the experts, especially if your garden means a great deal to you.

Compost and Manure

Fall is a perfect time for adding sources of organic matter, such as compost and manure to the garden. Adding 1 to 2 inches of soil supplements will ensure that your garden is resupplied with enough nutrients for your plants to weather the cold months. The only thing you need to keep an eye on when adding compost, manure, or any other similar material are weed seeds.  Weeds multiply easily and are somewhat adaptable.  So even traces of weed seeds can ruin your entire spring. The best way to go is by checking with your supplier!

Pro Tip

It smells, makes you cry, but it’s a brilliant addition to many meals. Garlic is the perfect crop to plant in the fall. Once the temperatures have dropped significantly, yet before the ground freezes, plant garlic.  Plant individual cloves, 3 inches deep, spaced 6 to 8 inches between each other.  Add a couple of inches of mulch to the bed. Each clove will become a full head by next summer – talk about an investment!

Making sure that your garden is fall-ready comes down to preparation and experience.  Applying cover crops, compost and manure, harvesting on time and checking for soil acidity are key factors in keeping your garden healthy.  Do this and your garden will thank you once the winter passes!

Second Honeymoon Travel Tips

How do you picture your perfect honeymoon?  Do you day dream of walking hand in hand on a tropical beach?  Maybe you’ve always wanted to visit Europe? Or perhaps you both want to pack your hiking books and head to Morocco?  To help couples worldwide, we  have put together 8 essential travel tips to help you with planning a honeymoon that you and your loved one will reminisce about for years!

tips for a second honeymoon

How do you picture your perfect honeymoon?  Do you day dream of walking hand in hand on a tropical beach?  Maybe you’ve always wanted to visit Europe? Or perhaps you both want to pack your hiking books and head to Morocco?  To help couples worldwide, we at WeLoveHoneyMoons.com have put together 8 essential tips to help you plan a first or second honeymoon that you and your loved one will reminisce about for years!

Set a Budget

Every project needs a budget including planning a honeymoon.  You can use a honeymoon-budget sheet to help you keep track. Start with a general budget and then drill down by categories.  If you prefer apps, use Expensify to keep track.

There’s no reason to cut corners on your honeymoon planning. After all, there are ways to honeymoon for less. This includes staying closer to home or choosing an affordable honeymoon package.  You can also save by booking your honeymoon online or by using your miles to get a cheaper flight. On top of that, you can try alternative means of transportation.
If you are renewing your wedding vows, be creative and set-up  a “Travel Fund”.  Set a travel date and start looking for more ways to save.  You can sell things or take on a few odd jobs to help raise the extra funds.
The best part is that you don’t have to lower the expectations. There are ways you can still have an amazing time and not spend a fortune or go in debt!

Look For the Most Suitable Destination

Easter Island or the Maldives sound like amazing destinations for a honeymoon on the island. However, do you know how far these places are from where you live?  So, when you’re planning a honeymoon consider the distance you will be traveling.

Here is some information:
• it takes 17 hours to fly from New York to Easter Island
• it takes 21 hours to fly from Los Angeles to the Maldives
If you only have less than a week to spend on your honeymoon, you don’t want to be on a plane for almost two days.  A better idea is to look for destinations closer to home. If you live in the US, a honeymoon in the Caribbean can be a great choice.  Just remember, you don’t want to be on a tropical island during the hurricane season.
When picking a honeymoon location, think about the weather. While being stuck inside with your spouse can be exciting, pick a place where there are interesting seasonal things to do when you’re ready to get out and about.
If you choose an early summer month, Southern Europe is a good idea. You can decide to go on a honeymoon destination in Italy or maybe choose a honeymoon package in Greece. When budget is a concern, consider a less popular time to travel.  Europe in the summer is expensive, but not in the winter. The Caribbean is always cheapest in August -September.  Find a destination to match your budget rather than the other way around.

planning a honeymoon

Choose a Good Airline

Flying business class for your honeymoon may sound good, but it can be a very expensive affair.  Save money either by using miles to upgrade or by simply booking economy and choosing seats with extra leg room.  Don’t be afraid to choose a low-cost airline. They have new fleet and are affordable.  Consider the leg room when choosing your seats.

Book In Advance

Book your honeymoon package six to eight months prior to the event! This window gives you a good chance to find affordable airfare and availability in the resort of your choice. If you want to stay at a certain resort or do something specialized, you may want to push that booking date back to a year if possible.  Sign up for fare alerts for the flights you are interested in.

Avoid making changes to the airfare or accommodation after you book. Changing the date on your plane ticket or accommodations could lead to paying penalties.

Buy Travel Insurance
This is something that many people tend to overlook, but make sure you have travel insurance. Why? Because the right kind of insurance can protect you against a lot of things: from delayed flight to lost luggage or stolen goods.  And not to mention that it can save you a lot of grief during emergency situations or medical issues.   Lisa, blogger at Playa del Carmen agrees: “If any time should be stress-free, it is your honeymoon! It is worth the peace of mind.” Make sure the insurance you choose covers the activities you plan to enjoy (eg. scuba diving).

Travel Light

You really don’t need to pack half of your closet.  However, you don’t want to go to a fancy restaurant and not have anything for the occasion, either. Pack smart and think layers.  For a honeymoon on the beach, consider packing a lightweight dress and a pareo or cardigan for the evenings.  You may want to leave your high heels at home if you plan to visit Europe, with its old, cobblestone cities. Also, it’s worthwhile to consider packing that ultra-light waterproof jacket no matter where you’re headed.

The less stuff you carry with you, the more flexibility of movement you’ll be able to enjoy. Also, get a bag with wheels and don’t strain your body! Your energy should all go towards enjoying your trip with your loved one.  Roll your clothes to maximize the space in your carry on.

planning a honeymoon

Share Your Travel Itinerary

You should share your travel itinerary with at least a person you trust.  Things do happen and it might be useful and even life-saving if your loved ones know how to find you when necessary.

Relax and Enjoy Your Honeymoon

Make sure you plan for a balanced mix of activities and down time while you’re planning your honeymoon. That means allowing yourself to enjoy it. You’ll get back to the real world eventually – but you only get one honeymoon. Relish it.

Lots of people are curious about England. It’s a tiny country that packs a big punch when it comes to tourist attractions. The word ‘quaint’ is used a lot to describe English villages, houses, and local activities. After all, there are some pretty weird, wonderful, and whacky things that the English like to do! Rolling big cheeses down hills, Morris Dancing, and welly wanging. Those are just some of the village delights you might come across up and down the country.

When it comes to food, you may also find some little gems and weird dishes. Most towns and villages have their own local delicacy. This might include cakes, biscuits, or cheeses. Seaside towns might offer jellied eels and liquor pie. What about a beef stottie? And the Cornish pasty will definitely delight your entire family. Common favorites include the traditional English Breakfast and the Yorkshire pudding roast dinner.

American theme parks may be huge, but the British are definitely catching up. There are several to choose from all over England. Your kids will probably find their favorite TV characters at the themed parks. English favorites like Thomas the Tank Engine and Peppa Pig have their own parks!  You can buy your attraction tickets online in advance or at the entrance kiosk. Many parks have special events at certain times of the year. It’s worth doing your research to find out what they’re offering. Some include large wildlife parks. Additionally, those that are by the beach offer extra value when you’re out for the day.

However, if it’s the beach that brings you to England, you’ll not be disappointed. Some are world-renowned for the surf. Cornwall, in particular, brings professional surfers to the UK. There are plenty of surf schools and courses to choose from around the coast of England too. English kids like to bring a bucket and spade to the sand. Then they make elaborate sand castles with sea water moats. You can find sand sculptures at some of the popular tourist promenades.  If you’re feeling particularly relaxed, you can enjoy letting your kids bury you neck deep in the sand too.

England Tourist Attraction

Scotland and Wales might boast some of the most characterful castles. But England certainly has some remarkable ruins and inhabited castles for tourists to visit. Some have been turned into hotels. Others are free to visit and roam around the old ruins. Many have activities to help engage your kids in the history of the place. They can even experience what life was like hundreds of years ago. As well as castles, you can find estates, manors, abbeys, cathedrals, palaces and country houses that are all open to the public.

Other activities in London that you may want to consider is the world-renowned museums and art galleries. You can visit Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. This is also the home of Big Ben. St. Paul’s Cathedral is a remarkable building. Its design is particularly interesting for those who have a passion for acoustics. Children will love the Whispering Gallery.

British theater is also lots of fun for an afternoon out with the kids. You can find plenty of shows in the West End. If you visit England in the winter, you can experience the delights of the British Pantomime. These productions are very funny and will leave your kids squealing with delight. Well-known celebrities and TV stars often perform, so you might even recognize a few familiar faces.  Some performers engage the audience with a little audience participation. Adults love them just as much as the kids, and the humor will definitely appeal to all.

Making the trip to the UK may feel like a huge undertaking, but the pleasures of an English vacation will make up for it. There are so many great attractions. There are interesting things to see and do that will suit the entire family no matter what their ages or interests.  The lack of language barriers definitely helps if your kids like to explore on their own. If you’re looking for something a little extra special,  start planning your next year’s vacation to England.
